Great Blue Heron Catches Big Fish...after Snapping at a Turtle

- This great blue heron hangs with turtles and tries to swallow a largemouth bass. It can be dangerous to swallow prey that is too big. But the great blue heron does fairly well preying upon larger fish. Bluey is my great blue heron that hangs out with turtles on my turtle log.
This is technically the subspecies called the northeastern or northern great blue heron (Ardea herodias herodias).

Though fish make up most of a great blue heron's diet, other creatures from small mammals to amphibians are also eaten by these large birds!
In the opening shot I had to check several times to see whether it was a photo or video. They stay so still!
What a fascinating process. I did not think that Bluey would be able to do it, but what a display of thought, instinct, and biology. Much like a heron, patience is rewarded in this video. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Saw my first great blue yesterday. A migrator before winter, perhaps? They are certainly majestic birds.

The Bass was fighting, still, the determined Heron swallowed that whole prey alive?! It looked like it was desperately kicking in her stomach!
I wonder if the unlucky thing stands any chance of survival/escaping if eaten in that condition too? Maybe it has a chance to turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach??
Typically all the prey fish are swallowed alive and will slowly die in the digestive system of the heron. So...it's a bit brutal but that's how nature goes.

Still, it looks like this Bass was fighting even harder when going down/inside the bird. Does this particular fish really stand 0 chance of survival, and if so, how does the bird keep it?
I guess when looking into it’s mouth, there was no trade the bass could offer to spare it’s life?!
