Mike absence is definitely noticeable, he has a great way to express himself and brings something unique to the reviews. That said, Camilla brings a great energy to the group.
Hey Tom, JRR Tolkien died on the 2nd September, 1973, so it'll be the fiftieth anniversary of that this year. Any chance of a commemorative list about the best (and maybe worst) Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit/Middle Earth game around that date?
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne 1973 backwards. Just a curiosity.
Great discussion! I especially was interested to hear Zee's and Camilla's comments as they aren't dyed-in-the-wool fantasy fans. In defense of the puzzle aspect of Legends of Andor, anyone who has spent time playing D&D will know that often you do need to figure out a way to solve a problem beyond just bashing heads. I find that makes Andor more immersive. And in defense of including Everdell on this list, Redwall is considered fantasy.
Ok, so I truly believe that Star Wars is space fantasy. Space setting, fantasy everything else. With all of the space everything, there is no science. It could be magic space travel for all it is explained. They story’s are completely fantastical. Sci-fi is more than just space ships. I hate to disagree with you all. I love all you do!
This a hundred times. SW is not "based in science" like Zee said. Its based in nonsense. Star Trek is SciFi, Star Wars is just Lord of the Rings in Space.
While I love the usual trio, I like getting to see others like Camilla share these top 10 moments. Everyone always has such great chemistry. Great list! Sounds like we really need to try Massive Darkness 2.
Wow, I just realised that after being in this hobby for almost a decade and playing thousands of unique titles, I wouldn’t be able to make a top 10 list that is theme based unless that theme is sci fi or horror. If I try and do fantasy, I don’t actually like many, and the few I do like are not thematic of might just be horror or monsters. Here’s my attempted top 10 fantasy: 10. Bunny Kingdom 09. The Others: 7 Sins 08. Blood Rage 07. Lost Ruins of Arnak 06. Rising Sun 05. Gloomhaven 04. Caverna with Forgotten Folks expansion 03. Terra Mystica 02. Everdell 01. Kingdom Death: Monsters
Going in order from strongest "fantasy" theme to weakest like they did: 1. Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn 2. Return to Dark Tower 3. Gloomhaven 4. Wildlands 5. Aeon's End 6. Call To Adventure 7. Res Arcana 8. A Game of Thrones: The Card Game 9. Arcana Rising 10. Abyss
I started playing Magic in the very early days of Revised, when it was still generic fantasy and I was young enough to want to immerse myself in the imagination of all the creatures and characters. As it has gotten more corporatized and standardized over the years I think the game has improved a lot but the themes and worlds have gotten more sterile and less approachable, the way Camilla was describing.
Board games as pop culture taglines: Last Bastion : When you're here, you're family. Legends of Andor: Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
Lots of great games…and I agree with Zee on Res Arcana. Right now it is my most played game. If it isn’t my favorite, it is pretty close…especially with the last expansion.
With Mike gone, I feel like this is the best three person group for top ten lists. I’m glad to see a list with these three featured. Camilla is very engaging and plays off Tom and Zee very well.

Absolutely yes! That said, I still wouldn't count it for a list of fantasy board games. I probably would focus rather tight around high fantasy and similar.
Huge fantasy fan. Tons of omissions here. Mage Knight, Gloom of Kilforth, Zombicide: Black Plague, Defenders of the Realm, Clank!, Aeon’s End, Hero Realms, Dungeon Alliance, Adventureland, Valeria Card Kingdoms, Fantasy Realms, Sword & Sorcery, Mythic Battles, Tiny Epic Dungeon, and more borderline fantasy, Champions of Midgard and Blood Rage. Lastly, Everdell is not fantasy. If you include that, might as well include Lost Ruins of Arnak and Dune: Imperium and many others.
Everdell is most certainly a fantasy game! It may not fit comfortably next to the mostly medieval fantasy choices in your excellent picks, but don't disparage the obvious fantastical elements of Everdell because there isn't a dragon or long sword.
@@Xammblu_Games I accept there is a definition of fantasy that includes Everdell. But that same definition probably includes Marvel games, sci-fi games, post apocalyptic games, etc. Basically anything make believe. What distinguishes Everdell, the fact it is set in a forest? And perhaps this is my own bias, but since I love traditional fantasy, and there are so many great games within that narrower definition, I’d rather have watched a top 10 focused only on those.
You're correct, fantasy is anything not rooted in reality. That's why Tom is wrong about Star Wars, it isn't Sci-Fi because science fiction was typically rooted in actual science and technology and potential science and technology, it is usually an argument for or against certain developments (see Brave New World for example, it comes with a message about the development of technology and quite a lot of the things in it have been proven more accurate than people think. But it was completely rooted in the scientific discussions of the day. Star Wars isn't, it's fantasy in space)

