(Edit) Check out our new Shovel Knight: King of Cards review here: - ua-cam.com/video/bhvyjoA-dlk/v-deo.html Hi guys! Question. How MANY games have you got on your Switch now? Welcome back to another SwitchUpdate style video. This time looking at ARPG games on Switch. The definition had changed a by from when we were kids but what are your favourites. Also that Moonlighter background music! On point! Mark and Glen
Oh boi I love waaaaay to many to pick a favorite. There are elements of each that shine on their own and make me love each of them for different reasons.
14 Physical, about 50 digital. Don't ask me how long I've had my Switch. I'm serious. Stop staring at me. Alright, August. The answer is August. Happy?
That Moonlighter music immediately made me feel welcome and comfortable settling into this video.. Ahhh new SwitchUp content, like a warm blanket on a rainy day. I've enjoyed quite a few of these games especially Bastion, Dragons Dogma, Moonlighter, BotW and what I consider the pinnacle of the genre (and honestly the best all around game I've ever played) Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. This game, it's lore, the environments, the witty yet grounded dialogue and the incredibly addictive game within a game GWENT have captured my heart in a way that very few games have before.
Skyrim is definitely my favorite ARPG on the switch. That game is so deep. Exploration is the key factor for me. Learning about the world and its characters through playing and not being fed the story through cutscenes.
Skyrim just never gets tiring to me. I enjoyed Skyrim even more on my second go on the Switch. Encountered all sorts of things I didn't know were even in the game!
Skyrim is about as deep as a puddle. Potentially one of the most overrated games ever. It’s literally push a button to fast travel to location, hit enemies through linear dungeon/area, collect item, fast travel back, rinse and repeat. Completely mindless
I love the way your channel keeps growing and evolving, and I'm go stoked to be along for the ride. Keep grinding and you'll be at the top before you know it!
Well this makes me realise how grateful I am for the Switch. My first game on it was BOTW I loved the scope and how it did make you feel like you could do anything in this big world. Xenoblade 2 had characters and a world I could truly get lost in, one of my favourite games and stories of all time. Moonlighter made me appreciate how great indie games can be. Was also great to replay Dragons Dogma in handheld whenever I wanted!! In terms of games from the list I want to play, will definitely pick up Ys VIII next time it's on sale and Torchlight 2 will surely scratch my Diablo itch at half the price
The last few season I have been there helping Jace and his wife powerlevel our characters to 70 and get those season set piece gifts. Also three shots at the Goblin Amiibo really helps pad the bank account to buy more stash and gem upgrades!
I really enjoyed this video. Here's a few more that I'd add to your list of ARPGs.. • Skyrim • Dragon Quest Builders 2 • DC Universe Online • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 • Hob • Mages of Mystralia • Nine Parchments • Rad • Victor Vran Qualities that make up an ARPG for me would be, leveling up. Whether it be cosmetics, abilities and/or combat. Whether it be through story choices, looting, action or in-game vendors, I want to feel more powerful and very different than how I began the game. Looting is a close second. If anything, that throws me off more than not, because I try to break things in games and get disappointed when I can't. It created "expectations" in what I thought an ARPG should have. Sidenote, it doesn't help that my brain sees an isometric game and assumes instantly it's an ARPG.. that I must buy it!
playing witcher 3 all week, currently at the dlcs. it runs better on my switch handheld than on my standard ps4, prefer switch version 100% thank you guys for innovating the videos, not doing the usual "top 10 rpg" and so on. because of you guys (I believe it was one of you two) I played raging loop and absolutely loved it. thank you for the content!
Great video guys, I would add Skyrim to the list...i've finished it many times, but now i'm 30hrs into the switch playthrough...cracking fun and still finding new stuff to do
My heart still stays with Dragon's Dogma. To this day, bar Dragon Age: Inquisition and probably Dark Souls, nothing has topped it. Really wish they'd make a sequel. You guys keep doing your great content, really wish this channel had more popularity because it sure deserves it! Cheers!
