A review of the STACER Outlaw 429 after 18 months

- This gives some reasons as to why I selected the STACER Outlaw 429, some issues I faced, and how I have it set up. I fish mainly in estuaries for flathead, whiting, and bream.
Thanks mate for putting this together - alas not too many videos still about the Stacer ranges. Hope you're well.
Nice review, always good to see real / honest owner reviews highlighting both good and bad points about a boat
Thanks Greg. Glad you liked it.
Thx for the video, Iam 65 and about to buy my first boat (very similar to yours but Quintrex), you have given me inspiration as I also am "a fossil". So pleased to hear you have no issue launching etc as this was abit of a concern for me. Thx again!
Bryce you should have no problem. I am heading towards 77. As you most probably know the Quintrex and Stace come from the same factory. I suspect you are looking at the very popular Renegade.
Iam looking at the Topender 430 pro, great package and within my price range. Looking foward to more videos.
Thanks for the review,am 68 and upgrading my boat for the same reasons as yourself.Looked at the same boat but didn’t have a supplier close so went with a quintrex explorer trophy with the same outboard locally. The sad part is not available until February March due to lack of aluminium in Australia.Enjoying following your videos.
Thanks Neil. A friend has the Explorer Trophy and is very happy with it. The Quintrex Renegade is the equivalent to the Outlaw. However, talking to someone only yesterday they felt the Quiny was too expensive compared to Outlaw. Shame you don't have a local dealer. Both out of the same stable though. Bit of a bummer re delivery time.
Nice honest review, well done. I bought the Renegade, it's interesting to see differences between our rigs. Mine has the tackle box locker in the rear casting deck. My console looks the same as yours, but I enclosed the large hole in the front and put my rod holder across it and works well. I also fitted led lighting all around the underside of the console, and its fantastic at night.
Thanks bruno2. As mentioned in the review the display boat I looked at had the tackle box locker as well as a continuous rear casting deck. Neither were there on the delivered boat without warning. Considered installing rod holders but don't like rods standing upright. Just a personal preference.
Good onya a great and honest review for anyone looking at this type of boat. Well done
Thanks Darren. Pleased that you enjoyed it.
Good and honest review.
Oxidisation is nothing new to aluminum boats and its why i wouldnt pay for a painted hull.
If the Stacer's ride is good, the ride of the Quintrex equivalent is far superior in a chop due to its "blade hull" I think Stacer have address this with the new Revolution hull so if anyone is looking at these on the second hand market not which one you are looking at.
These are great boats and I own a larger 460. Easily the best tin boat I have ever had.
Thanks Raymond. From another post here I believe that the Outlaw and Renegade now have the same hull.
Excellent thanks 😊
Thanks mate. Good video. Good information
Well good video and good and bad points about the boat
great video and very detailed..... love the fishing vids also.... keep them coming
Thanks for the feedback John. Hope to produce more.
Great review. I’ve just become your 500th subscriber. 🎉
Good honest review cheers mate
Just found your channel.Excellent review mate.I have a quinny estuary angler and the main reason I went unpainted is easy maintenance and NO paint issues.Painted does look nice for a little while though.😉
Hi Fabian. You are right - paint does look good. But protecting it can be a real chore. The boat ramp I use has a pontoon with the pilons coming up on one side. These pilons are protected by wire cages (is suspect to stop feet slipping through the opening) that come right to the edge of the pontoon. Unless you have a small tinny your paint work runs down the side of these. So painted boats are reluctant to use this side. Got to wonder some times.
Great review….. a lot of help as looking for a fishing platform boat…
Thanks Mark. Good luck with your search.
Fantastic boat. Thanks for sharing.
Well done Fossil, great review
Thanks. Hope you got something out of it.
Very good review my friend. Nice details and thorough look around. Well done. 😄👍
Thanks CT

Sweet boat! I have the newer model with the Revo hull. The gunnels are not painted and that is a nice touch which helps with the paint peeling. Overall I am very happy with the boat. I agree that the Minn Kota is money well spent too. Cheers for your review!
