The My Immortal trilogy is Internet Historian reading the most infamously bad Harry Potter fanfiction ever written. It’s...an adventure. I fully admit that I can’t sit through the whole thing. Like, if you enjoy laughing at bad movies, where it’s just all badly done, it’s that kind of humor.
I remember hearing about this. For context I went to a Catholic Highschool during this time. Didn't hear about it from school staff, despite being a Catholic school mine wasn't as religious as most might think, but from the news reporting on it. I still remember making jokes with friends about it, and more after we "survived" the end of the world. We made even more after 2012, about how we survived three apocalypses (Y2K, this, and 2012).

I don't think anyone really believed 2012 or were worried about it. Companies and governments were really worried about it happening, Y2K that is. My dad was working in Saudi Arabia at the time and his company handed out emergency supplies to employees prior to Jan 1 2000 just in case the power grid crashed and stuff.

The only reason we think it was all a lot of unfounded hysteria now is because all the IT guys in every datacenter in every company spent the second half of the 90s trawling through their networks to find all the databases and automated systems that were vulnerable to the bug before the calendar ticked over to 2000. It was one of those cases where the options were either "you didn't prevent the disaster and everyone demands to know why you were so negligent" or "you did prevent the disaster, and everyone demands to know why you got everyone in a panic over nothing."
the funniest thing about the Mayan Calendar/2012 thing was that everyone was making a big deal about a calendar that was made by a culture that could not predict it's own ending... hundreds of years before their calendar would end.

I just realized that the guy who walked out in the street in front of everyone during the day of the "rapture" is actually Fitz Patrick. I thought it was Harold Camping when I first watched it and now I feel bad for the guy even more now. Not only did he spend all of his life savings on numerous posters for this bullshit, he also was humiliated in front of hundreds of people as the word he once believed in was wrong.
To be fair, Y2K was almost a real thing and a lot of systems would have been affected if not for the work of programmers who fixed it beforehand. That "integer overflow" issue was very real, and the solution for old systems that couldn't store larger integers* was just to tell it to wrap the date when it reached that digit. But, yeah, we did avoid it. But it coulda happened for real very easily! *Like, 12 numbers instead of 24 numbers.
I think the Big J said that we wouldn't know when the end will come, so honestly I'd just say live your life to the fullest each day. Besides...I only remember May 21, 2011 as the one day where my friends and I woke up one morning with a nasty hangover because the night before we were drinking and making fun of it singing, "Miss American Pie".

It's just one of those stories that I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't watched the video.
