  • I love The Weeknd but sadly I Don’t Love Dawn FM. It’s kind of nuts that I, Mintrom Movies don’t adore a new The Weeknd album and yet this is my Dawn FM review. In this The Weeknd Video Essay I go in-depth on my problems with the album and most of its songs. It’s not all bad though, whilst Take My Breath didn’t leave me breathless, Sacrifice is an absolute banger. If you’ve read this far into the description, thank you and I hope you enjoyed Dawn FM more than I did…

For me, Dawn FM is so much different than his other albums. Not only sonically is it brighter, but it’s lyrically coming from a different standpoint than usual for him. Until I Bleed Out killed the old Weeknd character that we all know and love and now he’s in purgatory rethinking his life. Not only that, but I think it also represents a shift in content. Instead of being the one directly hurting people, he’s the one being hurt by someone who lives the same lifestyle that he tried to escape from. It’s a genius album that I really wish you could connect with
Also Less Than Zero absolutely wipes the crap out of Save Your Tears, both songs are good but Less Than Zero is not only an amazing outro, but so emotional and just embodies Abel letting go. It made me cry on first listen

I felt cold about this album at first, but it grew on me a lot the more I listened to it,. I can't say right now that this is better than After Hours, but I will say that this is a great compliment to it. It paints Abel as someone who for first time in his life, looks in himself to find things to be happy about and get past his regrets. It is a big risk for Abel to switch to more upbeat, hopeful music after his legend being built on some of the darkest and toxic music we've heard in R&B and pop. IMO, I think it works. I can understand people not loving or outright hating it, though, because it's a massive switch in tone.

I think Dawn FM is more of an 'album' than After Hours. AH was, narratively, a perfect album, but you can still pick basically any song off it and just listen to that one song. Whereas Dawn FM, the songs are way more interconnected. The run from "A Tale by Quincy" to "Is There Someone Else?" is basically a perfect medley of four songs, similar to the way Echoes of Silence did "Montreal" all the way to "Initiation"
With "Gasoline", it's kinda like "Heartless" to me, where he explains that he's living this fast, degenerative lifestyle, but doesn't really offer an opinion on it. He's numb to it after living it for so long. Whereas "Less Than Zero" is him acknowledging that the way he's lived has made the girl hate him, perceiving him as less than zero, despite trying her hardest to reach him. The fact he's accepted that explains "Phantom Regret", where Carrey says that he has to find peace in himself before he can truly be 'at peace'.
After Hours never struck me as "purgatory" or a cycle. You could perceive it as a cycle with how it ends and begins, but I always felt that "Until I Bleed Out" was him saying that nobody would ever be as good as the girl he was with, and that he still can't get her out of his head, to the point he doesn't even want to get high anymore. The bonus tracks add so much to the narrative as far as I see, with the run from "Nothing Compares", him saying that they're both empty and that he won't be able to find someone like her, and "Missed You" showing his regret for ruining the relationship, and "Final Lullaby" being him taking the first step to trying to move on by closing the book on the relationship, "putting it to sleep" in other words.
You could argue this makes Dawn FM a retread, but I think it's only partially that, and adds to the heaven/purgatory/hell theme, since you could see it as events of his life flashing before his eyes as he dies (though I think the purgatory theme of the album is more metaphorical, and about the miserable funk you're in after you end a relationship, in between living in the past and moving forward)

I definitely see where you’re coming from, but I think the way I see After Hours and Dawn FM are two sides of a 3-sided coin. It really does feel like the 3rd part of this “trilogy” will put this album into perspective. After Hours was all of the mistakes leading into death and Dawn FM is reliving those past traumas over and over again until you find a way to forgive yourself and cope. I agree that some of the songs are more bare-bones in terms of structure, but I can’t deny that they’re almost perfect pop songs, which aids in the repeatable nature of the album. All in all, I really love this album, I’d say it’s on-par with After Hours but I can see why others wouldn’t see it that way :)

