- This curio cabinet had some structurally issues with the legs, but the finish was in great shape! After making the necessary repairs, I refreshed the finish by cleaning with lacquer thinner and then applying gel stain. I sealed everything with Osmo’s polyx for a durable finish. I decided to line the backing with a beautiful wallpaper from Rifle Paper Co. I think it compliments the rich brown of the finish. For a final touch, I pinstriped the door with gold wax for a subtle accent.

So very beautiful! I love the up cycle especially since most old curios are out dated and folks don’t use them much anymore. This may appeal even to the younger buyer! Awesome job❤❤❤
Thank you and yes, it was a younger couple who purchased it.
I really do appreciate your, to the point voice overs and the low soft music is a plus - THANK YOU
It turned out beautifully!!! Keep rocking your craft
Aw, thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it! 🤩
the wallpaper and the added touch of gold striping is aa great complement!!!
Thank you! I agree ☺️
I love this!! I liked the peacock in the middle until the shelves cut his head off? Wallpaper with creatures is so tricky to install so it looks good. The blue paper is absolutely perfect for the cabinet - you did a great job!
Thanks! 😊
The wallpaper really modernized the piece! Just Beautiful!
I thought so too! 🤩
I love the wallpaper so beautiful. You did an amazing job on this piece. 😊
Ah, thank you!
Beautiful! Another older piece reframed to work today. Nice balance of honoring it’s roots and jazzing it up a bit.
Thank you kindly! ☺️
It’s beautiful! I love how meticulous you are with your work. ❤
Thank you so much!
Perfect
Hello. I think it’s beautiful. The good pin stripe around the door brings the cabinet out, as well as the wallpaper. Great job!!🥰🥰🥰
Thanks so much! 😊
I love the gold pinstripe. That was not too thin, but thin enough to not distract from the rest of the piece. I loved the piece with the mirror on top , but also loved it without it. Beautifully done. I have antiques that I inherited that are easily 100+ years old. And are almost black from the oils they used to clean with. I didn’t know what to do and thought I had to completely strip them. But I will try this first. Again…. WELL DONE !!
A lot of antiques have lacquer finishes, so I like to try lacquer thinner to dissolve them before I move on to a stripper. If it works, great. If not, I can use a stripper. I was pleased with how well it worked on this piece. 👌🏼 It also helped that there was no damage to the finish.
Looks amazing, very beautiful with that wallpaper.
Thank you!
Nice job. Adding wallpaper updates the piece. Interesting way to apply the gold line.
Thanks so much! 🤩
Wow. Beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
I just love it! It's perfect! You have good taste! ❤❤❤❤
Aw, thank you! 🫶🤩
Very pretty. You gave this piece a personality of it's own.
Thank you! 😊
You've enhanced an already great piece, its beautiful
Thank you very much!
Very nice job. I love it WITH the pediment and mirror.
Thanks! Yes, it seems about 50/50 with and without the pediment. ☺
This is an excellent job. Well done
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Gorgeous!
Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous I love it
Thanks so much!! 🤩🙌🏼
Beautiful!
Thanks Ann!
Very nice paper..great job!
Aw, thank you! 🤩
I've wallpapers a lot in my 70 years. I would have taken precise measurements and laid out my paper on the floor rather than fight it in that tight space. Great job, it's beautiful!
I would have preferred to take the backing off, but when I tried it wouldn’t budge and I was concerned with using too much force and risk damaging it and/or breaking the glass. 🥴 Not my preferred method, but it worked. 🤷♀️
Lovely!
Thank you!
Lovely job
Thanks so much!
Delightful. It’s the star of the show!
Indeed it is!
Looks great
Thanks!
Beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
I love it all and it turned out beautifully. I love the wallpaper but don’t know about it for a curio cabinet, only because it will overwhelm anything displayed in it. But you did an amazing job on this piece. I was just given my husbands moms curio cabinet, looks almost exactly the same as yours and thankfully is in great condition. I will be applying all the lacquer cleaner and stain you used to clean and refresh it. Buying them now from your amazon storefront.
