I have seen it many times already and I cry every time I see it !!! Capt Kirk should never have died in Gnenerations
Oh my!
Agreed. The role of Shatner as Kirk is his greatest feat, and he would've had MANY more years in him on the various series to reprise that role had he not been tragically ended. I could see him and Picard as close friends, plus Kirk getting a new starship command as well, such as a Ross-class. Imagine him reunited with Spock, Bones, and Scotty in TNG timeline as the original survivors still pulling off great feats for Starfleet, including in the Dominion War. His appearance would've been great to see on DS9, and even at his age now in the 3 seasons of Picard. Afterall, we've seen crew like Chekhov play his role as Grand Admiral, so it's not too far fetched to imagine great things that SHOULD HAVE been.
@@cwp1alpha Generations is less a movie than a deck-clearing exercise before the first 'proper' TNG fillm. When Generations was made, there was a court case, the outcome of which explicitly stated that TNG and the TNG films were a separate legal entity from the original Star Trek. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy had a contractual option to direct and participate in the creative process of Star Trek films, which that ruling blocked for future TNG films. Rick Berman wanted them to be kept out of the way, so Kirk was killed and Leonard Nimoy made it clear when he rejected to offer to direct Generations that he wouldn't just do a director-for-hire job. The Enterprise-D sets needed to be cleared for the new Voyager sets, so they blew up the Enterprise-D. It all felt horribly contrived. There should have been more films with Kirk and Spock - maybe even a miniseries. It was a terrible wasted opportunity. Little wonder that JJ Abrams, whatever many of us think of his films, wanted Leonard Nimoy back. Had there been a convenient way around Kirk's death, I suspect William Shatner would have been involved too!
@@cwp1alpha you realise most are supposed to be dead, right ? Had he not died on this mountain, he would have been dead from old age at the time Picard arrives. Kirk stayed the same age in the Nexus.
This was absolutely beautiful. Nice job to all who worked on it!
Finally got to see this and all I can say is wow. Beautifully done with so much emotion using no words. Amazing.
That’s a great analysis boys. I read that on X that Dave Blass mentioned that this or any of the other OTOY work was not associated with the Section 31 film, which was a relief. Saw the special thanks to Kevin Feige, Ari Emmanuel and Alex Ross as well, powerful allies. Hope this technology has a bright future for us classic Star Trek fans.
Leave it to Sam, Stewart, and Trekyards to build my appreciation even more for one of the most inspirational Trek shorts I've ever seen...
Kudos to Sam for the breakdown! Kudos to Stewart & Trekyards for representing my love of Trek well! And, absolutely, Bravo to OTOY for giving us a moment of truth in Trek content today!!
This short is so good it’s almost hitting the realms of magic on both an emotional and technical level.
Maybe it’s Michael Giacchino score taking it to the next level the guy could score doing laundry and make it epic.
Cheers guys for getting down and looking at the granular nitty gritty. It always gives a great perspective
In the beginning of 765874 - Unification when Kirk's hands are going over the plants (or flowers),, it reminded me o the end of Gladiator just after Maximus dies.
Good catch!
Oh man, I'd love to chat about this with you guys. It was super neat to be involved with this project.
Hi Gordon! We would love to chat to. Samuel, our co-host messaged you on Instagram. Lets get chatting!
@@Trekyardswebseries BIG question is... could there be another movie in the making and fitting between the OG movies or after the final movie ??
It`s the question also who owns the rights to Star Teck images the families or studio my opinion is the the families that own the rights... If approached correctly permission`s could granted to make a full movie with there images...
Another thing to add, Otoy made this with the blessing and direct involvement of Paramount which makes this actual Star Trek canon
It makes it officially licenced, like star trek online ir the books.
Only what appears on screen in a tv show or movie is canon
Screws my system up, til now Shatnerverse was the only post tng canon I recognised 😂
Nothing beats _Trek_ when done by those who love it!
The Irony here is that Shatner has always worn a wig (or similar) even in TOS he was wearing a wig. Joan Collins made a point to mention repeatedly the anecdote about catching him in make up without the wig on. So blending real hair with fake hair is a huge irony here too just as they had to do for the real Kirk for his entire career.
What’s also impressive is apparently a lot of the digital prosthetics was shown IN REAL TIME. So, Sam was able to act off that to better his performance- like looking at a mirror. A lot of his expressions matched Shatner. At various points, I actually forgot this was an actor with a cg face.
Kirk is back and he's been doing his afterlife situps
Great work fellas! It may not be perfect but it really is a work of true art and a wonderful entry into canon in my opinion.