You sparked my interest in Quest Hunters. might pick it up on sale to play local co-op with my son. On my favorites and when I (finally) catch up with my back log I will give it a go
Honestly when I first left the cave in the BOTW I had the biggest butterflies in my stomach. It just made me appreciate Nintendo for all of their work.
Haha shout out twice in one video (for better or worse!) Yes, far far too many hours on D3 for me, but it is still the top dog in my eyes for loot-based old school ARPG's. A couple of other ARPG shoutouts: Super Cane Magic Zero is extremely quirky but a ton of fun with a rewarding combat system, and Tales of Vesperia I'll throw in there along the same lines as Ys VIII. In terms of the actual definition of ARPG though, I think I'd align more with Glen's views and things like Ys VIII, Xenoblade, and Zelda wouldn't quite fit in. However, I see the argument the other way and it's definitely a more interesting category and list when more broadly defined. Great video guys!
Great list! Im not really that much into rpgs but Im really looking forward to buying cat quest 2 as soon as I can afford it. Broke rn, bought to many switch games haha Edit: I actually also like Quest Hunters, looks intersting :)
I've got 10 out of 15 of the titles on this list, you could say that makes me a fan of the genre. According to the hours logged my fave is Diablo then Zelda BOTW, then Y's8, just started Dragons Dogma, Children Of Morta (can't stop gushing about this one). I haven't played Switcher 3 or Titan quest (yet). As for how many Switch games 85
Awesome list guys! If y'all had done a top 16 I would add hyper light drifter to the list for sure. A super stylized Zelda-like game. Don't know if it's truly an ARPG, but like y'all have said the term is pretty inclusive.
BOTW is a funny game for me; first time I played it, I played it as a Zelda game...and was actually a bit disappointed. It's just not a Zelda game. Second time I played it I went into it knowing what to expect and was totally floored. It's a different game, and one of the few actually deserving of its accolades. Stellar. For myself, I typically call it an action RPG if the combat is based on direct actions rather than taking turns. Though games like Fallout and Skyrim make life difficult, as technically you control your characters actions--but everything is based on behind the scenes numbers. Also, no love for Mana? :P

It's DS Remastered. It's a shit show compared to the original. Sure, it looks fancy, but it's got all the bugs and issues the original had, without the modding to fix it
@@pidgy8927 there's no bugs on the switch version. played it in full, word for word. think they patched up so I didn't encounter any throughout my first and 2nd play through
Ys Origin. Fun. It is fun. Something so many games forget to be. Bosses. Amazing bosses. Some of the most fun hack and slash. Even grinding is fun. Amazing sound track. Stories enjoyable. Graphics are great. Very old style but very fitting with the other aspects of the game. No plodding. No wandering between levels, just straight up the tower. Simple menu's. 2 simple pages. No mind boggling piles of lists. Fairly priced. Tight controls. It's just bloody great.
I dont know why anyone would play that over the good ARPGs on console nowadays, the only reason this was so succesful was because the PS2 and Xbox were really starving for a good diablo clone. I enjoyed it too for couch co-op, but it was no Diablo 2. Anything that came after it and is available now on Switch is better, such as Titan Quest.
I have many of these, but am glad to discover new ones thanks to your list. I find that despite putting in 5-10 hours in each game, I always inevitably come back to Diablo 3 and have over 345 hours on the Switch. The seasons are a fresh start every couple of months and keep the game alive with updated mechanics, loot rewards and sometimes even very minor dlc (like when they introduced a new dungeon for Greed). Overall though, all of these games are great 👍🏼 and thanks for the vid!
Last weekend, a friend of mine stayed for a visit at my home. I introduced him to your channel by showing him your review of Children of Morta. His reaction was him ranting at me, because he had to get the game, after watching the video. ^^ How convenient we share accounts on each other's Switches. lol He liked your channel as much as I do BTW. I bet he already subscribed or will do soon. I bought Titan Quest for 12€ as retail. A lucky find I guess. 😁 Great video as always. 👍
I've been trying for years now to find a game that makes me feel the way I did when I was 12, playing Diablo II on LAN with my best friend. As part of my quest, I've tried Sacred, Titan Quest, Torchlight II, Path of Exile, and Diablo III, but nothing quite hits the spot.