Interesting! I thought this was his most interesting and most ambitious album so far and that he did completely re-invent himself! But very subtly. The cover art says it all. It's a mindblowing concept album about the fear of growing old alone and dying alone. It doesn't seem like it on the surface, but it's his most mature album yet. The difference between all the songs here and After Hours is that here, he's accepted his fate that he may be alone and unloved forever. After Hours was him trying to process that grief, but never truly accepting it. Out of Time is accepting the inevitability of falling out of love. Best Friends is accepting the inevitability that he's going to hurt women and lose all his most intimate sexual relationships at some point. He's accepting of his partner's decision to leave him on Less Than Zero and is thanking her for trying her best to love him, even though he knows nobody will stick around with him for very long - the synthpop tone of the song makes it sound like he's now mature enough to be grateful and happy to have had that fleeting love anyways, even though he's sad to lose it. He sounds tired and consigned on Here We Go Again, even though it's his biggest flex yet - you can hear him rolling his eyes just through the title. In some ways the first half of the album seems to be one final escapist fantasy he's indulging in before he starts a new chapter in his life - a new dawn. While the second half of the album (after Jim Carrey informs us that we have 30 more mins of easy listening ahead) is an increasingly more serious reflection on love and growing old. You're 100% right that it's a transitional album like MDM! This album is really far ahead of its time thematically and a beautiful capstone for the post-Starboy Abel before he moves on to something new

I also think this album is a transition to the last one of the trilogy, which is what he announced on social medias. For me, this album is made to be listened to in one go, he really focused on the auditive experience, to create a specific atmosphere/timeline and he succeded.
His interpretation of the songs is so emotional, he shows the versatility of his vocals (and he always does amazing vocal ad-lib), and that in spite of the verse being rather short..
I love Dawn FM, the lyrics evoke the themes of After Hours, but with more maturity, which actually made me love After Hours even more, because we can see the evolution of the character of the Weeknd.

Big oof, some solid points but a lot of the criticisms sound like you heard the album maybe one time. The songs and skits definitely feel connected and the production is top notch on Dawn FM. Not necessarily as “experimental” as After Hours was but captured the essence of the songs, era, and sounded like a perfect blend of that 80’s theme with modern Weeknd. It also really seemed like Abel channeled his inner Michael Jackson for this album.

For me the retreading of the heartbreak he's going through isn't something that takes away from the originality of the album. It's presented with far more heartfelt regret than previous projects. Like how on after hours his struggles are recognized but are overall ignored resulting in tragedy. So reflecting on the relationships that he's lost through this remorseful lens was necessary for the whole "purgatory" aspect of the album and the completion of his transformation.
    So basically, album cool

He said, that he don't do another Kissland and can't ever make it, because he made Kissland in his darkest times, when he really felt bad.
You have your point, but album absolutely slaps, I think it was third Weeknds most ambitious cinematic album, besides Kissland and After Hours, as an album with full songs it is majestically flawless. Yeah sure, it didn't lead on hype it gave us, but still I can't say "it was bad album", in my top Weeknd's albums it is placed at third, it is better than MDM, BBTM, Starboy and Trilogy (it just trilogy was combined with three mixtapes, that has no connect to eachother.), and it was really interesting, unique concept and experience I've had in a while. At first I felt it was not as good as previous work done, but the truth is not until u keep listening to it over and over will u get to appreciate how much of a genius Abel is and how great Dawn Fm actually is. I think my biggest problem with Dawn FM is that even though it's an album about purgatory (which is an awesome concept in itself), I guess I expected more of an introspective album. Sure, the subject matter bounces between all things from past Weeknd albums, but I actually felt like After Hours was more of an all encompassing project. It referenced past songs more, and it felt much more vulnerable than Dawn FM. There's literally a Trilogy song called Till Dawn, which (from what I've gathered) was not referenced on this album. Meanwhile After Hours had nods to Heaven or Las Vegas and brought back the heartbroken drug talk in an organic way. Here it doesn't seem like he's saying anything we didn't already know about him