Yes, I agree, it will need to be a curated collection but I know it will work for someone. Awesome! Good luck on your project!!
@@ivylaneinteriors thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you 🤩
The young folks in New York love buying these pieces! They’re found displayed in warehouses where ppl shop for vintage! At night walking pass those million dollar brownstones with wide tall windows one can see through and those curio cabinets are taller and wider! I’m so glad it was salvaged ❤ Another beautiful wooden piece 😊
I’m glad they are getting appreciation from another generation. They are special pieces 🫶
The amount of work and attention you put into a piece is incredible! love your videos, new sub here!
Aw, thank you and welcome! 🙌🏼
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
Lovely 😊
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful! 🙂

Very pretty - gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
A collection of Wedgewood Blue Jasperware would look stunning in this curio. Well done, you!
Oh my, yes!! 😍
The paper is beautiful.
Thank you!
LOVELY!
Thank you!
Very nice!
Thanks so much! 🤩
I personally like the pediment with it, but you did a beautiful job.
I knew some people would still like it. That’s why I made sure it could still be attached 🙌🏼 Many thanks 😊
I love it. The wallpaper is perfect !
I also like that you kept something of the original patina and finish. I'm looking for ideas to restore / repurpose my Grandmother's china cabinet which has a gold fabric on the back and shelves.
I already removed the base which made it too high. Using that as a hall stand.
Thank you! Good luck on your project 🙌🏼🤩
I love it too ❤
Thank you!
I was a little dubious at first, but once the shelves were back in I think you have a beautiful result.
Thank you! 😊 🫶
It's sooo beautiful! I've learned so much from your channel! What ratio did you use with the gel stain? I plan to do my cabinet it those colors.
Thank you! Well, I didn't mix them. I used Nutmeg on the body and antique walnut on the shelves and door. I didn't realize it until I looked back at the video, but since the color is so close, it all blended nicely. I guess a happy accident? It all depends on the tone of the raw wood. I like Nutmeg for a lighter tone. I used a 50/50 mixture of Nutmeg and Brown Mahogany on a MCM dresser and the mahogany warmed up and deepened the Nutmeg just enough. I really like Antique Walnut, but it is darker on certain woods. Sorry, that's probably way more info than you wanted. 😅
Awesome! I hope no one EVER reattaches that old pediment!
I gave it to the new buyer, but they didn’t plan on using it. 😊
Beautiful 🎉
Hulda, from Puerto Rico 🎉Lots of Blessings
Thank you. 😊
It's so beautiful what I like about old furniture is real wood my husband granny had same thing I wonder where did they take it antic👌🙌❤️💯
Thank you!
Lacquer thinner made that wood so pretty. I was so worried about the curved glass getting accidentally broken since you left it in place. Would it have been hard to remove?
I considered removing it, but it was held on with a thin strip of wood and pin nails. I was concerned that I’d break it if I tried to remove it, so I decided to work around it out of caution ☺️
Very nice, but quick pro tip from a 25-year veteran of restoring antiques for a living... take the back off and lay it down to paper it, it's usually only held on by some small nails or sometimes small screws or staples.. that way is too much struggle with the paper or fabric.
Oh, I know. I usually do and I tried on this one, but it wasn’t budging and I didn’t want to take a chance breaking the glass. 😬
I really like the color of the paper and I have used this color as a backdrop for dark green pottery pieces as this combination compliments each other, but I would have used a paper that had some brown in it as well in order to tie it into the wood tone of the piece. I suppose whatever you will be displaying in the curio can be items that can tie it all together. Just my preference. Great job of cleaning this piece up and restoring its integrity.
Picking the right paper for a piece is hard! I really like all the high end paper, but it's not feasible in a flip. Sometimes I find good ones on eBay or Etsy. Thanks!
Я согласна. Работа хорошая. Обои делают красивую мебель дешевой.
Before I moved from NY I found one of these type curios on the side of the road! Brought it home with the same idea in mind.