Did you request not to paint the gunnels. If not, then it is interesting that they are no longer painting the gunnels. After every trip I pressure wash the hull so there is no way that salt water is causing this.
@@bobrobinson8544 Yeah just come that way now.
@@bobrobinson8544 I have the renegade 420. I like your layout better with the battery in the floor and large kill box up front. The paint is peeling much worse than yours due to oxidation. Purchased second hand for a great price, so can't complain. If buying new I think I'd go bare unpainted aluminium all over.
Great review. Thanks mate.
It's sad seeing that corrosion, I've had my Allycraft Top ender since 2003 and it has little corrosion after all that time.
I'm now looking at a side console Crossfire for the same reason as you had so will expect same paint issues.
Cheers for the video
You will enjoy the upgrade. I suspect that this corrosion is really caused by electrolysis which can result through earthing to the hull. More often this is via mounting the outboard to the hull.
Opt for fully welded gunnels...
Every painted boat I have ever owned has had this type of corrosion even after all the washers checked and replaced with nylon and anti corrosion product. Doesn’t effect the seaworthiness of the boat though. Just give it a touch up every now and then.
I have resigned myself to having to live with this along the lines you described.
@@bobrobinson8544 me too.
Have one.. love it
Still enjoying mine. Will be out again this weekend.
Fantastic review. Have liked and subscribed.
Thanks ARD4
Good review mate 👍
Thanks Geoff.
great video mate! I've got one coming at the end of next month. Upgraded from a f400 explorer
You should not regret the change. That little change in size is really noticeable.
Great bud, thanks very much. You said you have a breaker trailer….any idea of the combined weight as I drive a small Jimny.
Thx
Greg
Well I would call that false advertising/fraud. You were shown a bigger boat plated for 5ppl and you got a smaller/lighter boat plated for 4ppl. You park that boat beside the older hull you were shown and its a big difference. Stacer/Quintrex dealers are using the old photos of the bigger/original 429 and showing internal shots of the new 420....
This is purely cost cutting and ease of manufacturing using the 440 casting decks in the 420 with the older 419 outlaw hull. Soon as I pointed this out you get blocked or deleted
The change to the casting deck was government enforced as splashwell needed to be bigger. I think you’ll find your model also took a reduction in carrying capacity to 4 from 5
Thanks for your feedback Liam. Was not aware of the reason for splashwell size change. Dealer advised me of reduction in carrying capacity was due to my requesting a 50L under floor fuel tank. I have since found out that this is not the reason.
It's a smaller boat, I reckon he should sue them for false advertising/fraud....
80% of dealers use the old external photo of the bigger older 429 and show internal shots of the newer smaller 429/420.... Which was a 419 outlaw which got discontinued...
Great vid thanks, its a shame you were unable to purchase the 420 Renegade as its a much softer drier and more stable hull than that model, I've had both, but yes they put a dollar figure on it that most cant afford especially at our age, happy fishing!!!
Thanks Ty. I almost settled on the Renegade. I saw them both at one of the Outdoor Shows. Both were on display. One of the things that swung me to the Stacer was the satisfaction I had with the Proline Angler 399 that I previously owned. Great boat.
Since 2018 the outlaw has the same hull as the renegade blade hull
@@reelmm3311 Interesting to know. Thanks
Thanks for the honest, down to earth review! What a diference to listen to you, or a boatdealer?
Nice mate 👌👍
Pleased you enjoyed.
Hi mate, nice review. I just bought a 420 Renegade SC - wondering what shaft length you have for your trolling motor?
55hp. From top of motor to head 1480mm
Hey I just watched this and I have the same boat but there's little differences I'm not sure why. I had the same surprise as you, the rear hatch was missing even tho when I ordered the boat it was there, I was disappointed too. The other odd thing is that I don't have a rear hatch in the floor for the battery, instead it's under the bigger splash well and I have to reach it by taking the portable fuel tank out and twisting my body upside down to reach it.... 😟
I don't have the underfloor tank, I wanted it but $2400 extra is a lot..
