The details he puts in the lyrics of this song are what makes it so incredible.
He's not a rough guy, he's "rougher than the timber shipping out of Fond du Lac". He didn't put her in a wooden coffin, he "carved the cross from live oak, and a box from short leaf pine". He didn't bury her grave deep in the ground, he "buried her so deep she touched the water table line". The writing paints is so vividly.

Southeastern was the album where I discovered Jason Isbell. I love his songwriting and his band the 400 Unit are real solid players. I've seen Jason in concert 7 times and going for my 8th in August this time with Sheryl Crow! This intimate performance is amazing and really lets you truly feel the emotion of the song. The story sucks you in like a good suspense novel. Enjoy!

Fantastic performance. Isbell is becoming one of THE great American Singer- Songwriters. Southeastern is his best work to date (Solo or with DBT). It can be a tough listen, but that's the point. Jason Isbell's conviction as a musician and as an artist shine through here.

These lyrics are simple amazing. They make sense listening to them, but the contrast of what the guitar and fiddle (violin) are playing compared to the lyrics and how they are sung, give this song a much deeper greater feeling and meaning with a real sense of emotion indescribable by even the most complex words. There is no other way to sing what he is singing. He does and amazing job writing music like this.

Speaking as a violinist, I can see her bow technique really isn't very good, but dang! She pulls it off really well in spite of that! With a little formal training she could get twice as much out of that instrument, and that's just scary. Oh, yeah, the song is mind-blowing too, as are most of the other Jason Isbell songs I've discovered in the last week or so.