However, I let it sit too long in the garage and when we were moving my son broke the glass😩!… needless to say I had to throw it out (it had other repair issues as well)!
Moral of my sharing: Don’t wait and WHAT YOU DID IS ABSOLUTELY LOVELY ♥️!!!
Thank you! I bet that was super disappointing
Love the look, beautiful. Keeping the wood traditional yet adding some bling! Just curious... Wouldn't it have been easier to pop the back off, if possible. I do it all the time. Save times and is more finished. Love your work.
Thanks! Yes, I tried, but it wasn’t budging and I didn’t want to risk breaking the glass. It wasn’t the best method, but it worked. 😅
I've seen that wallpapet elsewhere. I love ir.
It’s SO good!
Great job!! I realize some furniture is too damaged to do anything other than paint, and I'm SO glad you didn't paint this!! I wouldn't have watched all the way through if you did!! It's beautiful!
Oh, it was too lovely to paint! 🤩 Thank you!
Was there a reason you didn't take the back off and paper it? Beautiful results!
I tried to remove the back, but it wasn't budging and I didn't want to risk breaking the glass, so I just awkwardly papered it in place. =)
I need those syringes!!! Trying to find the link.
They are great! The ones I bought are out of stock, but these are similar: amzn.to/43Ttx3V
Have you ever tried fabric instead of wallpaper?
You have to get such satisfaction completing so many lovely projects!
No, I’ve not tried fabric yet. Yes, I do! ☺️
Beautiful wood. Hate the wallpaper in it!
Really?! I love it 🤩
Way too busy. Perhaps subtler wallpaper.
The wallpaper is beautiful. However, I find that an elaborate paper takes away from the treasures displayed in the cabinet,
It would need to be a curated collection for sure, but a collection of ironstone or blue Wedgwood would be fabulous!
Curious did this get sold? Wasnt sure if these would sell for much in todays market
Yes, it sold for $295. It’s not a high profit margin piece. I got it for free, so that helped.
First off, well done !! Question… you didn’t use lacquer thinner on the door like you did the rest of the piece. Why is that ? Did it not have as much gunk build up? Also I didn’t even know using lawyer thinner like that was an option. Did you have to let it dry before sanding? And for how long ?
Yes, a light sand was all the door needed because they just wasn’t as much build up. Yes, I let it dry but I dries very quickly.
Awesome. Thanks. Can’t wait to try it !!!
@@NursingNursing-bs7hb gel stain is magic 🪄
Love the refinish, but I do not understand the blue wallpaper? There is not a single color in it to tie into the wood color
Well, I feel tonal it works. I'm not super matchy matchy. To my eye it blends. ☺
I like the way you 💬 think. The wallpaper is too busy for a classic piece like that IMO.
FYI...The next time you want to put in something that can be removed later use Brown glue it removes much easier than wood glue but, still holds up just fine.
🫡 ☺️
I think she used wallpaper glue 🤔, that's o.k.
It was a beautiful reno of the curio cabinet, everything looked great at the end, but I'm old fashion and do not like the wallpaper being put on that beautiful wood backing. Items displayed will not have the proper impact as the wallpaper will draw the eye to it and not the displayed items.
Yes, some others felt the same way. I designed it so the curio was the star of the show and a carefully curated collection would compliment it. A Wedgwood collection or milk glass or ironstone would be stunning.
Such a pretty piece, but you made the papering more difficult than need be by not have a bigger surface to work on. And not matching the second piece before you installed the first. But that’s just me, you do you. It’s pretty whichever way you do it.
Oh gosh, I know! I tried to take the back off, but it was so delicate I didn’t want to risk jarring it and breaking the glass. I do sometimes make things more difficult for myself. 🤣
I wouldn’t have glued the trim piece down if someone is going to try to remove it. You could have just tacked or pinned it down.
Either way would work 👍
❤️
Thank you!