There won’t be anything like it, friend. Because it is a part of our childhood times with friends what we feel. No game itself can resurrect or call such emotions once more.
@@romanpozler4024 while nostalgia does play a big role in it, I feel that there are at least two areas where I find myself most dissatisfied, music and challenge. When it comes to music, many video games have moved towards a more ambient style. Like makeup, the point of it is to not notice that it's even there. As for challenge, I wonder how much came from the game designers versus how much challenge I created for myself by not taking the time/not being old enough to make a proper build.
I love the reverse cover of YS VIII. It's so beautiful . Better than the original cover imo . Awesome list guys! I'm gonna say the one action role playing game we need is on the switch is Kingdoms of Amular. Sadly EA doesn't like the Switch as they have publishing rights to it.
My favorite action RPG is probably Zelda BOTW, it's actually been the #1 title holder ever since for the past almost 3 years! I could live on an Island with the games on this list...for at least a year, I mean come on i need Zelda BOTW 2 and Metroid Prime 4
I just discovered your channel and love it. Regarding Diablo III and Torchlight 2 on the Switch my favourite is Torchlight 2. As my top ARPG on PC was Diablo II. Nowadays I play Path Of Exile on the same platform the most followed by Torchlight 2 on Switch and PC. Keep on uploading those great videos. Greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪
is the titan quest the HD version that is on steam? I have it already, but might get it again for switch. also that game grim dawn is essentially a sequel to titan quest, at least mechanically.
I really wished that diablo 3 was more like diablo 2 gameplay a hud but they went a totally different direction. D3 is still good, but D2 will always be my favorite out of the series!
@@SwitchUpYt not really ARPG's but I have to give a shout out to R.A.D (more rogue like), and Implosion (it's pretty good for a mobile game, plays well, runs well, upgrades etc. Choice of playing for hours or minutes)
Played and absolutely loved Torchlight 2 on PC. So glad to see it port to Switch. I imagine it would be fantastic as a game when you're travelling or moving place to place :D To the question you asked - when Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 came out on PC and had the crappy money auction house, etc etc, I much preferred Torchlight 2, and lets not forget the awesome Path of Exile - Hopefully Blizzard will bring me back with Diablo 4.
My favorite its not ARPG but RPG is For The King again really recommend for who love challenge and hard game With the consequences of every movement Set really Deserve more Attention 👌 guys BTW great list here i have Some of the most here thanks for great video keep it up 👍
I too have For The King and would both recommend it and say stay the hell away from it! You really do need to calculate every move and even then the RNG will screw you anyway! I will admit it has been very fun, but if you do decide to pick it up (pretty sure its on Steam too), definitely realize that you are going to die and die often. The game actually tells you this every time you turn it on; it is a bit of a shock the first time you play, to be honest. I've played probably 10-12 hours on the game and have had to restart 5-7 times on game overs. Its a bit of a rogue-lite in that you can purchase characters/items/locations to be used in the game to help you on the next go round, but those don't go into the inventory/map automatically. You have to actively search them out to receive them in game. TLDR: Great game, just don't think you're any good at it.
So I am a big Legend of Heroes fan and I enjoy a lot of arpgs too, but haven't played any Ys games. Should I grab one, and if so, where to start? I have all handheld consoles.
If we're putting The Witcher 3 in there then for me it goes at number one. Then Diablo III then Titan Quest. They all have fantastic replayability and interesting stories.
I like the guys from Switch watch...there pretty cool Dudes...but on Juan’s latest review of king of cards he forgot to mention the game is free to people who bought and own Shovel knight treasure trove...I’m only mentioning it as I noticed Glen was playing it earlier...very important info😎👍
The topic after my own heart. Let’s get lost in the amazing genre. All of these are great. Not to kill the buzz of switch, but Titan Quest is $8.99 on PlayStation next work right now and Walmart has physical switch for $19.99 USD.
