"I'm not worried about death because I'm not even gonna be there when it happens." -- somebody else
Man I love this comment, do you realized you just said something quite interesting?
Yes High five to ya
Epicurus said that
How do you know?
To me, enlightenment is just learning how to accept life as it is. And I agree that it is more important to just contemplate "What is this?" than to ponder what happens after death. (We really won't know until we die.) Anyway, great video Brad.
Thanks!
Zazen is enlightenment.
Because it’s unavoidable; demonstrated by the original question itself. Or to quote Dogen “To seek to know ourself is the inevitable will of the living.” Bizarre world indeed!
What I got from Sit Down and Shut Up (my favorite of yours) was that sitting Zazen gives us the opportunity to "examine" this world, our lives, personal problems or whatever data we have to work with, and hopefully that gives us a firm grip on reality. At least if we seek something like "truth". That I think then leads to the general state of an "enlightened" person like Tim (I'm guessing, don't know him), the idea of well, this is how things are, what's a good way to respond? Can I change this, do I need to try? Certainly it doesn't make a person "all knowing" (the are unanswerable questions and lots of missing data), nor does it necessarily make her "happier" (the state of the world isn't pretty) but it helps in terms of distinguishing between what we can or can't do about things. Even that helps with one's general attitude. Perhaps that's it, Zen is about attitude adjustment.
I liked your comment. :) I've thought along those lines many times. I've also sometimes thought about my opinion (like yours) that "the state of the world isn't pretty", and how that makes me unhappy (usually the unhappiness is actually anger and disgust). But there's this other idea in my head competing with that: This is reality, it is the way it is, how can that be "wrong"? I think the thing that makes me unhappy is that I want it to be different than it is, and that puts me in conflict with reality, and I'm never going to win that one! I'm also part of reality though, and I have a nature that thinks things should be a certain way, and I have some (pretty small) ability to affect reality. I think I'd be happiest if I could just make the small changes that I'm able to make toward the things that suit me the best, and accept the rest without thinking that it's wrong or bad. (Like you said, I think it's about attitude adjustment.)
If only I could be the way I think I should be...? I guess I'll get there, or I won't. :)
For me it shows a whole new potential for the human species. I've met people that don't function by the prompts of condition and it has helped me see the world a alotta bit different. In my view, enlightment is about realizing that there are all these dances and games going on around us, we become aware of our participation in the games we play. We become aware of our own awareness and how IT interacts with IT.
Blessings . 🌷🌷🌷
Thanks Brad
Great comment!
we do live in a profound mystery!
I think most people forget that, our mentors are still on the path. They’re still human. They’re still striving towards something better. Some mentors will fake being the “perfect”/ “ideal” individual. But that is almost always an act or fantasy (as Brad points out), when someone presents themselves as the ideal mentor. Essentially most of us, especially those of us who were raised with other beliefs, decide that this particular path is just the best one for us. If someone feels mediation or Buddhism isn’t for them then that’s fine. As for happiness, I think it is some sort of American standpoint that the goal is to be perpetually happy, lol. Most Buddhist don’t express perpetual happiness as the goal. Detachment isn’t perpetual happiness. As for what happens after death the other main whole goal of Buddhism is to get away from that, lol.
Hi Hardcore Zen, your video title made me think of this song by Eric Andersen, released in 1965 - I may watch your video later, but so far thanks for the question which triggered my memory which enhanced my mood...
Bumblebee - by Eric Andersen 1968
Oh why does the bumblebee fly ?
Oh why oh why do people die ?
Why’s the wind flying so high ?
Oh why, oh why, oh why ?
Oh see the grass and the great green tree
They are so pretty, I believe
Grass has roots...wind is free
And that’s the way things are.
Oh see the water run from the mountains so high
It flows in the land, then runs dry
Comes from the rain all in the sky
Oh why, oh why, oh why?
I know a place where the cannonballs roll
And they hurt your body and they hurt your soul
Aren’t even worth a pound of coal
‘Cause that’s the way things are.
Oh why oh why does the bumblebee fly ?
Oh why oh why do people die ?
Why is the wind blowin’ so high ?
Oh why, oh why, oh why ?
Oh now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
We are all God’s little sheep
And that’s the way things are.
Oh see the colt and the old gray mare
Like a babe she loves for its care
She can hear, see and care
And that’s the way things are.
Oh children there is a game called ‘war’
It’s a game that knows no rules or law
Child is killed against the wall
And nobody even cares at all.
Oh why does one man love
and why does one man hate ?
Why do we learn too late
Oh why, oh why, oh why ?
Oh here is a dollar bill in my hand
It’s made of paper, nothing more
Funny how it makes people come to your door
And that’s the way things are.
Oh where has the brown thrush gone
And why can’t we hear his song ?
What’s the difference of right from wrong
Oh why, oh why, oh why ?
Oh why does the bumblebee fly ?
Oh why, oh why, do people die ?
Why is the wind blowin’ so high ?

Cool t-shirt! :)
A life dedicated to practice, with no guarantee of results ...a mind boggling concept....
But the practice itself is the result
I am very boggled!
I don't think anyone really wants to strive for enlightenment (or wants enlightenment) but, some are drawn mysteriously, or mundanely to know "what is" or 'know reality directly" it's worth exploring and that requires no extra notion, or agenda. In fact, all the stories are a big obstacle, as it appears.
Poor Ziggy.
I thought the whole point was the liberation of all sentient beings! wish these weird mindless elite would consider that! :p
Agree but actually the elites are causing suffering by trying to escape suffering. But we actually do the same with our material pleasures too. The technology, tvs, computers ect are manufactured in other countries by unfair labor standards, child labor, slave wages ect.

returning circles
pick up when you come around again
So what is the answer that you get through an enlightenment experience?
Yes!
Time to do the dishes and stop sitting around.
There are many reveleations/insights/inspirations (I do not like using answer, because there is no question.), but you rarely will learn how to chuck wood and carry water. ^^ Also having an experience doesn't really make one an enlightened master or something. Experiences are cool, but not really necessary. ^^
Idk
2:24 Did you mean "Safety Not Guaranteed"?
I think so!
THAT was a great movie. There is a German film called Enlightenment Guaranteed (ua-cam.com/video/6fXi4lOJe1I/v-deo.html). I think I mixed up the two titles.
Hardcore Zen thanks!
