The Wolfman is my favorite of the buttons. It was one of the first “classic” monster items I obtained. That image from House of Dracula is probably my favorite image of the Wolfman. It was the basis for the Remco 9” Wolfman as well- my favorite Wolfman toy

I love that side-eye Wolf Man image. Some of the best Wolf Man promo imagery came out of that film, where the Wolf Man barely appears. Larry should have wolfed out at the end and battled Franky.

Really awesome pinback buttons. Great video. Ray. I have the Famous Monsters Speak LP. Definitely a weird but neat album.

I remember first seeing one of these pinbacks in an ad in "Toy Shop Magazine," pre-eBay. Little did I know that one day I would watch an almost hour long master-class on the buttons...and love every minute of it! Thank you, Ray!

The Famous Monsters Speaks album also formed the basis for the art used on the 1980 Eureka Halloween die-cuts.

I have both series of Elwar buttons (large and small) that you do, but not the first series of large buttons like the ones Hugo does. I bought five of the large Elwar buttons, except for the Creature, from an eBay seller several years ago, but I purchased the large Elwar Creature button as a kid in the 1960s (probably the mid '60s). My kid memory tells me it was actually a rack toy and sold in a plastic bag with a header card for around 29 cents. Maybe the large Elwar buttons sold in stores in the '60s as rack toys, and in '72 started showing up in Captain Company ads. I know I bought the Creature button in the '60s for sure, but the memory of it being sold as a rack toy I'm only somewhat certain of. We know the small ones sold in vending machines so maybe Jim Warren created the Elwar brand to include some of the product not sold through the magazines (assuming the large buttons were sold first in stores as I remember). More lingering monster mysteries...

Raymond thank you for the praise. My monster collection has been slowly selling off. The Big Elwar stamped buttons will be posting on ebay soon. Please do a show on the Binders, just a suggestion. I have all 3 binders Dracula is currently being auctioned. I really like the Ray Ferry sealed binders too. But I dont like the man and his "morals" lol. Great show I would have sent the 1st editions to you for the show!!

Thank you! I don't own the original binders, sadly. I do own one Ray Ferry Phantom binder...or did I sell it...I think I sold it. So I don't own any binders.

Another great episode and I've seen these buttons for years online and in collecting books ect. but it's interesting to hear so much information on them. One thing I did notice was that the small B&W buttons have the first issue artwork but the second series typeface. Interesting that this was changed and adds to the slight mystery about them. Also the word you were looking for at the start is safety pin (although that's what we call this style of pin fastener in the UK so it might differ for you).
Thanks as ever for taking the time to put this together and I'm hoping that you might do at least part of a future episode about the 60's monster head pencil sharpeners. I have some of these and would love to hear your thoughts on them, this might even fit into your 'Horror Staples' theme!

Thank you! I don't own a set of the pencil sharpeners, unfortunately. I have a Wolf Man, and that's it. Very interesting observation about the lettering on the small buttons. I had not noticed that.

I have a set of the 7/8 inch version of the large 3 1/2 elwar buttons. Yes they have the same printed logo on the side like the 31/2 version. These are super rare.

The super-close-ups really worked, to highlight the art. Buttons are less common today, so they were a great time stamp, or a period piece, matching the era of the monster mags. Would you say the art style is in the “house style” of Basil Gogos?
Also, I’d like to mention on the Fanboy Cantina youtube channel, we just did a birthday tribute to Rich Koz - Svengoolie. At 1:06:04 we reference your tribute to Sven.

Thank you! I took a look at your video. Thank you for including me! I guess the art style of the buttons would be considered a Warren Publishing house style. I would say Gogos painted within this house style, and was the most classic example of it. I don't think Gogos painted these buttons, but it's possible. Gogos would have based his designs on movie stills, not a poster and some album artwork.

I didn't check on the ending price. But it didn't say "elwar" in the title, so that might have hurt its visibility.
