One of the saddest quotes I ever heard is, "Every child is an artist until they are told that they're not." Children see things with new eyes, and I love seeing how they express their visions. I used to have children's summer art classes, not really the teach, but to provide materials, talk about ideas, and let them express themselves with art. The children and their moms told me how much they loved being there. So did I, and it was a happy time and wonderful memory for us all.
Much love and blessings to you from Texas - Patti

Hi from Annie this is a lovely video I love the thrift shop bargains etc really is a great way to cheer up. You got some great things there the two vases are very pretty and unusual too. You look lovely in what you wear all the time an I noticed your hair is slowly getting shorter which is nicer and shorter hair make us oldies look younger so try a short pixie hair cut that is what I have had for a few years now and it is carefree way to wear hair just wash and wear it no fuss. Try a different hair color too. Your natural color looks great. I put henna in my hair as it is natural and my skin is so sensitive etc I use that golden brass color in my hair I am a a natural dark blonde honey brown with golden tones so I keep close to my natural hair color. I do my own hair and nails it saves lots of money and I like it better.. I also like that red teapot you got goes with the reds in your kitchen the kettle and toaster etc. Your floral arrangements are inspiring I have tried to copy that style more as it looks more expensive too. Also paintings I get lots at op shops too and have all walls covered in them my place is small I rent from housing trust been here over 43 years and like to change the deco every season so rotate the art work often each season etc. I also get lots of nice old style picture frames and do the same thing put copy of art in there it looks very sophisticated too.

My Dad. He didn't say I wasn't good enough. He just said that no artists make enough to support themselves and I needed to be able to support myself. So, I turned my back on my artistic side (which I got from my Mother) and embraced my STEM side (which I got from him). That point is important because they didn't get along for most of my childhood. I don't know if he belittled art because the talent came from her and I'll never know.
Sure, I was able to support myself working in IT and I kept my artistic side buried under a pile of craft projects but then, one day I was home on extended medical leave and I picked up a paintbrush again. Maybe I'm not good enough to support myself with my art but I AM good enough to restore my soul with my art. And that's what is most important, isn't it, Susan?

Just finished watching your new weekly video.
Has anyone ever rained on my parade ? Yes , sadly yes through out my life . I’m almost 71 years old and have experienced prejudice since childhood.
Because of these experiences, I have a low self esteem and trust issues .
I became a widow in 2002 , at the age of 51 . I’ve chosen to remain single as my marriage wasn’t a good one .
When I was hospitalized in January with a heart attack, my daughter made sure to turn on your weekly videos because she knew that you brought me joy.
I almost died from the heart attack, followed by kidney failure and then a TIA ( mini stroke ).
Thank you Susan for your weekly videos, every Saturday I check UA-cam to watch you , as I pretend my friend has dropped by for a weekly visit .
I love being single and living alone but since all my health challenges I find myself lonely for the first time in almost 20 years.
I cry often and find it difficult . I’m told by medical professionals that this is common among heart patients.
I can’t take antidepressants because the last one put me in the hospital for 5 days with high BP .
I admire the way you find joy in life . I love hearing your laughter each week . Please continue to be you .
    Sincerely,
    Stella from Texas

You seem to be such an empath! It must be hard to be so in touch with all that emotion and insight all the time. Your emotional intelligence is also very keen. It’s a gift and a burden i think. Your positive attitude serves you well. Also your ability to appreciate the blessings we are surrounded by gives balance.
There you have it my armchair analysis of what I hear in your videos. All meant as positive appreciation for all you share. 😊

I was always a very good student in school but, for some reason, I didn’t enjoy history. My history teacher in seventh or eighth grade would sometimes make comments about me in front of the class. This video made me recall that - something that I have not thought of in decades, but is obviously still there. I am a cardiothoracic surgeon who is still going strong in my practice. It’s amazing how the hurtful things stick.