@@AdamsBrew78 yes it is the base game. I don't enjoy iOS gaming. I am glad there are more options for people who enjoy gaming on their phones and such. I have to dedicate my phone for work reasons and my gaming is done on my switch/ps4 only.
My fav outta the bunch is Diablo3. I purposely got the switch for that game. I wish they would remaster Diablo1+2 and release that has a physical collection on the switch like how other companies are doing with the Crpgs like baldur gate and NeverWinter Nights
I tempted to get Xenoblade Chronicles 2 eventually. I haven't played much since I'm busy with the holiday. I want to get back to try and finish Trials of Mana and Pokémon Sword before I get more games. Any games you still haven't but wanted to beat?
Best ARPG has to go to Smash Bros Ultimate. I play the role of the Doctor, and I'm constantly facing impossible patients. Actually I'd say Dark Souls is my favorite, but Witcher 3 probably deserves the title of "the best on switch". Perhaps I can find much to love in the new Star Ocean coming up. I grew up loving The Second Story on PS2.
I took awhile to join the Switch club I've been a PSP and PS Vita user for years still am. That said I LOVE my Switch Light but only with a grip cause imho it fails for comfort. I think the Vita is more of a true handheld device esp since it's 11 years old and still looks freaking cool. I'm playing Dragons dogma at the moment for the third time LOL. I might get Y's viii but I have it on my Vita so 🤷 ... I dunno. I also love that I can Play so many awesome ports like Darksiders, Bioshock , Borderlands....the list goes on . The Switch is amazing I can't wait to see what Nintendo does next.
SwitchUp been thinking this video over. A chick of these games I count as action adventure games. Someone actually implement the role play part. A great example of Dragon’s Dogma fits the arpg title. You pick the role/character you want to play on an action style game. Neverwinter Nights, Baulder’s Gate, Titan Quest, Diablo are all great examples on this list.

Have the same but for me it was with the Dungeon Siege games
There won’t be anything like it, friend. Because it is a part of our childhood times with friends what we feel. No game itself can resurrect or call such emotions once more.
These are memories yes, but try out Grim Dawn just to finish up on your Diablo-clone experience.
Maybe Path of Exile if it ever released on the switch
I love the reverse cover of YS VIII. It's so beautiful . Better than the original cover imo . Awesome list guys! I'm gonna say the one action role playing game we need is on the switch is Kingdoms of Amular. Sadly EA doesn't like the Switch as they have publishing rights to it.
Yes! Moonlighter music!! Nice one guys
Love that soundtrack! Mark
Is Quest Hunter available in the USA at any capacity? I cant seem to find it on the Nintendo shop or Amazon
I'd recommend Rad as well. The mutation system and the 80's aesthetic bring something new to this worn out genre.
Thats more of a roguelite. No?
That’s great to hear! Thanks for watching my friend! Mark
Have u tried grim dawn? (from the makers of titan quest) My most loved arpg after diablo 2!
John Kon Grim Dawn is the one I forgot. It’s also an awesome game.
Happy New Year and best wishes for 2020!
@@LemmyCaution66 thx mate! best wishes for you too!
Great video, I would personally add Dark Souls and Skyrim to the list, but other than that I agree with all the selections on here
I heard the Dark Souls port is kind of poor
No it's great. Audio is just a touch lower sample but it's fine. Mark
Awesome video!! All games are a must lmao!!
Excellent stuff! Mark
Ys VIII is phenomenal! What a fantastic game. We really need Ys 1.!
Great list and great video.
According to me Diablo is THE best arpg om console period.
I have way to much time spent in this game.
is the titan quest the HD version that is on steam? I have it already, but might get it again for switch. also that game grim dawn is essentially a sequel to titan quest, at least mechanically.
Tales of Vesperia you’re welcome
Quest hunters looks pretty cool...I reckon Kirsteen would enjoy playing this game with me😎👍
Best Arpg of all time have to be diablo 2!