Overall I like the boat but I'm paranoid about the paint bubbles, I read in the manual to expect them too.
I like how comfortable these boats are, I used to break my spine in a heavy fiberglass boat but these seem to fly over choppy waters.
I've been using Meguiar's waterless car wash and wax all over the hull and it seems to have helped the paint so far.
I wish Yamaha had something like vessel view, I do like my Yamaha but I've had to spend more to be able to see information about the motor.
I don't use the live bait well either but I'm thinking of filling it with ice and putting beer in it and then the ice will drain itself 👍
As you have noticed the hull really cuts through the chop. My previous boat would have bounced across it. Still a very comfortable boat to fish from. Something I failed to mention in my review is the trailer wheels locking up when parked for a few days. Can take some effort to get them rolling, then all OK. At times I have to hitch up to free them. Have started to spray lanolin on them as I suspect that the problem is rust.
When you said it's hard to throw the leg over you were talking about your boat weren't you ! Lol
Nice review mate. Ive just sold my Quinnie 475 SC and am now considering one of these. On my Quinnie I had to raise the console and controls around 75mm so I could stand up while underway. Im around 6ft tall. Are you able to stand comfortably while underway with your standard setup or you have to remain seated?
I am about 5'10.5", so about one and half inches shorter. i only stand up when I am navigating through weed or narrow channel. Quite often do this standing beside console. Not a problem for me. If on the plane moving to a new spot, then I sit down for no reason than comfort.
Good review mate. Any tips on installing the minnkota to the bow plate? I've got an almost identical Quintrex Top Ender and just bought a Motorguide. Not sure I'm going to fit all four screws of the quick release to the bloody plate. Not much room under there. Cheers.
Thanks FF. I had to fiddle with the fitting of the quick release plate. As you say, not much room under there. Telwater obviously don't look at these plates when they design the fit the mount plate. The other thing to watch when drilling your holes it that the plate allows for a lock to be fitted. On the Minnkota if it is too far from the edge then a lock can't be fitted.
Great review ol boy. How long is the electric motor shaft? 54 inch? And is that good enough? Thanks in advance
Thanks MM. The shaft is 54". I have it fully extended all the time and it performs well. On the odd occasion that it bottoms (
I have just bought a 2nd Hand version of this Boat - it's great and handles rough water well - want to fit a Minn Kota Terrova but am worried how to set up the electrics - can you point me in the right direction please
Just about everyone will have a take on this. This is what I did. Started with installing a 110Ah deep cycle battery. Once on site I only use the electric and it can be running continuously for over six hours with no problem. I installed it under the left side front hatch. My model has a flat carpeted floor under front hatches which made this easy. Obviously don't know about your purchase. I also fitted a waterproof breaker under the same hatch. Can't remember which gauge wire I used. However your dealer should be able to help here. On the deck front wall to the left of the anchor well I fitted an Anderson plug. So wiring goes from Anderson plug, through wall, down to breaker then on to battery. Hope this helps. For the compass I fed power from the crank battery. This is because I installed a buss bar under the console to support a number of other devices. I mentioned this in my review.
Great videos, I've put a deposit on 429 side console because of your videos. Have you had any trouble with electrolysis/did the battery come earthed to the hull as stacer tends to do? Made any changes to the wiring if so? Cheers
Hi Tom. Replied to this earlier today but God only knows where it went. Not sure I want to be responsible for your boat selection. Re electrolysis - you are going to go nuts over this topic. Have a read of at least the first two pages of this forum discussion. www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/showthread.php/207486-New-Boat-Grounding-Question. My battery is directly earthed to the metal isolation switch mounting bracket.. The electrolysis shown in my video does not appear to be getting any worse. I have added some other electrical devices. I installed a buss bar under the console and directly connected the positive and negative runs to the battery via another isolation switch. All devises connect to buss bar. Hope this helps.
