    When Pogacar said he felt like he was overeating and the energy wasn’t getting into the legs, that doesn’t mean he was good on calories. What people might not realize about bonking is that when you hit that wall you’re DONE and the body doesn’t start to recover until you’ve stopped your effort. That’s why timing your calories is just as important as having enough for the day. When you look at Pogacar’s bonk, he did not get the calories at the right time and allowed himself to ride past the limit. Once he was that deep in the red, it wouldn’t have mattered how many calories he tried to take at that point since the body already transitioned to self-preservation mode.

  • @Khurw
    @Khurw Місяць тому +4

    A few factorts to consider most of which have been mentioned before:
    - The injury; 3 weeks on the road
    - No serious and focused altitude camps geared towards the tour, Chris how much do you think this makes of difference compared to this year, where he is doing multiple like the Jumbo did? Because if we look at the Jumbo riders, each time they do altitude camps it seem to X x their performance by quite a bit.
    - Changed physical trainer and thereby the way he trained over the winter and towards the tour.
    - Changed his programming to be more tailored towards the tour/GC, the giro combo is interesting thou how that is going to affect the tour.
    - The last point cannot be stated enough and I think it is actually understated in the current conversation. This is the first year where Tadej isn't in the white jersey. Let that sink in for a moment. Ofcourse the landscape changes in regards to how fast new riders get up to speed, we seen that with Tadej no doubt. But if look at any kind of ultra endurance sport, almost everyone (with exceptions ofcourse) peak much much later, especially when it comes to building up peak work capacity. This means Tadej has still ton of room for development, especially when it comes to reserves in week 3. This obviously needs to looked upon in the context of the rest and not insolation as Tadej's main rivals are also below their peak years theoretically speaking like Jonas. So Jonas will most likely also keep developing for quite some years, which we have seen the last two years as well
    I am not trying to make any conclusion of who is a better GC, they are almost equally so far, but trying to contextualize last year a bit..
    What do you guys think?

      To @Bill-cy2cy
      Bled is very touristic place and rather packed, because is just a small Alpine town around the lake. Unfortunately last year they started to build a new road, which will bypass the traffic around the town, but construction work is still ongoing and officials are warning us about traffic jams. But Bled is very nice place indeed. Simply from touristic side for walk around or few km beside there are place like Soteska Vingard (a gorge some 4km away you will need to book the tickets before over the internet), Bohinj (another lake and surrounded by hills 20km), for the rest just check the internet or ask Tourist office. About the biking? Myself I am having hardtail and my idea is going Up .. roads, gravel: for that kind .. around Bled is Pokljuka (towards biathlon center) and down to Bohinj via Uskovnica back to Bled, like

  • @Kn0s

    Calories in power out, not always that simple. You have to be able to process what you eat. We have historically seen that Jonas is more efficient on very high calorie days. Pogacar is trying, but I don't think his body can handle it the same way, that's what we see anyways (Ventoux, granon, hautacam, Marie Blanc, la Loze)
    Don't think you can factor the other riders and their times in too much on this stage, they had a very different run into that climb.

  • @ravi06197

    There was one point in last year's Tour i.e. the Joux Plane stage, where Pog failed to pick up a bidon at the start of the climb and was visibly unhappy. When he made his attack on that stage later, he was initially able to put a gap into Jonas, but then ran out of energy and allowed Jonas to come back to him.

    • @leonehardt2378
      @leonehardt2378 Місяць тому +1

      He didn’t run out of energy, he simply wasn’t strong enough to drop Jonas after the initial acceleration

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 Місяць тому +1

      It just seems more that Jonas has a slightly higher base output and Pogacar more explosive one. When Pog made that gap on Joux Plane, he used his explosiveness to do so. However this isn't sustainable long term and once they had to drop back in base pacing that they could keep up longer term, Jonas just was slightly better at that, thus slowly closing the gap on Pog.

