  • The aDrums line is the flagship set from the company ATV. At it's price it's directly competing with the TD25KVX and Pearl eMerge, so how does it hold up? Here are my thoughs:
    Cymbals: These are some of the best electronic cymbals you can buy on the market. The sizes are great (14/16/18) and they are incredibly thin. They also have 360 triggering, something that isn't very common in ecymbals. My only complaint is that these cymbals can get small micro-dents. This doesn't affect performance, but Is a bit annoying.
    Drums: Solid sizes once again (18/13/13/10). No hot-spotting in the center of the drums due to the triangle of piezos near the rim edges. The drums also respond very dynamically. Everything has 2ply mesh heads on them, and the the kick especially feels very solid. The only thing I would change is making the floor tom into a 14" shell, and using 3ply mesh heads.
    Module: this is totally optional, you can buy the drumset without the aD5. It sounds great, and has many sample layers, so it's very dynamic. Even so It's my least favorite element of the kit because it only comes with 5 kits, has no faders, and offers no sound editing options.
    Overall, this is a killer kit worth every penny.

    I own a set of these. I have the expanded set with 18" bass, 14" hi hats, 2-16" and 1-18" cymbals, 2-10" mounted toms, 13" floor tom, and 13" snare. I bought the Roland TD-50 upgrade with the digital snare and 18" ride cymbal. I love the kit! I've played live with it 4x now and I'm using it with the Bose L1-1S PA system and they sound like mic'd acoustic drums. I love this kit. I had been using a DTXtreme III special with SD3 software. This kit is way better. the hi hat does make more noise, because of the plastic bottom "cymbal." I bought rubber drum rim silencer and put it around the outside of the bottom cymbal and it works perfectly. The hi hat works by light and the cymbals have to completely close for the brain to proper read the hi hats' movements.

    Apart from the hats and cymbals, can the drums make a sound without the module? I'm asking because they look very much like acoustic drums

    Hands down, ATV was the best electronic drums which was the closest to the sound and feel of acoustic drums that I have ever played. I just wished their module had MIDI in and out ports. The vision of Roland founder and ATV founder Ikutaro Kakehashi was always adavanced in times and ATV drums was one of his final projects. RIP, Mr. Kakehashi.

    Thanks for the detailed review, Justin. I think the ATV pads look and feel great -- I play club-sized acoustic drums, so the transition felt natural. Was the module you tested super slow to respond and load kits? That single drawback kind of eclipsed the whole playing experience for me. I also noticed quite a bit of machine gunning on the preset kits. Maybe it needed a firmware update.

    Hey Justin, great channel! I've owned the ATV aDrums Expanded kit with the aD5 module for about 4 months now and absolutely love it. When I first got it I had to spend some time tweaking the trigger settings, but thankfully that's pretty easy to do. Before buying this kit I'd been gigging with the Roland TD-4KP for about 5 years, so the difference was like night and day. I still keep the 4KP around for gigging purposes, but I no longer take that set out of its carrying case while at home. I guess that leads to the only thing I don't like about the aDrums, but also a reason why I bought them: the size/look. These are a hassle to move around, but that's no surprise; it just pains me having to leave these at home and take the Roland out gigging.
    All in all, it's an amazing set. I'm not sure if it's the drums, the module, or a combination of both, but the dynamic range feels extremely wide. This is the closest an electronic drum package has ever come to replicating the acoustic drum experience, with the notable exception of complaining neighbors. Highly recommended to anyone shopping for a set in this price range!

    I loved my atv expanded set with the pearl mimic pro module. I did a lot of recording with it and had great results (paired with trigger 2.0 and slate digital bundle) I had to sell it last year due to the arrival of my daughter. Now im in the market again after wishing I held onto it. I cant find the full atv kit anywhere. Just bits and pieces on reverb. Thinking of just going with the roland 506 and triggering with s3. Love all your videos Justin. So informative! You're #1 in the edrum world on youtube IMO

    Great review, Justin! I own the ATV aD5 module, 14" hi-hat, 18" ride, and 13" snare. The rest of my e-kit are Roland (KD120, three PD80 toms, PD120 floor tom) and Roland crash cymbals. I'm using a splitter cable from drumsplitters.com so that I can have a third rack tom and a splash (Roland CY-5). Splitter cable is in Aux1 and Aux 2 is my additional crash. While the module comes with 5 stock kits, there are many to download for free, so my module actually has over a dozen kits (one of the DrumTec videos showcases additional free kits, like Dry Oxnard, Pop Life, etc.). Love this kit and it's very easy to use the module with your existing Roland pads, if you wanted. Over the top stellar customer support as well, including phone calls and skype sessions to help you dial stuff in, if needed.

    Very informative like always. Thanks.. I'm always floored by these prices. Idk how any of you afford this kind of gear. I'm 35 and started playing around 10. I'm mainly a guitar player. There has never been a time in all of those years that sum total cost of my gear combined (guitar and drums) has equalled the price of this drum set. Couple thousand on guitar goodies, couple thousand on drum goodies and that's it. It's not like I make minimum wage either. I'm a supervisor for a contractor at the jersey shore. Idk how you guys do it.. I'm not the best at math but I think if this kind of high end gear was cheaper they would move exponentially more units making up for it.

    Hi Justin. So glad you did this review! I’m still a bit confused though on available kits on the aD5. I emailed ATV the link to the DrumTec video 6+ months ago, and they stated all the additional kits featured are available via free download once you register your module. Meaning there are 12 kits total (plus the available sounds for purchase on the ATV site). Wondering if you have to “build” the kits from the available free sounds or ? Ie “Dry Oxnard”, “Unplugged”, “Poplife” etc. ?

