Release Reels did a name change, announced at ICAST 2015. A new star drag model was also introduced to complement their Small and Large lever drag reels and star drag Surf piece.
Heard from one of our clients and visitors to our UA-cam Channel. He mentioned that the SM (surf) model reel does not have a reel clamp or make use of a dog in addition to the AR bearing. Good point, and apologies if I missed mentioning those points.
We, Salty Daze Fishing Team, got to use them prefishing for the 2015 SKA Nationals and loved them. We are looking to add them into our line up for our 2016 SKA season. Great video, very informative.
The reason they don't spin great out of the box is putting a life time warranty on a reel means you better pack the hell out of the bearings or you will be doing a lot of warranty work. They seem like a really well made piece hope they expand there line more.
Sort of thinking either new AVET SX G2 MC for the casting capability , wonder if the truth reels could be customized with mag cast control from the factory? That would change my mind.
No factory mod available. But, a tinkerer could make one. There's an article in our Fisherman's Journal section describing how to add a mag cast to an Avet reel prior to the factory offering that option. It's doable on just about any reel, but really beyond my own skill set.
I thought about trying this when i first heard about it but ended up not doing it. I was thinking that if that magnet ever came loose during a cast, it would completly trash the inside of the spool, the plastic gear there, and maybe other things. Have you heard of this happening?
Just have my Seigler SS Sideplate replaced with SS Sideplate Bespoke Custom SuperMag from PMR....cant wait to test it.....looks sick & cast like crazy..
Having been accustom to heavy Penn Spinning Reels and "Star Drag" systems on bait casting reels , am I going to have difficulty learning the new "lever system" of drag ??? And did I hear you right you MUST be in "Free Spool" only to adjust the drag ???? What if the fish is tougher that you thought and you want to "tighten" the drag ......... You have to put it BACK in free spool ????? I must have understood this wrong ???
Then you simply move the lever from strike to full (or forward as required). Typically you do not adjust the drag, you set the drag correctly on the front side, then allow it do it's part to tire the fish. What I was trying to convey is that you DO NOT adjust the preset knob (that's what's used to set the drag to 25-30% of the line test measured with the lever in the strike position) unless the lever is in the freespool position. You don't adjust the preset once it's been set, you simply move the lever - and that can be done at any time during a fight.
Don't you think the SS star drag know should have a clicker? Or am I the only one..... the size of those hex screws should make other reel makers very envious
The Small Star (SS) does indeed have a clicker! Other manufacturers should be looking over their shoulders. The Truth guys have been doing a great job, production quality has really come a long way over the past several years we've been associated with the firm.
I recently tested the Accurate Fury 400 and the Avet SX 5.3 and when in full drag I noticed the Fury was noticeably smoother. Any knowledge on how the SG might compare to those reels in that sense? Also any advice on spooling up the SG with 65lb power pro? Line capacity? Max it at 50lb? Or ok to try it?? Thanks for the help
+Anthony Ko Reels should be fished at strike, not full. By moving the lever to that position you are putting more pressure on the spool's bearing than you probably should be doing - not for extended use. Fish at strike. By the comparison you mention, the SG will also be similar to the Avet in my estimation. The Accurate has more drag to begin with, will have greater range of use prior to issues of side load pressure - but it too will experience side load issues, just at a higher drag level. You can put any line on the reel you choose, the drag capability will remain the same, have the same limitations. The SG makes most sense with 50# braid by my thinking, capacity about 300 yds.
Im in so cal and I am torn between this reel and an Avet jx 6/3, I know that the 2 speed can come in handy, but the drag on this reel is way better. For the most part I would be fishing small-medium sized tuna and yellowtai on , at most 3 day trips. In theory (drag and line capacity) this reel seems like it would work fine, and it is cheaper than the Avet jx, but I just dont know if there are any serious up or downsides to either of these reels. Any input would be awesome.
+Jack Dickerson Not an easy call. The JX 6/3 MC is one of my favorite reels - own two of 'em and have taken some very good fish, over 100#, with them. Different animals. The SG's and LG's seem to be getting much better with each production. Very nice pieces and the guys who have purchased them love 'em. For most of what we do here the SG would cover the bases. However, if you tangle with the larger fish over say 50# the ability to downshift is a big advantage in my estimation. Much depends upon your skill level and ability to make good use of the rod in the old pump and wind routine.
They sold me an SG a few years back and it worked wonders on Lil schooling tuna. I also bought a metaloid and it exploded. Wish I could trade the other okuma for one of these. Longest trip I have been on has been 2.5. This reel smoked everything from little tuna and yellows to dodos, even used it deep lake trolling. You can do a lot with it. I mean it wasn't the easiest reel while fighting tuna but it feels rock solid and makes you feel like a bad ass because of the cool looks and most people never heard of them and you will get a lot of complements on it. No slop whatsoever in the handle. Good for bottom fishing too. I mean I never fished for huge grouper of larger tuna, but you already know that its not for the big boys.

Wish they had done a better search for potential conflict before use of the new tame (Truth). That's especially so after the last name change. Hopefully they did their homework with use of the owner/designer's last name. Now known as Seigler Reels...

+Nelson Flores My understanding is that they made a subtle improvement on the anti-reverse. The strike position is the main enhancement from what I can see on the new versions. With the drag numbers, I think the owner of the company decided it best to be conservative. While the prior models, and probably also the new ones, can do higher levels of drag in reality to do so creates more binding so it's not really useful. Drag levels are very much appropriate for the intended line classes being fished on the respective reel sizes.
+the fruit hunter I say that because that's what we see in spooling. Truth will revise their specs. Diameters vary between venders, types of braid used, number of strands, hollow verses "solid." The more conservative numbers of 30 yds of 50# braid is more accurate.

Quality of the fibers, strength of the line more important to me than simply diameter. And, a manufacturers diameter on one test may be less than other companies, but for another test greater in diameter than other lines. It's a question of the fibers used. All good braids which are 100% PE/Dymara/SPectra will show a lower diameter than those with other fibers used. Also, a hollow core braid will pack better and allow for more yardage than a "solid" even with the same stated diameters. Further, just because a manufacturer claims a certain diameter it does not mean that's what's on the spool. Suppliers can change and specs may not reflect that change. One of our clients went through that disappointment with Momoi recently. If you are only looking at say 50# braid, then I might say Izorline offers the skinniest product, but its a 3 strand line I believe, and that's not as nice a product to work with as an 8 strand or hollow 12 or 16 strand. Plus or minus 30 yards on a 300 yard spool up simply isn't a major concern for me personally.

on the site it says the sg holds 500 yards of 50lb braid. why do you say only 300 to 400 yards?