Okay I'll be one of the few people to agree with you in this instance. Even more than the songs not fitting the theme too well, it doesn't feel like a massive amount of work went into the melodies or song structure on this album. The only songs that are interesting in that regard are take my breath extended and...i am already struggling to think of another. One of my favorite aspects of the songs he crafted is that he was willing to give the song time to get started and would be unconventional with his instrumentation and structure. The only new song that does that for me is gasoline, and it's on in instrumentation. That is the reason why I love kissland so much, and why I find this album to be his worst. I rarely found the melodies in the verses to be interesting, and I also agree with the song never evolving or changing much once it gets started. Even in terms of bridging to the final Chorus, I never felt there was much effort except on take my breath to build to a climactic ending. I think starry eyes would have been amazing if it was 4 minutes and took more time to climax. Best friends is nice to me but it doesn't change much at all once it starts. For whatever reason, maybe because it gives me Taylor swift vibes, but I dont like less than zero in the slightest, I can't even say that it's bad or anything, just that acoustic guitar weeknd outro sent me too far. I think a similar guitar outro works on birds part 1 because it is more unexpected and it's not an unfiltered chord strumming guitar. Finally the lyrics do not do it for me. Gasoline has good lyrics, so does take my breath, but most of the songs just aren't that interesting in that regard. I probably feel this way because of how interesting the concept is, but it never seemed like the songs were connected as he mentions in the video. It almost felt like he made the songs and was trying to figure out what to do with them so he made said they were to guide you from life to death. To me it doesn't feel like any off the songs make sense in that regard, even if I think some of the Jim carey stuff was cool. Final final thing, wtf was with Every Angel is Terrifying, it almost had immediately the most interesting production on the album, and then he rips it away, instead of taking the time to flesh it out and make it insane.

according to abel, it's good to put yourself in the shoes of someone going through purgatory (maybe put yourself in the shoes of the weeknd from last album, a regret stricken man), stuck in traffic, and they have a radio station (dawn fm) to sort of guide you through purgatory. The songs aren't meant to say a beginning to end stories, it's more about regret, which is why at the end, jim says we have to find peace within ourselves to be in heaven, something OUR character hasn't yet therefore it's the 2nd album out of the three that makes up a new trilogy. maybe it will all be in a perfect loop in the third album. as of now, i still love the experience of dawn fm more than i did after hours. though, i do think after hours has a great overall arc, and story in general.

Everyone has their own opinions. I love the album. If I ranked the albums, this would probably be number 3, between Beauty Behind The Madness (2) and Starboy (4). But I also have some problems with it.
Not all of them, but the interludes and features aren't that great. Again, not all of them r like this. Jim Carrey as the radio host was amazing, and the Quincy Jones interlude has grown on me. But I wish Tyler and Lil Wayne were replaced by some other features. I could see Bryson Tiller on "Here We Go... Again" and Dua Lipa or Charlie Puth on "I Heard You're Married". Maybe even a "Take My Breath" remix like Jon Denton once said. As for the interludes, like I said, the Quincy Jones one grew on me, but at first I didn't see the point in it. Then there's the intro and outro, which to me don't count as interludes, and r actually great. "Dawn FM" Intro is okay, but "Phantom Regret" is beautiful. But then there's "Every Angel Is Terrifying". This is now my least fav Weeknd song ever. It's not bad, it's still a 6/10, but it feels like a troll song. But not troll like Kanye West's "Lift Yourself". Some people say it's a tease to his next album, which people r calling "Afterlife". Yes, Abel did say this is another Trilogy, but why would he announce his next album so early, when this one just came out. However, there r a lot of highlights. While I agree "Less Than Zero" sounds like a "Save Your Tears" ripoff, which copies other artists doing the exact same thing like Post Malone with "Circles" or The Jonas Brothers with "Leave Before You Love Me", I still liked the song. Also, I can't listen to "Save Your Tears" for personal reasons. And "Is There Someone Else" is right now my favorite song ever at the moment. The album was also missing the song the song from the "After Hours Till Dawn" trailer snippet. The one that goes "You know I love it when you're angry".