Kick his attitude to the curb! If you can’t do it physically, do it mentally! I had a husband like that. We were married 16 years and had two children together. He always put our son down and petted our daughter. We have been divorced now for over twenty years. He is still miserable, and he is quite alone. Very sad.

Good Morning Miss Susan, Thank you again for your thoughtful blog. I was raised by my Grandmother. She was born in 1883 and I was a teenager when she was in her 80"s! I never remember her complaining about anything and always seemed to be gracious and kind no matter the circumstances. As I grew older and married I started asking my Grandmother more about herself. What a life she had!! I hope to start writing a book about her soon. The greatest lesson I learned from her is "RESPONSIBILITY"!! A word rarely used or identified today. That word is the difference between "tragedy" and "accomplishment". 💗 from GA

Ah Susan. Another beautiful video. Always love your thrift store ones. So you asked us all to say if someone ever rained on us….my mother would often say I was a mistake….after a long pause she would realise what she said and say but a nice mistake. I never believed the addition because she only said it to hide what she really felt. But I took the hurt and even as a child I vowed to be kind to others. I would stand up for any kids being bullied and speak out for them, even though I was shy. I wonder would I have had the courage to do that if my mother had not said such a horrible thing so often. It drove me to make a difference in the world and here I am, still making a difference, spreading kindness when I can. I think in life we have a choice: become as bitter and cruel as the unkind person or choose kindness and vow never to be like that.

I packed my whole house myself in three months. So much to pack! And a basement and a garage and an attic and all my husbands tons of rock collection! That took me three years to move. I worked every night till midnight and beyond. Even the day the moving truck came I wasn’t finished packing!
    I was so motivated!
And it took me months to unpack it all!
I have a business, do shows and flea markets so tried to move all that stuff out before moving but it didn’t work. I had to bring everything with me. There was so much stuff they needed to get another truck!
But here I am six years later and it all worked out (with a lot of work and very little help).
You should see my garage now! Full up with stuff to sell! I love it!

My mother was an inspiration to all her children. She had to give up so much. She was born in Germany in 1929. She took operaratic voice lessons, ballet and piano. Then the War broke out and she had to give it all up. After the War was over Germany was split into East & West and she was in the East. She and four sisters escaped to the West between 1949 & 1954. Though she married my father and gave up her professional dreams she always encouraged us and also had a profound influence on my children through her stories encouraging them to pursue what ever made them happy. I wish I had your thrift shops here where I live. The vase is absolutely stunning and I have a small one in cobalt blue. What I was drawn to and would have gotten was the Chocolate Pot set! I am so drawn to those. We always used our best coffee services for our traditional German Kaffeeklatsch! It looked like a hand painted set, either German or French. I have so many, but I can never pass them up. The same for art. I just found a large beautiful painting of the Arc Dé Triumph it was signed and had a brass plaque on the frame & a label on the back. It was part of an estate sale & I bought many things. The women let me have the painting for $5.00 because I bought so much. Since I am packing to move we just set it in the garage covered in an old sheet. Last week the family was here getting there things from the garage for my granddaughters new home. My daughter looks at the painting and starts looking it up on her phone. She taps me on the shoulder and says Mom I think you better sit down. That painting you get for five dollars is worth $9000 & I fainted, it was in the triple digits that day. It's not in the garage anymore either.

I related to your comments as an artist that was told I could not pursue my journey but encouraged to get degrees …. Which I did. I got several degrees and certified in project and risk management and started and ran my own company but always wanted to paint. It was not until I was in my late 50’s that I just had to finally start my artist journey, it is never too late, to pursue your dream is what I told myself. I am so glad I listened to my inner voice pushing me to pursue my dream. I now sell original painting all over the world even to residents near Buckingham Palace and homes on Park Ave NY. I believe creativity is a gift from God. We all have our gifts in one way or another. Our gifts will always be challenged by darkness to steal, kill and distract from offering glory to God. I suppose it depends on our awareness of the spiritual battle that is occurring. Scripture gives us weapons to fight against the thief but all too often we march into the enemy's camp and lay our weapons down. Lets pray for our grandchildren and teach them the wisdom in God's Word. Bible stories, little conversations, praying together ... God loves the little children. I LOVE the way you decorate your home! You are blessed with quite a number of gifts! Another wonderful video, Susan! ❤️ Thank you! ❤️

I'm an empath and boy oh boy go to a mall and you come home exhausted. We all create our own lives. So, I think we all deal with ups & downs. Hopefully more ups than downs!