They should do a Star Trek: Nexus series. Capt. Archer gets scooped up in the Nexus and he is thrown from one scenario to another helping those he meets to accept and love their real lives and leave the Nexus. Guinan's echo can be the new Al and the Nexus itself is Ziggy.
Can't watch this without ending up a weepy mess 😂 that short broke me I swear, it's absolutely beautiful.
Edit: just a note about the microexpressions and how authentic Kirk acts in the short, I think as well as the CG which gives him the look, Sam Witwer really needs praise for the performance, to a degree he has to have matched Shatner's mannerisms very close for the CG to really work, I imagine his fairly extensive mocap work for videogames probably helped there, he's very good at exaggerated facial acting from that background, love Sam Witwer the guys a legend.
No one's really ever gone..
😊😵😢😂😊😵😢😂😊
Red Letter Media ‘No One’s Ever Really Gone’ Star Wars tribute video…..needs a Star Trek Version😵
TOS kirk looks closer to first season of TOS.
That blew me away how cool that was! Made me feel like wanting to see more of 60s kirk again
Still amazed by this. And in all fairness yes there is adjustment for different faceshape, however Shatner wears wigs. In my opinion whether for ego or as a design choice it looks like Otoy fixed Shatner's wig in Generations because it wasn't the best. They also made is costume fit better than it it did in Generations. In my opinion Otoy are going for "the best version of an actor/costume" from the period they're emulating. Not necessarily real life accurate.
Ty so much for the analysis in this video, I keep missing live streams due to commitments.
I had no idea Sam Witwer played Kirk. That's amazing 😲
I was more blown away when i saw 60s Captain Kirk! That was mind blowing!
BEAUTIFUL!!!👏🏿👏🏾👏🏽👏🏼👏🏻🖖🏿🖖🏾🖖🏽🖖🏼🖖🏻🖖
Look what Paramount and Bad Robot took from us. :*(
Sam nailed all the expression of Shat, truly impressive!
Hit that like button!
It looks like this Alien was taking spocks family and friends to see him before he died. They had already been there and back from the Kelvin timeline when Kirk arrived. Kirk was most probably revived from Project Pheonix, which spock was most probably the one that started this program.
William Shatner tweeted about it. Old Kirk is him (Wittwer is the body double and the two younger versions) and in the beginning is completly him.
The creatives behind the project and Sam Witwer the actor himself say he played every version of kirk. We have a BTS shot shown here of the older kirk being played by Sam.
Otoy said the same thing the other night in a livestream
@@brandonpeterman9964 Sam Witwer said he played all 3 Kirks on our live stream. Link to theirs would be great.
God, where to even begin?
I'm not even gonna go into anything technical, as that'd take up a day, but the emotional impact of this short film has restored my hope that Trek is in good hands going forward. Ever since "Generations", I've always wished Kirk and Spock had gotten the opportunity to say goodbye to each other. The same sentiment for Shatner and Nimoy. OTOY has achieved both as far as I'm concerned. The sense of closure from this film is palpable.
Sam Witwer, Lawrence Sellek, and everyone at OTOY deserve every accolade they receive for this monumental achievement!
i think that this is a bigger project ...we gonna see more things...they did a great great job
They should combine regeneration with 765874 unification it be cool and emotional in Star Trek
The only thing that made no sense to me is the Discovery time agent insert.
Kirk would not have known him.
To many, Discovery is an alternate universe so how doesn't it fit in here...
Had that happen to me...i would have said thats a demon to fool me!
Astounding job. I suppose in-camera effects will be the norm from now on.
Why did they unlist the video? I had to google the thing to find the direct link to it.
It was never listed, for some reason. Its popularity was entirely due to word of mouth!
such a great movie
13:45 Were they trying to recreate Kirk from Generations though? He looks younger than that; more like William Shatner circa 1982/TWOK which was 12 years before Generations.
This is set after Generations with the re-animated Kirk from Picard S3. That is why he is in his Generations uniform and gets his Generations scratched combadge back. We see the younger TWOK Kirk in the piece along side the generations version.
@@SGUDistantHopeIt’s not a comm badge…just a starfleet insignia. TMP-era communicators weren’t worn on the chest.
@@stephenlow1841 Very true, they were not combadges until the Enterprise C in which the badge had that functionality.
But you all knew what i meant :) Freidan slip
The tos Kirk in unification looks very much like shatner in the season 1 promotional images
He was in his prime! That was cool!
Unification is Fantastic I Hope they Use this in the Future of Star Trek Strange New Worlds if they want to Bring back Shatners Kirk Possibly for a Episode Revolving the Temporal Cold War and the The Temporal Time Cops maybe Jumping Through Time and They end up on the TOS Enterprise, Fingers Crossed.