Agree
@@SwitchUpYt and best alternative to diablo 2 is grim dawn in my opinion!
@@johnkon292I love Grimdawn, Still waiting for Switch
I really wished that diablo 3 was more like diablo 2 gameplay a hud but they went a totally different direction. D3 is still good, but D2 will always be my favorite out of the series!
I'd be keen to understand why you chose Torchlight 2 over similar titles like pillars of eternity or Divinity 2? What made that top of your list?
Divinity 2 is very much a turn based CRPG. It's an incredible game and will make our pure RPG list for sure. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt great work guys, keep it up!
Pillars of Eternity is very nice, but its not an ARPG either.
Trials of mana is out now!
Noob question here: when they say "local" does it mean it's playable with 2 joycons/controllers and doesn't need another switch for the other player?
Yep
@@joaoalipiocorrea8113 thanks!
Now I need to get my Xmas jumper on too! I thought it was too early to start wearing it !
I like the bg music it's from moonlighter
Me too it’s great bg music.
Waaaaaaaaaay. Faces for the voices.
Btw ARPG's are 100% my fav genre. I really don't get on with turnbased/JRPG's
There we are! Mark
@@SwitchUpYt not really ARPG's but I have to give a shout out to R.A.D (more rogue like), and Implosion (it's pretty good for a mobile game, plays well, runs well, upgrades etc. Choice of playing for hours or minutes)
Xenoblade chronicles 2 is definitely a jrpg. Don't understand why they put it on this list so be careful with that one.
Played and absolutely loved Torchlight 2 on PC. So glad to see it port to Switch. I imagine it would be fantastic as a game when you're travelling
or moving place to place :D To the question you asked - when Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 came out on PC and had the crappy money auction house, etc etc, I
much preferred Torchlight 2, and lets not forget the awesome Path of Exile - Hopefully Blizzard will bring me back with Diablo 4.
My favorite its not ARPG but RPG is For The King again really recommend for who love challenge and hard game With the consequences of every movement Set really Deserve more Attention 👌 guys
BTW great list here i have Some of the most here thanks for great video keep it up 👍
Thanks brother, always great to see you! Mark
Great stuff! Mark
Hehehe Glen would never miss that bro but thank you. Mark
The topic after my own heart. Let’s get lost in the amazing genre. All of these are great. Not to kill the buzz of switch, but Titan Quest is $8.99 on PlayStation next work right now and Walmart has physical switch for $19.99 USD.
It’s 18 bucks for Titan Quest and all the expansions on iOS. Definitely a better deal than Switch version, which I think is just the base game?
@@AdamsBrew78 yes it is the base game. I don't enjoy iOS gaming. I am glad there are more options for people who enjoy gaming on their phones and such. I have to dedicate my phone for work reasons and my gaming is done on my switch/ps4 only.
Nice to see Dragon Dogma is worth mentioning to this day
Also can you guys name your Top 10 Horror games on the Switch?
We have a top horror games list mate. Here it is:
ua-cam.com/video/T6Vipei02PA/v-deo.html
@@SwitchUpYt Thanks didnt notice that you made one
I would add KoA for sure, that game is epic :D
Titan Quest looks like Runescape. I like the look of the inventory system.
Awesome. You both are gr8
So are you! Mark
Having your pet bring your loot back to town is a classic Monster Hunter mechanic.
My favourite genre and favourite platform that compliments it surprisingly well.
That's very cool. What's your favourite one? Mark
@@SwitchUpYt I think I'd have to go with Diablo 3, always been a favourite of mine.
Hehehe yeah The Witcher is the best everything. Heck even the best horse racing game. Mark
All of these games just make me want to play all day. I own a good chick of this list lol!
Good stuff mate, they're all life eaters. Mark
Anyone know why Quest Hunter disappeared from Switch catalogue?
All of these are egh except for DD and Witcher which I have already
Diablo 3 while good on switch is a far cry from the best ARPG, though it likely is the best on switch