    Own ATV set, great set for the price. However wish they used 3ply at least on the bass drum rather then 2ply. I used a wood beater without a bass drum patch and it dented the head on a gig right away.
    Call ATV rep and he told me after the fact that I should have used a plastic beater with a patch instead. I've always used a wood beater with my Roland KD120...never had a problem.

    Hi and thanks for sharing your video.
    You briefly mentioned you like the ATV Kick Drum better than the Roland KD-180. Could you maybe elaborate more on this? I am currently looking to buy a Bass Drum Trigger pad and have narrowed it down to the KD-180 and the ATV Bass Drum. Not being able to test them out prior to purchase leaves me looking for videos such as yours.
    Since they have different technology for their striking head, I was wondering about accuracy of triggering vs feel and playability of both these drums heads.
    Thanks!

    I think the idea of having a module that you can customize is perfect, being able to buy whatever sounds you want and not the ones you don't want or would never use. Every company should be doing this. But I agree that you should also be able to tweak settings, eq, and pitch of drums as well. Seems like they have some good ideas. Wish someone would take the good parts of every drum module and slam them together and make the perfect drum module. And being able to add and remove sounds should be standard. Then they could keep the cost of the unit down, making more money off sound upgrades etc. Hopefully the future brings some more intelligent modules. Most of us buy these things for recording or practice purposes, and the price is hard to justify that. Keeping noise levels down at rehearsal is really important, at least to me and my band members who have experienced the fatiguing effects of loud and beyond loud levels. It's easy for an ignorant person to say..."tell your drummer to be more dynamic, and learn to play quieter"...or..."get a larger practice space!" Yea that's all easy to say....but that's not always the case, nor is it always the answer. And anyone who has ever played before can tell you that. Hey I would love to have our practice sessions be in a perfectly set up large room with the best of the best for equipment and acoustics, but it's just not an option.

  • @GrantEllman

    Would you buy this kit with the aD5 or a Roland TD17 for ~350 less? Are these pads fully compatible with the TD17, especially the hi hat and the 3 zone crashes? From what I've heard, the aD5 sounds better and if I want to tweak my sounds like crazy, I'd just use SD3...

    Can you just strike the side rim piece on the snare to get it to trigger, or do you have to have the stick on the snare drum etc. Thanks Justin!

  • @gregoryfrancis2720
    @gregoryfrancis2720 6 років тому +2

    If they had done a 14" floor tom, then the snare would be 14" too as it saved from tooling another size of the ring mount for the 3 piezo setup. You can expand your set well past the 5 piece mark though as the expansion pack and the floor toms are also available separately. I currently have a 3 up 2 down all ATV setup (adding an expansion pack to the expanded kit adds another 16" crash as well.)
    I don't think ATV is going in quite the right direction with their brains.

    These ATV kits look amazing. Unfortunately I have never had a chance to play the drums in person. I have played the 18” ride cymbal and the 14” hihats and those were great. It is very tough competition between which one is better the Roland 18” USB pad or the ATV offering. With Roland you had to have td-50 module to be capable of using it, now it’s slightly better with Td-27 having digital inputs for half the price of the 50. ATV works with almost all manufacturers with exception of Yamaha. It will work just can not use all 3 zones. I’m torn between which kit I like more the Roland VAD 500 series or The ATV artist kit. Would love to buy this and use with my Strike module and TD-17. The ATV module sounds are good, I just prefer more sound editing options personally. The 17” EFX and China cymbal look superb as well. Disappointing no more American distribution for ATV in USA now. Can still purchase from Drum tec just costs more now and they were not cheap to begin with.

      @@JasonWelchMusic Great choice also. I was considering both. Found a great deal on a aD5 for $600. So there is the fact I got super lucky. Sold TD-17 and upgrade only cost me around $150...

    I have the ATV-EXS 5 kit, and Im having huge problem with doublebass-triggering. I tried to reset the module, doesnt help. Tried also to change sensitivity but nope, still no help. :/ This is so sad

  •  6 років тому +1

    So this Snare pad solved the problem of the hotspot issues?

      yes

    •  6 років тому

      Thanks for the answer, I was in doubt between a 12-inch Roland Pad or a 14-inch Drum-Tec Pro for use with my Pearl Mimic Pro module. I'm going to buy the ATV Snare now!

    I do like this kit, but I still have not seen the E-Kit that I am looking for that is the whole package and reasonably priced. I stay with acoustic until then.

    Gotta respect the man trying to get drumtek views. No sarcasm intended, I think it's good he's getting love from a sponser

      @65Drums  6 років тому +1

      No it's cool man! I actually don't want to be sponsored by a drum company because that would be a conflict of interest :) I'd only be allowed to say the nice things about the drum-sets, and not point out any flaws. One day I hope to get sponsors from non-drum companies to help me do this channel full time :)

    I think they should do it in an oyster wrap. Bebop sizes need a bebop look.

    Hey,
    Does any one know if ATV aDrums is compatible also with the Pearl R.E.D.box module?

  • @jamiesea

    What if you used the Pearl Mimic with this kit. Would the piece of wood still give you a side stick trigger?

    What decent drum module would you buy separately for this kit

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 років тому

      Depends on how much you want to spend. The TD17, Strike, TD30, and Mimic are all good options

    I heard from one other review that the black shells are painted and the wood is birch, not a black wrap so higher quality for sure.
