Let's be real. Manufacturing consent is not an impressive work, and Chomsky has always struggled in debates. Manufacturing consent repeatedly said "the propoganda model predicts" and then listed a retrospective analysis, almost always avoiding any predictions that could potentially be falsified. The few general predictions it made were largely invalidated by the rise of social media echo chambers. "The propoganda model" was not a robust model, and the number of counter examples it excluded easily exceeded its retroactive predictions (most ironically, failing to predict the success of Manufacturing Consent itself). Chomsky's paradox has always been that he must always assume most people secretly agree with him, elections be damned. There are virtually no famous leftists before him that are still upheld, because Chomsky's generation was the first of the ivory tower social experts to recognize that he had to claim democratic support. His greatest moment was his Buckley Vietnam debate, in 1969. And he ruined that by commenting, at the exact moment of Mao's Cultural Revolution, that "China has truer democracy than the US," in order to justify his support for the only thing chomsky has ever stood for: anti-capitalism.

This is an example of suppression of free speech which he admonished in his literal first sentence and it is objectively more minor than the removable of arbitrarily chosen books from school libraries which stifles the learning and very ability to speak of an entire generation. These are the precise talking points that made him who he is but all of a sudden now he’s changed? I know Chomsky has always been put on a pedestal by lefties for his anti-war position (which was obviously admirable), but if you're at all familiar with Chomsky's actual field of expertise, linguistics and the development of human language, there's nothing old Noam has done in relation to free speech recently that's been remotely surprising. His theories around these issues, while cutting edge at the time, have now had more holes poked in them than swiss cheese. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with this, as knowledge evolves, but what has been troubling is the manner in which Chomsky has responded to legitimate detractors of his work. He's consistently acted in bad faith in any conversations or debates around deficits in his work, and in more recent years, has simply refused to defend his position because "ABC is an XYZ, so it's not even worth having a discussion." - Typical regressive mentality. Now the dude is 1000 years old, so I don't attribute his evolution to anything malicious, I see it more as just the natural transformation of a once great mind, into a scared old man.
