Somehow, I hadn’t seen this interview until just now. This little bit of conversation is fascinating, and the emotions pouring out of each of them is genuine. There was a 10yr gap between Hendrix & Van Halen. Jimi reinvented the way rock guitar was played. He took old Chuck Berry tunes and updated them. He played Dylan, the Stones, The Beatles in his own style. But he played stock gear. Ed comes along 10yrs later and again, changes the way rock guitar gets played. After many many many years of gathering bits and pieces of information, getting a collection of photographs and stories from first hand accountings, sunset sound studios recounts and photographs, and putting all the information together.... I finally sorted the real truth behind both the guitar and the "amp". I wish I had the platform to give it justice. Eddie in all his brilliance and greatness... haha he lied about everything lol. And I do mean EVERYTHING lol. But every great lie begins in truth. What kinda cracks me up is when you "figure it out" you both realize Eddie's genius and clever ideas combined with intuition and availability of things; and then you realize "oh my lord we are actually just real stupid for a) believing what he said and b) not realizing what was going on in the first place" lol. The amp business is hilarious, clever, and not only simple but SUPER effective. In the corresponding interview in that issue of GW, it's actually said that the opposite is true of the building process. Ed would loan Chip Ellis the real one for extended amounts of time. Tone =/= Output. They can be in part of the description of the other, but I was just referring to the amount of electromagnetic pull the pickup has on the strings. Gibson PAF's were no more than 9k Ohms from the era of the pickup he put in that guitar. BUT... Ed could have put a dozen different pickups in that thing over the years, so who really knows what is or is not "the real pickup". I think that's an impossible answer to a silly question to me.
In my estimate the real reason for the sound is the rewound pick up, th next wood unfinished and most importantly screwing the pick up directly into the body. Amplification helps too.

@emanhacker no man he doesn't those are effects pedal's not distortion pedals, big big difference. Effects pedals cover up the signal from your amp/cab to guitar completely if they're analog, which is what EVH uses. Distortion modifies the sound your amp has to make it sound different and basically changes the signal. If you watch some other videos he'll explain it better than what i can.
@indyracingnut I was confused about this at first because in this video they say he did it without having access to Ed's original guitar, but in the guitar world article on it they said Ed would lend it to Chip whenever he needed it. What happened was that Chip built a prototype from only looking at photos-- THEN after Ed was blown away by it, he gave them the green light and let them use his baby whenever. And why not? Ed made a fortune off of that guitar... again.
