Rob: Rob here at etrailer.com and today you're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite class three custom fit trailer hitch receiver on our 2011 Audi Q5. Now here's what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. It's going to have a really clean almost factory appearance to it, because the cross tube is going to be completely hidden behind the bumper and all we're going to see is that receiver tube sticking out.Our hitch is a class three, so it's going to give us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. And it is going to have the widest variety of options when it comes to accessories. Whether we want to tow a trailer, we can put a ball mount in there. Make some room on the inside of our Audi by putting some of the gear on a cargo carrier or if we want to take a bike ride, we can put a bike rack in there, carry a couple bikes.
But however we're going to be using it, all of our accessories are going to mount to the hitch pin hole here on the side. Our hitch is going to accept a standard 5/8" pin and clip. Now these are not included with the kit, but you can pick them up here at etrailer.com, along with some locking devices to make sure everything's nice and secure. Now you may be wondering what this secondary hole towards the opening of the receiver tube is for. Now that's going to be exclusively for the J pin stabilization device. And the way this is going to work is we're going to take the large threaded section going through the hitch pin hole and then we'll attach the nut to the other side.
And whenever we tighten that nut up, it's going to cause this hook to go into that secondary hole and draw it in. Which is going to apply pressure to our accessory and keep it from rattling around when we're driving down the road. Now the J pin is also a locking device, so it's going to make sure our accessories are nice and tight and secure. Now this is sold separately and you can find it here at etrailer.com.Now if you are going to be towing a trailer obviously you need a spot to hook up your safety chains. Now ours are going to be a loop style.
They're going to well into the bottom of the receiver tube. Which can be a really nice, because we're not going to have to worry about any kind of interference from our pin and clip or a locking device. But keep in mind with really small hooks, you may have a little bit of trouble getting them in place just because of how thick this flange is right here. Now whenever you're looking for a hitch for your Q5, you want to make sure that it's up to the task that you're going to be putting it to. So as far as the weight rating goes, our hitch is going to have a 750 pound tongue weight. It's going to be the maximum downward force at the end of the receiver tube.
That's going to be great for some of those really large bike racks carrying even four all the way up to five bikes. Or really maximizing the carrying capacity of those really large cargo carriers. Now as far as the gross trailer weight rating goes, our hitch is going to have a 5,000 pound rating. That's how much it can pull including the trailer and everything we have loaded on it. Now you do want to double check your Q5's owners manual, because we don't want to exceed the manufacturers recommended weight.I'd like to give you a few measurements and these are going to help you whenever you're looking for accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's right about three and 1/2 inches. That measurement's going to help when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have adequate room, they're not going to come in contact with the rear bumper. And from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, it's right about 15 and 1/2 inches. That measurement's going to help you out when you're looking for a ball mount. So you can find the appropriate rise or drop to match up to your trailer. But now that we've seen our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's get it installed together. To begin our installation, we want to open up the rear hatch on our Q5. We're going to pull out all the floor coverings. We can leave the spare tire in place. But we want to pull out the tray and that floor covering, covering up the spare tire. Then we'll come to the very back where we have our threshold. Want to grab at the bottom of it and we're going to pull straight up. It'll release the clips. You just want to start on one end and work your way across. Now don't pull up too high because there are some wires that are connecting it. So you want to to break it l
