  • Each year the Hartley TS16 Association in Victoria runs a variety of sailing and motoring cruises. This is from a cruise on the Yarra river through the centre of Melbourne on a beautiful Spring day.
The Hartley TS16 was designed by New Zealander Richard Hartley in the early 1960's, and was the original "trailer-sailer" design.

HI, how big is the motor that you are using? what do you recommend on a TS18?

I can't remember what motor I was using for the particular cruise, but I now use a long shaft Mercury 6hp 2 stroke
I used to use a 10hp but it was too big and heavy. A 6hp is lighter and gets a TS16 up to hull speed just as well
Any less than 4hp and you would have trouble motoring into wind or tide

Hi, how fast does it go roughly? Can you go faster than 6 knots motoring it? I'm thinking of buying a small sailboat like that in the video, but don't know much about sailing and I'm just thinking of using a outboard motor as a cruiser it looks so fun. Cheers

      5-6 knots under power,
Faster, 6-7 knots, under sail. We've had her planing between 8 and 10 knots on a broad reach in an 18-20 knot wind