I loved it. It sounds horrible but after watching it - I kinda wanted to see them do a full episode with the "Original" cast.
According to Otoy Sam only played the younger version of Kirk, William Shatner actually played "Generations era" Kirk
Sam Witwer the actor himself say he played every version of kirk. We have a BTS shot shown here of the older kirk being played by Sam. It has been told to us that William Shatner acted as the exec producer and not an actor.
The CG Kirk looks more like ST4 era
I see quite a yellow cast to Kirk's face, compared to pink tone of the reference photos. I know they can fix that in color correction and in compositing, but I'd like to see the generated face looking a bit less like the tone of Data's skin.
Is that Apollo garden ?
What will it take now for a proper feature film to be made with this technology 😮
Can anyone tell me where the original video is? I cannot for the life of me find it on the internet.
ua-cam.com/video/mgOZFny7F50/v-deo.html
It has been unlisted since day 1, which makes it going viral all the more impressive.
@@Trekyardswebseries Thank you
Proper star trek
They said that Witwer was only young Kirk, that it was deaged Shatner. His neck looks older, shorter, and thicker.
Sam Witwer the actor himself say he played every version of kirk. We have a BTS shot shown here of the older kirk being played by Sam. It has been told to us that William Shatner acted as the exec producer and not an actor.
Can you source where they said that Shatner was in full costume for the intro sequence.
This short film is canon.
Unless it appears on a TV series/movie it is not.
It is however, licenced just like Star Trek Online/Books etc.
@Trekyardswebseries I understand that had always been the position. However, things have changed since Alex Kurtzman took over. There are so many egregious violations of canon in ST Discovery, SNW, etc. that those appalling new series should be disregarded. The authoritative people involved in Unification, @WilliamShatner et al, and its absolute moral and artistic integrity, make it canonical.
@@raymondlavertue8429 Head canon is a wonderful thing, but for us at Trekyards, we have to speak to the full real canon.
Do you consider The Animated Series to be part of "the full real canon"?
Its Def Canon to me!
The young Kirk in particular still retains elements of Sam Witwer's face with his jutting jaw and flat cheek bones. When he turns away from the camera it is the most obvious.
Kirk is not back. This was a Lost style Kirk and Spock meeting before they “move on” to the afterlife together. They died in different universes
Shatner said that the first shot of Kirk was actually himself!
The creatives behind the project and Sam Witwer the actor himself say he played every version of kirk. We have a BTS shot shown here of the older kirk being played by Sam.
In some shots, Generations Kirk looks more like Wrath of Khan or Search For Spock Kirk.
🖖
You know it all mostly CGI, because Shatner does not monologue in it... Illusion broken... lolll
The character is back living breathing flesh and blood.
Shatner should have done monologue!
They've conquered the uncanny valley but it's still only 99%. AI can't generate enough detail and the neckline is obvious in most shots.
I love that they merged the Marvel comic book story into this.
I was very happy with the end result of this. I think it brought back Kirk and Spock for a lot of fans. I know it did to me.
Sorry, but I'm a mega fan of the same age of ST, yet am not as moved as everyone seems to be with these shorts. Although highly entertaining, really, it's still too 'uncanny valley' deep fake for me.
Yeah it surprises me how not many people seem to see the fakeness like I do. Maybe it's because we know it's fake, that we see it as such but I'm just not super impressed by it. I appreciate the work out into it though.
This is early technology and it's quite expensive. Give it 10 years it will be radically better. Any way I enjoyed the story and it was emotional for me.
How far have we fallen, when AI-generated nonsense is revered as the best Trek has to offer now?
@@GeoffTrowbridge wow. You sound like a desperately happy person.
This was def Not nonsense to see! Im glad Shatner signed off on it
I watched this a few days ago now so you're late to the party anyway. Also, it doesn't really need breaking down. The artistry surrounding it speaks for itself. So why this (and countless other ad heavy channels) need to disect the material is beyond me. Yawn. Bye, bye.
We did a live about this the day after it came out and had 5 people of the shorts production jump in and say hi.
We do large analytical content on Saturdays, todays Saturday.
Sorry you don't enjoy it, lots in these comments are :)
As this "unification" is obviously so successful and everyone is swooning about it, the next thing we are going to get is Battlestar Galactica Unification in which it is revealed that the male Starbuck from the original series is actually Kara Thrace after a sex-change operation and that Zarek is a memory-wiped Apollo sent back in time. I'm so looking forward to that. 🙄
I didn’t get the whole video. Why start with Gary Mitchell? A quick shot of him and that’s it. Didn’t need to be there.
The whole video is just look at this look at that OMG there’s Spock. I honestly have no idea what the point of this video was other than pointless nostalgia.
