I remember meeting Walter at the Mcdonald's on King George Road in Brantford, he thought I looked lonely and decided to sit down and eat lunch with me.
I look back on that day with fond nostalgia because here was a total stranger who took the time to brighten my day.
He was an angel on Earth, and Brantford will never be the same now that he's gone.

For me myself my parents been the best, given me all. Sadly as teenager i was on a deep road, drinkin much, and i ended up at hospital with epelepsy.
That moment i did my only pray ever that i ask god for my life, and i would change. IT not been easy but i'm 43 yr now, single dad too a princess. I Oslo had the chance thank my parents for all they done, its for them i'm here still Olso.

Had a great time at dinner and were satisfied with our evening, and then comes in the legend, Walter Gretzky. We did not approach him, he approached us, realized that we were not from the area and we had a great chat about New Brunswick and the Maritimes. And then he asked if we wanted a picture, without provocation, and we agreed gratefully. Signed my edition of the HOF program and moved on to the next table to greet more fans. My dad and I stood beside Walter at a Fincups Jr. A game in Hamilton...when my brother was also in the league as an underage 16 year old like Wayne...
Walter was already a well known entity at the time in the hockey world....but suddenly in the middle of the game he turned to my dad...who he had not met before...and proceeded to speak at length about how much he liked my brother as a player...going back to recollections of specific plays even in minor league perhaps a year or two earlier. My dad was thrilled...and we were both in awe of his humility and passion for the game and even individual players. He was a wonderful modest man who became an icon not just because of Wayne but rather because he exuded the qualities we would want to see in everyone. We knew he was growing frail but this cuts deeply for every Canadian..I’m sure.

Our son won mvp of the Gretzky Tournament back a few years ago. Funny his trophy was almost as big has him. Walter laughed so hard and asked our son if he could have a picture with him. We were looking at that photo after we heard of his passing. Through our tears first and then laughter after we realized we had to go to Branford and pay tribute to a man that was the best. We laid flowers at the arena and at his home. We are from Simcoe but it was just what we felt in our hearts to do.

I was 14 yes old ( I’m 50 now) and I was at Canadian tire in Calgary with my dad buying a Wayne Gretzky Titan stick , on the way out we bumped into Mr Walter Gretzky and wow what a nice man and he was so I to knowing what position I played and how many goals I had and he signed my Gretzky Stick. Being the kid I was used that stick to play for many many years I wish I had kept it. For Walter to take time out of his day to meet an average kid who plays hockey and talk to me was just so awesome and I was a Calgary fan ha ha in Calgary. He will be missed and this is my one moment in hockey I remember 35 years later 🥲

Walter Gretzky was so nice. One year about 7-8 years ago my son's team played a tournament in Brantford. It was first class all the way, the facilities, the organization. His team won the tournament in their age group. The best for the kids and the parents was meeting Walter who was patiently signing for hours and having a few words. You could tell he was not 100% but NOTHING would take him away. RIP Walter.

Walter volunteered at the church I used to live beside, and I used to rake leaves with him when I was in grades 1 & 2. I remember being in awe at his kindness. He had a very strong presence that he carried with gentleness, grace and humility. A real legend, those memories will stick with me forever! Rest In Peace.

My deepest condolences to you all. It was heart breaking to watch the emotional reality of your loss Wayne. It was my great privilege to meet you all. Walter, yourself, Keith in Edmonton with Michael Barnett 20 years ago. Or Michael, or 'Barney' as Walter called him had arranged a get together. I had made a Polar Bear sculpture for you calling it the second best Canadian on ice and Mike figured you'd like getting it in person. A wonderful meeting it was indeed.
My nephew had asked if I could ask Walter to sign a puck for his dad, my brother in law. I asked and Walter said absolutely and took extra care as to not let my brother in law witness him signing and risk spoiling the 'Fathers Day' for my nephew. So great a gesture to a stranger, and a young man. Walter Gretzky was a wonderful man, his kindness was genuine. You Wayne are an incredible Hockey Player, no question, you got it all from your Father...
'The Original Great One' May God bless you all with the Peace of knowing he is safe and welcomed in Heaven by all those he loved and lost.
    'Rest In Peace'
    Mr. Walter Gretzky❤️

