Three Fingered Jack Summit, Oregon

  • In this video we go up the summit of Three Fingered Jack. This is a tougher mountain due to the final rocks being so steep and crumbly. We roped in for a few different obstacles to have the safest chance of making a summit. Hopefully up next I will get to summit videos of Washington, Hood, and Jefferson.
Here is the 3 hour uncut footage of this video:

I climbed this following a very good leader in 1982. I was 22 and it didn't scare me enough, now it does. I certainly remember the crawl...Nightmarish exposure, thankful to make it down in one piece. I can't get over the number of climbers I see who go unroped over very dangerous terrain. You carried the rope up there, USE it.

This brought back so many memories! I've climbed Three Finger Jack several times. The rotten chimney chute up to the summit ridge is always fun. The traverse over the wedge to the tiny summit is airy! I have some photos but that was before I was filming. Thanks for the great memories!

@@MattCookOregon Yes, both. Almost everything in the PNW except Rainer. Washington is one of my all time favorites. I've been trying to find my climbing journal. It is in a box in the garage. As I recall, we did a route on the East face because the rock quality was a little better and the routes were challenging. Jefferson is a thing of beauty. The approach alone is worth it. I haven't climbed anything serious for many years but I used to almost live at Smith Rock. This was before it became a theme park. I'm in my office writing this and looking at a picture framed on the wall of me and my climbing partner on the second pitch of Red Wall at Smith. So, lot's of good memories but as I said, I was younger then ha ha!

Great job Matt! I absolutely love the knife-edge ridge. Hanging a leg over each side of a precipitous drop. So cool.
This makes me want to climb 3FJ again.
Was there any permanent protection along the route.
Jim and I were fortunate. We scrambled to the chimney and there was another couple just ascending. He had a rope. We might have also had one, can’t remember. Way more experienced than we were he belayed us up, so we’re confident in the protection.
But yeah! What a summit. Must have been around 1980. Pretty sure 3FJ was much taller then and a still active volcano. Almost got splattered by hot lava several times.
Thanks for the great video! I’m inspired!

Me and my friend Josh climbed this back in 2013 with no rope. Really dumb idea on crumbling rock. I do remember the crawl spot being super exposed and sketchy. A couple folks who were ahead of us were just about to do the chimney when we caught them and looked dumb founded we didn't have rope but we did share a summit grapefruit up there with them. To this day I try to bring a grapefruit every time I summit something.

1 was a friend. The other 2 were new to me. The 3 of them are all search and rescue together.

@mattcookoregon What settings did you use on your gopro for this? Wide? Linear?

Think it looks good? This is a bit old so hard to remember. Definitely did not have my newer hero 11 at this point so the only options were wide or linear. Must be wide. Today I would use HyperView widest possible since the cam is so close to the rock and want to get the most in shot. I also like a mix between helmet and chest cam.

@@MattCookOregon awesome, thank you. And wow, super fast reply! A few friends and I are going to try this Saturday. We'll see how it goes :)

@MattCookOregon And yes, I've always had trouble capturing sheer drops on video in a way that is impactful. Yours nailed that element and gave me the sense of it. Maybe the subject rock helped hahaha

@@James-f9q Good luck. Let me know how it goes. I am hoping to get a Jefferson climb going but haven't got everyone's schedule to align.

Can I join to your crew? Or do you know any group? I would like to do this but with a group, not solo anymore

The only group I am part of is Obsidians. They are similar to Mazamas but smaller. Both those groups are good. Maybe I will do a mountain meetup one day? Keep in touch on here.