A fantastic show, loved it! Next year’s crowdfunding for DT needs to include a Zee Garcia voiceover for a game or something. It’d be crazy fun with all that wit that y’all come up with. Also, the Staying Alive/I Will Survive sound-alike music mash playing as the credits roll makes it worth watching until they end. Good Golly, your productions have taken flight!
Heroquest and Advanced Heroquest, Fantasy Realms, Ethnos.....and I'm suprised Clank didn't get a mention! No idea why Tom chose some obscure card game over Clank : 0
Looking at my rated games, I don't even know what qualifies as fantasy. Here is my top 10: 1. Root 2. Spirit Island 3. Broom Service 4. Terra Mystica 5. AuZtralia 6. Warcraft (only with the expansion) 7. Battle Lore 2E 8. Catacombs 3E 9. Rising Sun 10. Feudum But after everything after #5 is "only" rated a 7 for me. Does not seem like top 10 material, but I just haven't played that many fantasy games, I guess.
Apologies for waving my nerd flag... Star Wars is a Space Opera, ... but it's not sci-fi. Calling it sci-fi is like saying Mad Max is a racing series just because it has cars.
And the fact that it's not sci-fi is exactly why it's so popular. Lucas set out to write an absolutely generic hero's journey fantasy and no surprise that resonated with people, when that story has for literally thousands of years. I guess every generation needs their own version of it.
Need the tom zee mike energy. camila is great, but maybe their synergy will get better with time. feels like there isnt a lot of crosstalk or group discussion its just kinda this is this, ok next, this is that, ok next.
Sorry guys, but Disney films with anthropomorphic, Wind in the WIllows characters or zombies is not what is meant by 'Fantasy Games'. I remember the iffy DT Wargames video with Sam and Zee. By not following game themes I think Inspector Gadget and James Bond would classify as Sci-Fi...
I think the versatility of Hero Realms should get more love. Multiplayer head to head, team against one boss, campaign, stand alone vs character progression. Races, roles, etc.
1. Magic: The Gathering 2. Lords Of Waterdeep 3. The Witcher: Old World 4. Vindication 5. Hero Realms 6. Mystic Vale 7. Res Arcana 8. Talisman: The Magical Quest Game 4th Edition 9. Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure 10. Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (any version)