    There is something interesting though Team Ineos have 2 of the 3 riders in the race who Pogacar has to mark and instead of doing the usual Ineos thing and just sending a bunch of super-domestiques for the high mountains.
    They are sending: Fillipo Ganna the second best time-trialist in the world.
    Tobias Foss the third best time-trialist in the World.
    Magnus Sheffield the Youth time-trial champion.
    And their two GC contenders Geraint Thomas, Thymen Arensman who are superb time-trialists in there own right.
    This extremely unusual time trial focused team makes me think they are going to attack Pogacar on a flat or medium mountains stage with heavy crosswinds rather than a traditional high mountains stage. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

    • @Fyr35555
      @Fyr35555 Місяць тому

      I think they will maybe try and make stages hard from the start / far out as that is usually where Pogacar has struggled (double Ventoux, 1-2 attacks on Galibier before Granon, Col de la Loze stage where Jumbo paced hard the entire day from the first climbs, Laruns stage where Hindley got into a dangerous breakaway and the pace was high for a lot of the stage.)
      Bearing that in mind, and the fact that with a relatively "weak" team Pogacar might be more easily isolated I would say the most likely stages for Ineos to try and cause an upset would be:
      1.) Stage 15, climbs from near the start including the mortirolo on its easier side from relatively far out.
      2.) Stage 16, climbs from the start and has the Stelvio early on, with all those versatile riders who can climb and are good time trialists they are in a good position in the long valley afterwards if they somehow dropped Pogacar.
      3.) Stage 17, climbs all through the day even if they aren't really long steep and high altitude.
      4.) Stage 20, make it hard from the first ascent of Monte Grappa.
      Realistically though I don't have faith in Ineos to actually do anything as they always seem to fall into old habits regarding their tactics even though they aren't heavy favourites. Crosswinds are a good shout though, they have been good in those historically.

      Because it is easy to analyze in hindsight. At that time not riding after Roglic might have turned out just as catastrophic.
      Yes, Roglic fell early on, but at that moment we didn't know yet if he was able to recover from that or not.
      Yes, he was 2' behind. However if he clawed back one 1-2' that stage, suddenly he's back in contention. And what then if Jumbo tried the same tactics in the next mountain stage? And the one after that?
      Unless Pog knew his team was strong enough to limit Roglic to a small margin (which is difficult since his team was nowhere to be spotted at that moment and team communication probably bad too with the field blown up all over) or he knew Roglic wouldn't recover from his crash, best thing might actually be to just show that this tactic doesn't work, or even to try to outright counter it and see how Roglic and Jonas react to that.
      At that moment in the race, there was no easy choice, every choice hold inherent risk. Was he tactically flawless? No, but that is also extremely difficult to be.

I mean, who needs to worry about pushing themselves too hard in one of the toughest cycling races out there, right? Oh, but let's not forget to remind him to pack his snacks and avoid the dreaded bonk-because we definitely wouldn't want the mighty Pogačar reduced to a hangry mess on the side of the road! And as for Remco Roglič and Jonas, well, let's hope they're healing and practicing for the big showdown at the TDF. He probably doesn't even need to win stage one, just finish ahead of the other GC riders.

    How do you explain Vingegaard dropping Pogacar on Hautacam in 2022? Vingegaard was just better that tour, pogacar was destroyed by the good teamwork of jumbo-visma

    Giro - Pogacar, Tour - Roglic , Vuelta - Vingegaard

      Interesting, rog is my fave but I think he's least likely to get it. What about the triple?

    Noob question: can’t the car just keep reminding him to eat?

      They forget sometime also. Really, I’m not joking. Or they remembered many times but then forgot to say it again at the exact moment when the rider needed to be reminded again. 😂🦋👊🍫🥤🍔

    Why aren't Coke or Snickers sponsoring something?? These brands may not realize how popular they are in cycling.

      No need to sponsor if everyone is using your stuff there for free

      I think Coke has some kind of sponsorship

      Coke does the TdF every year with big time sponsorship. 🤔🦋👊
