In traditional lore once you touch/mount (to ride them as they appear as a horse) a kelpie you are unable to let go and are stuck to them. So he is bamboozled that you are able to escape.

I'm impressed with the audio, was listening with headphones myself. At times it sounds like the Kelpie is shifting from one side to the other, as you hear him in your left ear mainly but occasionally hear him in the right alongside the water ambience shifting directions in response to the movement as well. Very immersive I must say.
So apparently according to other comments, in mythology once you hold a kelpie you can’t let go, and I’m assuming the listener had let go to grab their gloves in the later half, which is also why he asks for the listeners hand?

Yep, he was sus as hell since the beginning. If it was real, a person would have been super alert. Everything seems like a weird flirting (borderline dangerous), but what crosses the line is that "...while you wait for an unsuspecting fish to take the bait". I would have been like "this guy wants to seriously try something on me.
This video had me curious on how it would be smart to survive the encounter [ it would probably help to have a good sense for danger ] but based on a quick read apparently holy metals would do the trick. Silver is a blessing [ quite literally ] for mythical creatures.