Hello . I am a new subscriber & actually binge watched your videos last nite & this morning. I adore you & just want to introduce myself. My name is Lisa & I'm 53 yrs old and I am starting over myself. I have never been truly alone & I have no family left either. NONE! So I found you-tube & make-up as my hobby. I always dream of having a channel someday but know nothing about cameras, lighting, and very very basic when it comes to computers. So I watch all kinds of you-tubers doing their thing & find that I gravitate towards the beauty community. I have learned so much over the last 3 years & have quite the extensive collection as well. I guess I may have acquired a shopping addiction (make-up mostly). I love all your content & just want to say how beautiful you are inside & out. Your voice is so soothing and your photography skills are amazing. So happy I found you. I live in a suburb of Chicago. Looking forward to getting to know you & Desi more :) I had a lady friend yrs ago in Florida who had 2 doggies like Desi. They are rare to see. May I ask what breed Desi is? I cannot remember the name of his breed

Susan, I was born the same year as you and at that time only 5% of the population was born out of wedlock so you and I were definitely told either verbally or through body language that we were not good enough. I just completed my doctorate and in high school the guidance counselor never bothered asking me where I wanted to go to college. It was when I became a Christian that I knew I had an adopted family and that what others said was of no consequence. I don’t look down on others but I do feel sorry for those who judge and I smile and say a prayer for them. God bless you as you share and make others feel good about themselves! I’m sure you do the same for your family!

After a 30 year absence, I began landscape painting this winter. I can't describe how much fun I am having. I grew up in a household with very little praise so I didn't believe in myself as an artist. However, my children and grandchildren give me lots of praise and encouragement. And, my husband said last week he is proud of me for pursuing my dream.
I love your treasures. Pier 1 was awesome. I miss shopping there.

You know sadness has value too. It makes the happy times more precious and it drives the creative spirit. I used to write poetry and my poems were often fueled by disappointment or loss. And a happy ending in a good novel often comes from that perspective as well. I love your vignettes. No wonder Desi stares at them. The charm and the warmth that emanates from them just flows through your rooms. And you apartment is surrounded by a dream like environment. I too thought of seeing Paris but l feel She is no longer who she used to be.

I think you have given light to a real problem, and that is depression. If we don't let our questions and insights about depression arise, then there never will be a better understanding. Your emphasis on the importance and happiness found in art and creativity is wonderful. I want happiness for my grandchildren too, and they also are so creative as are my daughters. Let's both be happy for the gifts that art can bring to ourselves and our families and not dwell in sadness, but let's bring our insights to the "front of the class". Thank you so much for this video.

I truly believe I have ptsd as a result of years with her lol Her name came up recently as I was told the one candidate for Sheriff was bringing her back as undersheriff, my anxiety shot up, then I smiled and thought gees I don't work anymore. My issue is that one can become addicted to the thrifting. I use to thrift often & bring the stuff at home and don’t know how to decorate and utilize my finds and they’ll sit in bags and then I just find myself donating the items back that I bought. So I admire how you’re able to use up everything you thrift-:)😀

