- In this video we are flying the Waco YMF-5D, which is arguable the ultimate weekend plane, meaning it's for true enthusiasts. This particular Waco is also for sale and listed on controller for $385,000. The link can be found below. The Waco YM-5D is built in Battle Creek, Michigan and used to be the Cadillac of personal aircraft. Today it's a flying piece of art with optional modern avionics and even IFR certification! Back when I first started flying, you had to clear Dinosaurs off the grass runway before take off, just kidding it was the Neanderthal's that were the problem. Anywho, There were a number of Waco's and Stearman there, very nostalgic field, I remember hand propping one of those beasts, One of the Plane's log book had Charles Lindbergh name in it. Beautiful Waco! I own Waco YMF serial #003. They've made a lot of great upgrades and changes since making mine. The glass cockpits just crack me up but I'm a little old school and can't imagine flying off my instruments that much in an open cockpit biplane. Having said that, I wouldn't mind giving it a try though at least once! Lol!

Putting all that electronic junk in an old fashioned biplane is sacrilege. Who needs that stuff in a biplane??
Agree but seems to be the preferred package these days. It would be fun to have one with a whiskey compass, airspeed indicator, altimeter, and turn coordinator.

I was fortunate enough to own a Waco UPF-7 in 1956 just after discharge from the Army. I used it for a couple of years commuting from Phoenix to Nogales, Sonora. Finally, still flat broke and unable to afford new fabric and extensive annual I sold it to a Lady Duster who had the facilities to keep it in good repair and in service.....Too Bad, real great flying experience, I paid $1200 (all my Army mustering out pay) and can only Dream of how much the A/C is worth today......sorta like the original 1957 Corvette I wrecked .....or like the Old Pilot I met in San Diego who showed me his Original pilots license signed by "ORVILLE WRIGHT," He made me a copy which I lost during my many Transfers throughout the World.... All, "Fond Memories" !!!!

Rich I really enjoyed following along on your demo flight of the Waco YMF-5D. I fly in the mid-coast part of Maine and have about 15 hours in a 2013 YMF-5D. It took some getting used to all the "gizmos" installed in that airplane especially when compared to an originally-equipped Stearman PT-17. If you ever have the chance take a flight from Brunswick to Bar Harbor along the coast! Cheers.

Nice video, awesome airplane. Frankly-and we know this resides in the eye of the beholder-the paint scheme is awful!! Though it is a beautiful design. Our grandfathers designed and built some profoundly impressive stuff and it is neat the modern companies improve and carry-on. Other that the paint (and I’d probably go with round gauges as well), she’s really impressive!

Very beautiful plane, and special indeed.
I would wondered aside from the tandem 2 seats, does it have any space for luggage?
What is it's range in miles, take off and landing distance?
Front seat has room for 2, and luggage behind the back seat. I’d say 300 NM (3 hrs/100 KTS) range with reserve, and 2000 ft is adequate.
Going to Oshkosh to look at Waco Airplanes in July. May be in the market for one this year. Ex big airplane military pilot and current airline pilot. Key Thoughts about owning a classic airplane?
These newer Waco’s have been easy to maintain - this one is our second one so some good experience with them. Planning on being at Oshkosh for a day or two as well. Thanks for watching!

What’s the difference in the D vs C variant?
A lot minor changes but mainly went to 300hp from 275.

Why put in all that expensive electronics equipment in a plane you won't fly high,long or in rain?..and probably night.
The original owner who ordered it new flew it, flew it around quite a bit, at night, X/C, etc so he used the equipment. He gave rides too so people up front could see what was happening with avionics - so for him money well spent. Thanks for watching!