It is not out of theme at all, it is like Camy said: Prioritizing your actions. I have those 4 big boxes and only Star Shield legend expansion and dude, what a blast. Excelent world, excelent story, excelent artwork. Just love it. I truly believe this game deserves much more than what it gets, but that's me I guess.
In Canada, we have the same problem with Bell and Rogers, they are both awful, evil companies that have a stranglehold on Canadian media, internet and cell phones. They are also in league with politicians (Toronto’s past mayor was on the board of rogers, clearly no conflict of interest there) and they are both in league with the CRTC (our FCC).
Science Fiction - in our universe ie: Star Trek - no fantastical elements Science Fantasy - not in our universe ie: Star Wars - has fantastical elements Sorry Tom, wrong on this one :)
Maybe to illustrate the point why Star Wars is not science fiction: Star Wars is closer to The Lord of the Rings than it is to Star Trek. It's a space saga. But "space" does not automatically make it sci-fi. Yes, there are elements of sci-fi in Star Wars, but overall it is not sci-fi. Science is not a main topic, it probably is not even one of the side topics.
Thank you for having a female perspective in your top 10 list with Tom and Zee. Nothing against Mike Dilisio, however, when trying to get my wife interested in games, it helps to have a female point of view regarding top games to play.
I'm not trying to be difficult or provocative, but Star Wars is space opera *and* fantasy, not science fiction. I think much of what you are calling "generic fantasy" (dwarves, elves, bards, paladins, wizards, etc.) is more commonly referred to as "high fantasy."
I'll stand on this pedestal... Star Wars is NOT science fiction. Space ships, laser guns and aliens do not define the genre. The best definition for Sci-Fi is from Isaac Asimov, "Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology." Sci-Fi is a speculative form of fiction. It asks important philosophical questions about science and technologies. Stories that can be somewhat tangible. Nearly everything in Star Wars is allegorical or an homage to either other works or parts of history. It doesn't explore the concepts of how hyperspace would effect humanity or anything like that. Maybe it explores aspects of what it means to be human - most works of fiction does. Alternate History fiction is more adjacent to Sci-Fi than Star Wars, because Alternate History at least deals with the human reaction to changes of something - in this case it would be history. If you want to say that popular culture has mistakenly conflated genres with settings, we can agree on that. But just because you have space ships and aliens does not mean you have a story that ultimately explores issues of human's reaction to things like ethically questionable medical advancements, the risks of automation, or extraplanetary colonization.
Even the setting is barely sci-fi. There's no framework or rules or limits based on any (fictional or non-fictional) science, all of their tech is basically powered by magic and just works how the writers need it to work at any given moment. I would even argue that the magic in Harry Potter is less "fantastic" than the tech in Star Wars because there's actually some rules for how stuff works and how it doesn't.
@@andrethannhauser6302 That's not science. Nor is it about the changes in science or technology. If it was sci-fi, the movies would be based on some sort of conceptual scientific/technological scenario. What if genetic manipulation could allow you to access an invisible field that unlocked abilities like telepathy or sense danger? The human response to this breakthrough in general manipulation, telepathy, and sensing danger would all be major themes of the film. Jurassic Park is sci-fi. Star Wars is not
What a weird take on Star Wars Tom. It is clearly fantasy in space. That isn’t being silly. They don’t explain or attempt to explain any of the tech and they use the force. You complain about generic fantasy and then refuse to accept alternative fantasy settings?
Star Wars is a indeed sci-fi. Lasers. Spaceships (X-Wing. Star Destroyers. Death Star). Robots (droids. R2D2. C3P0) Machines like ATAT attack walkers and speeder bikes. The "swords" or light sabers are even high powered lasers or energy weapons.

Star Wars is 100% fantasy. Knights, wizards, fantasy powers, made up creatures, etc.
Red guard || Voidwarden > Hatchett
would rising sun count towards the list.
Absolutely - it's fantasy in a feudal Japanese-inspired setting.
@Brice Lory I would add it to this list. The game play is great and visually look amazing even if the modles are paint or not

Your pure dislike of Comcast is shared by many. You are not alone my friend.
No talisman? Oh. Cmon

Thank you for having a female perspective in your top 10 list with Tom and Zee. Nothing against Mike Dilisio, however, when trying to get my wife interested in games, it helps to have a female point of view regarding top games to play.
Star Wars is Space Fantasy and not Sci-Fi. I mean Jedi are like Wizards.
I'm not trying to be difficult or provocative, but Star Wars is space opera *and* fantasy, not science fiction.
I think much of what you are calling "generic fantasy" (dwarves, elves, bards, paladins, wizards, etc.) is more commonly referred to as "high fantasy."
Too many bones!!!
I'll stand on this pedestal...
Star Wars is NOT science fiction. Space ships, laser guns and aliens do not define the genre. The best definition for Sci-Fi is from Isaac Asimov, "Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology."
Sci-Fi is a speculative form of fiction.
Star Wars is not
@@joeshufelt Jurassic Park is a monster movie. Not scifi.
What a weird take on Star Wars Tom. It is clearly fantasy in space. That isn’t being silly. They don’t explain or attempt to explain any of the tech and they use the force. You complain about generic fantasy and then refuse to accept alternative fantasy settings?
Star Wars is Space Opera :p
Star Wars is a indeed sci-fi. Lasers. Spaceships (X-Wing. Star Destroyers. Death Star). Robots (droids. R2D2. C3P0) Machines like ATAT attack walkers and speeder bikes. The "swords" or light sabers are even high powered lasers or energy weapons.
Sci Fi pirates = Ice Pirates 80s movie. And, more Camilla please.
No Mike :(
Camilla :D
Spectrum is worse lol
Generic fantasy (orcs, goblins etc) has got to be THE most tired and boring theme in board games. Great to see such variety on the lists.
