  • Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Harvey Mandel Licks From 1971. I've noticed a few requests to features some of the legendary Harvey Mandel's music, and while most folks on the street aren't familiar with his name (or his music for that matter), his influence on rock and blues-rock guitarists in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s cannot be understated or ignored - so let's dive in!
This lesson begins with a bonus lick featuring one of Harvey's tapped bending licks, as Harvey was pioneering tapping techniques and ideas way back in the early/mid 1970s. The lesson continues with a handful of licks from a live television appearance from 1971, when Harvey was playing with the legendary John Mayall. The licks here include a sneaky bluesy phrase, a slick bluesy rolling-legato idea, a tasty dominant pentatonic melodic bending phrase, and more. Not to mention a slick hybrid-picked legato phrase pulled from some live footage from 1995!
Needless to say, if you're a fan of Harvey Mandel's timeless music and guitar influence, a player searching for some new licks to add to their stash of ideas, or just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

My lead guitar player didn’t show up, for a Dixie hwy gig way back when, but Harvey did, & blew my mind then, & every time I ran into him thereafter. Love this!

Harvey has been dealing with health issues but hopefully he can get over the hump and continue to be a creative musician

I used to donate every couple of weeks when he was getting his nose redone. He had cancer inside his nose. It was around 2014?

I saw him play at a bar in SF in 1981 called The Saloon on Grant St. with the guitarist from Country Joe and the Fish, his name was Barry. He really impressed me with his playing, reminded me of Mike Bloomfield.

Loving that Washburn photo in the beginning. I still have the Washburn Falcon that I bought in the very early 80's.

His solos on the Rolling Stones 'Hot Stuff' from Black and Blue are some of the greatest in their canon. The Snake snaking around Keef's groove and Charlie's beat is pure magic. I'd love to know what he's doing, it's such a unique sound.

Harvey Mandel solo albums have more jazz fusion licks rather than pentatonic licks. He made a VHS lessons which you should try to get because he goes through a lot in the video. Check out Tjahjo Wisanggeni album From the Other side 1992 its neo classical to make a lesson about Tjahjo guitar licks. Kurt Cobain often used mixolydian b6 mode for his chord progressions using the bVI and bVII chords instead of using the vi chord and vii dim. The mixolydian b6 mode is more of a rock n roll tonality which you should try to find other rock bands that used this mode to make a lesson about.

@@markpell8979 Of course he didn't know, I'm just saying that his ear was leading him to write vocal melodies in mixolydian b6 instead of using the major scale or minor scale because those don't have a rock n roll tonality. the mixolydian b6 has a rock n roll tonality, most rock songs use mixolydian riffs and vocal melodies because of the bVII

@@markpell8979 Ya you can use inbetween chords as passing chords that aren't in the key or non-diatonic chords as passing chords or as Turn Around Chords. Grateful dead Garcia would often use the flatten bV chord was a turn around chord.

Harvey Mandel, It is written that when Eddie Van Halen had the chance to meet Harvey, Eddie's technique blossomed! If you know the biography I speak of you can Verify this fact. Thanks David