I’m a Big Gretzky Fan from the early 80’s from Nova Scotia. I moved to Hamilton for a few Years back in 2003 and one day I decided that I just had to travel over to Brantford to see the Gretzky house and to feel the Nostalgia of the days of the Backyard rink etc.So anyhow I got to Brantford and didn’t know where to go or anything and also forgot the paper I wrote the street name down on (Varadi Ave). I seen a man walking down the street so I pulled over and asked him which direction it was to the Gretzky home and that I was a big fan, not realizing the respect level the citizens have for Gretzky’s the man blew me off and said “I’d rather not give that information out”…I totally understood!…Now I was at a standstill & then I noticed a hockey card shop on King George st and decided to try another route.I went in and bought a few Gretzky cards from him and he said “Are you going down to Walter’s on Varadi Ave to see the house while your in town?…BAM!..I immediately remembered that was the correct street name so I said “which direction is that if you don’t mind me asking?”..He said “oh it’s just down the road ,you’ll see Wayne & Janet street and Varadi is straight ahead!..So away I went !..I eventually get there and I was so nervous for some reason that I pulled over for a min and turned my head and on the house it said “The Gretzky’s”…I’ve watched so many videos of the backyard rink and there I was right here where it all began, better yet I see a lady on the step knitting and it was Phyllis Gretzky!…I’m such a big fan that I was in awe !…So anyhow I got out of my 1998 Dodge Colt and walked out to take a Good picture of the house and Phyllis said “Hello are you looking to speak to Walter or anything”?..I said “OMG!..Are you serious?..He’s here and I can meet him?”..She said “Yeah he’s in the shower and he’ll be down in a min to see you, come sit up on the step here and wait if you want”?..I thought “Wow,that’s so nice to be so accepting to fans like this”!..I sat in the chair next to her and shared stories that I had of watching the old footage of Wayne skating around on the backyard rink and told her that she had the most famous backyard in Canada”!..lol..She said “oh Walter will take you around and show you everything when he comes down”.So after about 15 mins of chit chatting with Phyllis Gretzky Walter opens the front door and said “Hello,Where ya from”?…I said “Hello Walter I’m from Nova Scotia but I’m working in Hamilton,I’m a really big fan and I’m in awe that this is even happening”!..lol..He said “I had a guy with Nova Scotia plates pull up back in the mid 80’s and pull up some of my lawn with his hands and drive off so when I was doing some renovations a few years later I told our publicist to mention that if he wanted to come back he could have a bunch more dirt if he wanted it”…I laughed and said “was that while you were building the pool in the backyard before the ‘87 Canada Cup tournament Party?”…Walter said “This guy is a Fan!”…lol..Anyhow he took me around and showed me everything, the trophies & the backyard etc and said come out to my truck with me and I’ll give you an autographed picture of Wayne that he just sent down to me!”…My Eyes lit up like strobe lights!!..Walter opened the storage compartment and took out an envelope with probably 100 pictures of Gretzky (Rangers) all autographed for fans and he personally wrote it out to me above the autograph. I brought a the set of the Gretzky cereal boxes that were out at the time that had a Gretzky card in each box and Walter signed each one for me as well. After about an hour of hanging out with Walter & Phyllis they said “We’re having a BBQ if you want to hang around?”..”Brent is stopping by in a few mins and I’m sure he’d like to meet you”!..I was thinking “What do I say here?..am I wearing out my welcome?”…Anyhow a few mins later Brent showed up and we got talking about the ‘87 Canada Cup when Team Canada was in Sydney,NS for an exhibition game and he said “I remember We all went to a Tavern down the road from the rink that had great food”?..I said “Steel City?”…He said “Yeah that’s it!!..Thats the place!!”..I couldn’t believe that I’m sitting there bonding with the Gretzky family outta nowhere!…Then more people started showing up and I said “Thanks for everything guys, you guys are exactly like we are down home!”..Super hospitable!..I was driving away thinking “Did that really just happen?”..It’s a story that I’ll always have being a Big Fan of the Gretzky Family!..Absolutely Wonderful People all around!…They’ll be greatly missed!.

    Dear Gretzky family.
My heartfelt condolences on the passing of Walter. He was an amazing man. His love and pride for not only his family but the hockey loving Canadians was inspiring.
I met him only once but it was memorable. My son Hunter and I were traveling through Brantford on our way to Team Ontario tryouts for Incline Hockey and we stopped at McDonald's to get a bite to eat. Standing in line neither of us had any hockey garb on but Walter was at the counter waiting for his order. He turned and saw us at the back of the line and directly handed the two BIG bags back to the cashier and told her to put them under the heat lamps.
He then walked up to us and said Hi! He wanted to know what we were doing there that morning. I said we were headed to Team Ontario Incline tryouts. He then turned to my son Hunter and asked him a couple questions. Then he looked at me and said he's going to make the team. Congrats mom. Before I could say anything he took a knee and sang me Let me Call you Sweetheart. Then kissed the back of my hand and said his goodbyes. I wish with all my heart I had gotten a picture or autograph but we were beyond that. Walter was right. My son ended up aging out after playing for Team Ontario for 5 years. Bringing home a slew of silver medals but never the gold.
I am thankful to have met such a great man. My love to you all