@@fishingwiththefossil.6199 Thanks mate. Very helpful. It's a complicated topic (electrolysis on stacer) and so far I've heard of people not worrying about it and keeping wiring as is from factory, and others believing its a problem and rewiring etc, so hard to know who to believe on the topic/whether I need to rewire or just leave it as it is from the factory
Is the livewell divider a DIY job? If so how did you make it??
Hi Corey. The divider came with the livewell. There is a groove for it to slide into. I remove it when I am fishing. If I was doing comp then it may be of use.
Awesome review mate looking at an outlaw myself, how does it handle chop for the size?
Thanks. Compared to the Proline Angler this boat rides beautifully. Cuts through the chop easily. Very stable. I don't go outside as I don't handle it well. However the river and lake here can get quite lumpy and the Outlaw is quite comfortable in these conditions.
Very informative review. How do you clean the carpeted floor? And what size car motor pulls your boat and trailer? Do you know the combo weight of boat, outboard and trailer?
Thanks Jazzy. Have not cleaned this one yet. Vacuum it on a regular basis. Mainly for fishing line off cuts and crumbs from lunch. My previous Stacer had carpet and when needed cleaning would empty the lockers, park on sloping driveway with bung out, then hit with the Karcher. Always did a good job.
@@bobrobinson8544 Thanks for that. I checked out one of your other vids which showed you doing a fine job with your Karcher and it also shows the size of your car. I hire boats at the moment and don’t have to clean or tow but would like to buy a boat like the 429 Outlaw
@@jazzycool2950 Thanks for the feedback. The car is a Mazda cx5 and does a good job of towing this boat. If I was going to be doing real long trips then I might get something with a better towing capacity for no other reason than fuel consumption. Whilst the Outlaw was purchased new my previous boat was a trade-in purchased from a dealer. Turned out to be a good buy.
@@bobrobinson8544 I have a 2Litre SUV and travel 1 hour to the water. Do you think I could tow an Outlaw 429 no trouble?
@@jazzycool2950 You will need to look at your car specification. The CX-5 is 2.5L witha towing rating of 1800Kg for a braked trailer. I have the aluminum I frame trailer which is braked. Don't know what you you are considering. The 2.5L petrol engine tows fine. Have done just under an hour travelling at 110kph.
Nice walkthrough. What length shaft are you running on the Minn Kota?
Thanks Corey. I believe shaft length is measured from base of the head to top of motor. In this case I have 54".
Thanks for the review Fossil, with the 54" shaft is it long enough to cope with swell, I have the same boat and living in Perth we mostly have an angry sea there, also i see this video is 2 years old now, have you made any additional changes since ?@@fishingwiththefossil.6199
You should have just got a boat catch, they're about $400. Probably would have negated the leg breaker walk way down the trailer chassis
I thought about it Nathan. I am not able to sink the trailer enough to drive up on to it. If I still had the prado I might have considered it.
Try and swap your stain, ess screws out on the console for ally rivets or you will have bubbling paint like my boat has done
Thanks Theo, though too late.
@@fishingwiththefossil.6199 dam I try to keep the least amount of stainless in the boat
Virtually identical to the 420 renegade sc , with a few little differences ! Otherwise same boat same factory of origin !
Right on Duaine. I think you will find that Telwater push out three lables.
@@bobrobinson8544 4 actually Quintrex , Stacer , Savage & Yellowfin plate boats all great boats mate ! I myself have fhe 420 Renegade SC !
@@wolfysgibbo Wasn't aware of Yellowfin. In fact, never heard of it.
The older 429 outlaw's are a bigger boat and plated for 5ppl not 4. I hate how dealers show the old hull but show the internals of the new one. Typical slippery salesman....
@@wolfysgibbo The new stacer 429 and quintrex 420 are the same but older ones were almost a 440. Like I said slimey salesman. The new 429/420 were called a stacer 419 outlaw TS