Always wanted to tell you HOW MUCH I adore your trips to the thrift store! It’s not just the treasures you find, but your great comments and stories about them. I’m an appreciator of art as well, and antiques from the time I was a child as my Mom adored them as well. She collected antique linens and lace! I have her museum quality pieces she gave me. She spoke at many museums as she traveled around, about the art of making lace. It’s a lost art. I SO enjoy your appreciation of all forms of art and it makes me happy to know others appreciate it as well. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS, you should win awards for your editing and your music is to die for. I was going "buy the print! buy the print!" I also love the lamp with the mica shade. It looks early arts and crafts or prairie craft. Susan, I really love that you're choosing colors that are happy, vibrant and alive. No drama. Just pizza indeed! I wonder if red equates to getting your mojo back? I have noticed that flowers are speaking to you lately. They to me, are a huge sign of growth and rebirth and hope. The print of the state capitol spoke to me too. It gives me a sense of permanence and something lasting that will be around long after we're goine. It's also beautiful and graceful and becomes more so the older it becomes. Is that a metaphor for all of us over 50s? I think so. Thank you for another wonderful video. Hugs to you and Desi. He's such a sweet boy. He's a real boy; just look at those soulful little eyes.

P.S. I'm sorry to add. My son is creative and I worry about him too. I think that artists are deep and sensitive and they tune into a mood or vibration in order to translate it into the medium that they use. But, I don't think they necessarily are handicapped by it. If they have a firm foundation of support, then there's not a huge cliff to fall off of. And if artists really do have a tendency toward depression, then the new drugs that are available are a blessing. Depression runs in my family and we've really struggled getting my boy on the right drug and the right dose. He's finally happy, and stable and smiling. I hope that he does write as a career and I have to be sure to give him a soft place to land if a cliff appears. That would probably mean pot roast and a long talk, you never know. If your grandchildren are loved (AND THEY ARE SO LOVED) then they have a safe place to land.

Thanks for another beautiful video with lovely things & thoughts. About someone raining on my parade...when I was in 6th grade I had been out sick a couple of days. The morning I returned my friend told me that we were supposed to have written a poem about what liberty means to us and turn it in that day. I thought about it, and in about 5 minutes time I wrote my poem and turned it in. I was excited to see what grade I would get, because I thought I had done a pretty good job. That afternoon the teacher came to me and said that having my parents do my homework for me was not allowed. I tried to tell her that I had just written it, and didn't even know about the assignment till that morning, but she wouldn't listen. I wish I had kept the poem, but at the time it made me feel sad. I never had an interest in poetry again 😔

It is not always the most talented who becomes the most famous. I always remember a famous actress saying that 30 or 35 years ago. But I feel that the most important thing is to encourage ourselves and others to enjoy what we do no matter what someone else might say. I have decided at my advanced age of 75 to believe in myself. I just won't let anyone rain on my parade anymore. All my life I have been an also ran. Now I refuse to be discouraged by that. It doesn't matter if I win the prize. What matters is I accomplished my painting or book and that I love what I did. I am proud of my work and I know others beside myself will love it too.

I've been watching the 2022 Newport Folk Festival tonight. Joni Mitchell is there.
If you have not watched her sing Both Sides Now, there at the festival (You Tube), oh my gosh, I felt such joy watching her and she can still sing! She has retaught herself guitar since her stroke. She is 78. She was having a great time, smiling, talking, so into the music. I felt so happy for her and with her! I was full of that energy even though it was midnight. lol
It's not a given that artist-types become troubled. I think that many deep-thinking and deep-feeling souls become artists. Some of them lean into the sadness within themselves or in the world, and without guarding their heart and mind they become what they think about, write about, or sing.