I’m hoping the one from the After Hours til Dawn video will on Afterlife and will be the style and sound he’s going for with it. I think it’s time for a more experimental sounding project and hearing him tackle more of an Arca x FKA Twigs x Beach House style sound with unique electronic influences with a synth element mixed with Dream pop would be a really interesting direction for him to take

I personally think after hours was way better... Dont get me wrong, dawn FM was great, but something so personal about after hours was so appealing, the beauty in pain was so mesmerizing in After hours, and I honestly related to a lot of it personally, dawn fm felt more of a 3rd person stroy, while After hours was a first person perspective.
Both are great at story telling, the jumping back and forth between feelings in dawn fm felt so chaotic yet organized, but after hours is just... Better.

Although, after my first whole listen, it really felt like a transition into the next album like what you said at the end of your video

You articulated exactly how I mainly felt about the entire album. The subject matter for the DAMN FM was such a let down.
I literally felt that his ego & his inability to grow out of that playboy stage is what made the album so...mundane.
I think the reason for he "playboy-esque" songs is b/c he doesn't want to lose that part of his listeners that listened to him solely b/c of that toxic content in the first place. It's a shame that the people pleasing aspect of his writing & career is stunting his growth in his music and possibly his personal life. And given that (as a fan), I have felt like Iv'e been on this journey with him & I feel like he's hit a plateau, so it's sad to see him kind of settle for toxicity when I feel like a part of him truly wants to grow from that....

Even though I am late to give a proper opinion on the album under this video, I wanted to emphasize that I have such weird feeling about this album it's interesting. Dawn FM is the exact opposite of what I wanted from the project. Almost the whole year of 2021 was just the hype for next The Weeknd album. The year of 2021 was the year I actually became a really big fan of Abel. After hearing Blinding Lights and seeing the official music video for it, I knew that Abel was something bigger and more interesting than an lifeless pop artist. I will never forget that amazing experience of quietly listening to After Hours from start to finish thorugh my phone's speaker late evening trying not to make my parents wake up. Even though I technically didn't hear the whole production of the album I heard very well that it sounded nothing like the music I listened to before. Expecially after digging into the dark lyrics of each song, After Hours became the project that I could heavily relate to, fighting demons in me and escaping what I never think I would embrace. After hearing his whole discography (which is a whole different story I have for each project) and me being amazed of how many genres each album Abel embraces, I couldn't be more than beyond excited for the next project. I remember reading an article where Abel stated that the next project is going to be somewhat sad and dark, reflecting on the problems of the world and being inspired by many of events that happened during 2020. I have to be honest with you, an album like this was something I really needed. Starting from the year 2020 I was experiencing not only changes in my mind and body, but also in the World. The weight of everything that was happening in and around me had an extremely big impact on how I was thinking about the World and no music could make me relate to this sad feeling which makes you concerned about our society. I remember hearing a snippet which is called "Under The Sun" and it continues to be my favorite snippet of The Weeknd to this day, I really hope it will be on Afterlife.
And so, after constantly experiencing changes in my body and mind, it was finally cutting close to the date of 7th of January - the release of Dawn FM. We got what we got in the end. I understood what the album is going to sound like from the beginning of How Do I Make You Love Me. Objectively speaking, the project was decent: we were gifted with the songs like Sacrifice, Out Of Time, Is There Someone Else and Here We Go Again, but this is just a pop album of (how I understood the project) the main character somewhat understanding what is wrong with him (portrayed in the very last song which is "Phantom Regret") and eventually escaping the darkness. We got songs that describe the same character Abel has been embracing, as you stated in the video.
I waited so long and got nothing like what I was waiting for, but... This project still has a beautiful charm in it, honestly. The whole roll-out of it, the aethetics and music videos mixed with the complex state of what I was going through, Dawn FM became an album I come back to with a smile on my face, just like all other Abel's projects. The album came literally a year ago and I think about it as something which came out 3 years ago.
    I love Dawm FM.