The power of paper
Indeed! 🤩
If wood glue doesn't work try liquid nails. I have had great success doing wood repairs with it
Ah, I haven’t tried liquid nails 🙌🏼
Sorry but I liked the furniture colour timber. Look rather than covering it up .😮😊
Well, at least I didn’t paint it. 🤣
I’m glad you didn’t paint it. It looks beautiful.
Me too! Whew…😅what a great way to use it!
Thank you! 🤩
@@ivylaneinteriors ❤
Pretty cabinet but, the paper is too busy for the piece.
Oh gosh, I don’t think so, but I’m more of a color and pattern person ☺️
L I K E 👍👍👍👍👍 💯 ❣💯❣💯 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks!! 🤩
Omg the paper just ruined it
Hmm, you think so? I loved it 🤷♀️
"Ruined" may be hard. Perhaps subtler paper would have made a bigger impact.
Nah. Unless your entire collection of knick-knacks is white, blue, blue and white, or crystal/glass, anything you put in there is going to clash and compete with the wallpaper. The other issue I have is whichever room this piece is in, you're stuck with that color scheme. The pattern is too big for the cabinet and overwhelms it. Personally, I would prefer a smaller scale and more neutral pattern and color combo. Maybe very narrow stripes in creme, beige, light brown. Or possibly a brocade look with the background and pattern inthe same neutral shade. However, the workmanship is meticulous and well done, just not my style.
Sounds like you have some great design ideas. You should refinish one too!
@@ivylaneinteriors Had I your talent, I'd give it a go.
I agree the wallpaper distracts from the beautiful cabinet. It looks gaudy, something I would have seen in my Grandma’s day.
@@georgiannwilloughby5783 yes, others thought the same thing 🤷♀️
In my opinion the wallpaper ruined this makeover; it’s too busy. The size of the illustrations vs the size of cabinet is much too large, takes attention away from the beautiful cabinet and the items inside. Enjoy watching your videos to see what you’ll do next.
Some others felt the same way. 🙌🏼 I love it!! But I also envisioned a specific type of collection like ironstone or blue Wedgwood to coordinate with the cabinet.
A curio cabinet is intended to be a display case. By adding the wall paper you made the cabinet the center of attention instead of the items placed there to be displayed. Nice job, but it defeats the whole purpose of the piece.
Oh, I don’t know. I think this makes the cabinet the star and a curated collection can compliment it and add beauty to a space. To each their own though ☺️
Did you pay for the cabinet? Did you buy the materials? It's easy for us to sit in our living rooms and tell ourselves what we would do different. It's another thing to publically voice mean words.
Beautiful, beautiful work.
@@kitfranzman4860that wasn’t mean, it was an opinion. I’d look to your comment as the mean one…
I disagree. The entire purpose of a curio cabinet is to say ….take a closer look at me over here. The good and interesting stuff is in here. Bling deserves bling. It is not like this was a dining room buffet. The only function of a curio is to draw attention.
Ruined it with the cheap wallpaper and removing the pediment.
Oh gosh, well, it wasn’t cheap wallpaper and the pediment can easily be reattached. I mentioned that in the video. My client actually liked it without the pediment, but to each their own. 🤷♀️
Wallpaper paste and wallpaper. It’s out so much that it looks bad, it’s the destruction. Guess I should stop looking into future.
@@tinaranson6172 I guess you didn’t like it. 🤣 That’s okay. The new owners loved it and differences of opinion is makes the world go round.
@@ivylaneinteriors I agree. I liked it. It’s way better than paint. . I’m a worrier as if I’m going to have to remove that paste and paper and refinish some day. Bad experiences affect my impressions. It’s not a reflection on you. I hope you know that. 😊
@@tinaranson6172 Gotcha!

Couldn't even watch the rest of the video once I saw that HORRIBLE wallpaper! 😵😵🤦😵😵

I kindly disagree. This was an unwanted cabinet and now it’s a statement piece. A carefully curated collection will compliment the piece and make it a showstopper in a space. A collection of white ironstone, or glassware, or blue Wedgwood china would be stunning.
Посуда потеряется на этом фоне🤷♀️