All it took was for someone to rain on my parade once and I swore I would never be rained on again. That someone was my mother. When I left home at 18, I would write letters to her letting her know how I was doing in college and such. She never commented about enjoying the letters, but made a point of letting me know about all the misspelled words. She was a writer by trade, so I'll give her a pass on that, but it stung never the less. I went on to be a writer of sorts myself, but thank goodness for spellcheck now :). That vase is the most beautiful thing I've seen all day too ... maybe even all year. It looked like it might be a slightly eggplant color when the light filtered through it. My chosen profession was nursing. Not only was I a wife and mother, but, someone that could help people and be valued for my intelligence and my giving and caring soul.
There have been so many things that happened to me including my husband having an affair and leaving our marriage to haven been disowned by my mother after my dad passed on. How heartbreaking is that when you give and take care of one's parents your whole life and then getting that " still not good enough " feeling again.
However, God is always present in my life! He has carried me more times than I even know. He has put wonderful and inspiring people, like yourself, in my life for many years. With the help of a good therapist, I am now, at 72, feeling like I should have felt most of my life. I now realize that life is a journey and a process until we pass from this life to another.
THANK YOU for giving so much of your wonderful self to all of us!
I have one question, " how long does it take you to clean/dust your darling home?"....I hope that I made you smile !!

Creativity is a gift a most precious gift, it allow you to see the world in a different way, and do things that people don’t expect. You think outside of the box, and it needn’t mean a sad short life but a beautiful one. So many times the parade has been rained on, but you seek the sun and you find your calm. I went out for after work drinks, with my team, they like me as a boss, because the rain has helped me learn, how to be kind, how to encourage, how to believe, how to get them to be better; with a splash of rain at times. And to hear, “this is the best team, we work well together, we help each other out” is just the icing on the cake.

Love going virtural thrifting with you. Our thrift stores here in Arizona don't have anything like the thrift stores where you live.
I have never seen a Phoenix sewing machine. Loved the painting and the story behind it.
Your grandson is adorable; and, don't worry about them until they give you something to worry about. Just enjoy them.

Growing up I was painting, creating and so happy expressing myself. Since I did not fit the norm, I was never encouraged to pursue my art. Finally going away to college, I changed my major and found my own success. I learned to turn off all the negative comments and follow my artistic heart, regardless of age. Having courage in life is having blood in our veins to go on to greatness, never look back, keep your focus on how you achieve inner happiness.
Have a great week everyone ❤️💕.

As a child, I had a mother who thought that to give you any praise at all would make you grow up to be "big headed". Well...she did a good job of making sure I didn't.
From as early as I can remember I LOVED painting and drawing. My dad hung all of my newest creations in his work shop. He also would encourage me to draw from photos in magazines. He would say " I know you could make a fantastic painting of that house, or garden...anything. Art was my passion. In middle school we had an art teacher called Mr. Clibbon. Mr. Clibbon was an artist himself. He never taught me anything..I don't remember him teaching anything at all. I remember him sat at his desk working on his own art. He was a great artist. I would've given anything to paint like him, but I didn't know how. If he had said one positive thing about the art I had so enthusiastically painted I would have been overjoyed...but it never happened. On the last day of term, and my last day at that school, we were given our report cards. I wasn't allowed to open it. I had to give it to my mum to read first. I would be going to upper school after the summer holiday....I was nervous, but excited, because after that I was determined to go to Art School. I had my heart set on it.
My mum read my report card and said " Well, you're going to have to think about a proper job instead of art!" Mr. Clibbon had written a short sentence - " Karin needs to rethink her plans for the future, as art is clearly not for her." I think I cried nearly every night of the summer holidays. I was devastated...... BUT..... When I started upper school, I had an art teacher called Edwin Wilson 🥰 The very first piece of homework I handed in was held aloft by Mr. Wilson and praised for being "unique" ..... He said it was a fantastic painting 😱😱😱 Along with my lovely Dad, Mr. Wilson was my greatest encourager and I completed my A level art in one year (should take 2) and went on to Art School where a got pass with distinction in fashion and textiles. 🎉🎉🎉

Yes, my mother, she would always say that isn’t for you - that’s for the pretty girls. 60 years later I understand she wasn’t well but those words still haunt me.

There is beauty all around us. The changes COVID amplified can make it harder to embrace what is good, and real, and beautiful, yet that must become a mission. Change is hard, but we evolve, we overcome, we write a new chapter. Thank you for helping us see new perspectives, new opportunities. 🙏❤️🌻