You said and articulated everything I, myself have been thinking and wanted to write down. While most want or do think of DAWN as part 2 of a so-called trilogy, it still has to stand on its own. I grew through my 20's in the 1980's so I appreciate Abel's take and continuation of the vibe. He likes it and I like that he does. I have listened to most of the tracks through UA-cam. Some I couldn't get all the way through cuz, like you stated, it's mostly the chorus over n over again. When there are lyrics, they are past lyrics only reworded or just simplistic in nature. Gasoline is Depeche Mode in sound! That's cool! Less Than Zero is SYT, but not as good(IMO). Do streaming numbers make an artist? Make them iconic? Legend? No. It takes a full body of work that can assemble the cultures together in appreciation. Inspires love for the Arts through their message. Where AH was more organic in its sound, Abel more vivid in raw emotion, I feel DAWN is more of the same. Only shalacked with some 80's good time vibes. Hiding the sorrow beneath the surface. AH 2.0! I thank you, sir! For your "unbiased" and honest critique.

  • @lelidawi2446
    @lelidawi2446 2 роки тому +3

FINALLY someone who agrees with me! I thought I was crazy! I would add that not only are the lyrics in the choruses repetetive, but the MELODY/BEAT in the choruses are also extremelly repetetive - with I heard you're married, How do I make you love me, Don't break my heart, and even Sacrifice - being prime examples of this. I feel like it's just two chords over and over and over again with very repetetive bland singing too and almost a non melody too it.
However, my problem with the album is mainly the production, and I disagree with you about the lyrics. Yes, the choruses have repetetive lyrics at times, but so did the songs on you're favorite album Starboy ("This ain't ordinary life" x1000 "FALSE ALAAURM" x1000 "I feel it cuumming" x1000 "I'm a motherflippin Starboy" x1000). I still think the album had a very unique idea with clear themes and a pretty noticable character development. I think the whole retrospection thing and brutal clarity/honesty with himself and the women in his life is different from his other albums. I don't see how you could compare Best friends to Often. Often didn't even seem to be about any sort of relationship to me, there's an orgy going on in the video, it's just about fucking while numb. Best friends on the other hand is about a complicated kinda sorta relationship or maybe two people who broke up where she wants him back, but he just wants to be friends, but he still wants to f*ck her, but he also knows that he will just break her heart again and they will be in that circle forever so he has to hold back. Often has way more simple lyrics. Buuut on the other hand Often has a way cooler beat. The production on Best friends is about as bland as they could have possibly made it, it sounds like The Weeknd's songs with Juice Wrld and Post Malone. The Juice Wrld one was better than Best friends honestly.

I was the same, and to an extent I still am, If you listen and not think about trilogy, or kissland etc etc it’s not a bad album.. but there’s that voice in the back of my head saying remember kissland, remember adaptation, remember all these dark, lyrical songs, kissland is my all time favourite album so I’m obviously going want that type of album again.. it’s better than BBTM and starboy, but I agree, he’s never made an album that’s so short. What happened to the 5/7 min songs.. it’s a very good concept, the teaser made it seem like a really dark album.. these type of songs I don’t really like. It reminds me of die for you which I hated. This album won’t become my favorite the weeknd album or even second but the concept of it is that it is a radio station and they like general radios usually play more catchy poppy songs. at first i also didn’t know how to feel about the album because i loved the weeknd for his r&b music and maybe occasional pop songs like save your tears. Dawn Fm is definitely not a r&b album. And i was kinda disappointed at first because i rather listen to his less up beat songs. I felt like the lyrics besides gasoline maybe lacked the darkness or explicitness his other music has. But after reading comment about it explaining that it’s the radio that plays in the purgatory i felt a lot better about it because it’s shifted the focus from the music towards to project as a whole including the videos and all. The concept wise i rly like the album. There are some nice songs on it but nothing that could compete with after hours for example. I get all the criticism im pretty sure it’ll take some time for this album to grow on the weeknd fans that don’t really like it right now.
