- Lets see if this cures my motorbikes stalling issues...
She's on 105,700 miles, lets see how far she gets this time...
Katy I’ve been running MB12U batteries for some time now and actually just fitted a new one to my 2007 F650GS this morning. I fit the U-shaped adaptors and screw the terminals into the front threaded hole rather than down into the top. That seems to gve me the neatest cable positioning and plenty of clearance under the top and side covers.
Thanks for that Geoff :)
Good job!
That one works better definitely.
When you park for a long time during winter time, be sure to disconnect it. It is vulnerable at small consumption 24hrs a day like clock in the instrumental panel...
Good luck!
Great advice, thank you. I’ll be sure to take better care of my battery going forward. I’d forgotten about the 24hr clock constantly running in the background.
105,700...amazing. Hope that solves the stalling. Beautiful country - so nice to see all that green! Weird how I'm at a latitude similar to Spain and still covered in snow.
I hope the weather has warmed up a bit for you now. That is very strange. It was around 0-1 degrees here a week or two ago, but it is creeping up to around 10 degrees some days now. I want to get some seeds planted in the garden but they’re still threatening another frost is on its way. I’ve started some bits of indoors on the window ledge. Have you been able to take your bike out much? Bit tricky in the snow!
I had the issue of stalling while at idle. I was then told that you should keep holding the starter switch until at least two seconds after the bike starts, and wait at least 5 seconds between failed starts. Since then i have never had an issue related to stalling. Also never open the throttle while starting, that seems to confuse the computer and leads to literally zero idle on my bike. The F650 definitely has some weird characteristics related to its electronics.
That’s interesting. I did have a stalling issue when I first bought it but that was always at low speed, or slowing down, such as approaching roundabouts. After doing the TPS myth reset that seemed to settle the slow speed stalling but the high speed stalling is much more of a worry. Was yours stalling at high speeds?
@@HaynesGarage No, mine was just stalling when approaching idle engine speed. I think it just has something to do with the way this bike idles. It has a tiny stepper motor which pushes a screw in and out of a hole, controlling idle air flow. I believe that incorrectly starting this bike (eg using throttle) causes this stepper to be "confused".
Hi Katy! I have the same single spark bmw f 650 gs and it is driving me crazy with a lights problem. Brake light seems to be all the time on, and the headlights or the dipped headlights don't turn on no matter what i do.
I had an oil leak throw the air filter about a week ago, dropping the hot oil down to the main wires. I think I have to change the main wires of the bike... That will be funny...
I was wondering if you have any sort of advice or technical documents of the bike so the journy can be easier.
Thank you very much!
Hi Victor, Have you checked the little metal tab that is in contact with the rear brake switch (near the brake pedal) Sometimes it bends out of shape which makes the brake light go on, I just use pliers to bend this back sometimes.
I use my Haynes manual for a lot of the things I do, but the MAX BMW Motorcycles website also has plenty of useful information as it has diagrams for your exact bike and you can look at the individual parts and components. Hope that helps.
@@HaynesGarage Fixed! That was exactly the problem. About the headlights, i had to put another wire from the batt so it turns on.
I had same problem stalling.
Plug gs 911 and found a green and purple wire from iac damaged and touching subframe near to ecu.
I have photos if you need
Hi Ramon, sorry for the delay in replying. That is interesting, do you think that was what was causing the stalling issue? I will take a look later today.
In my case , stalling fault have been repaired after wire isolated. Gs911 from aliexpress detect "iac short to ground"....and after a detailed inpection found a green-purple wire touching subframe... You Need disconect a big plug from ecu and remove the isolation tape to see the wires...
Around 5 years with this problem time to time.
I hope it has helpfull for you
So what's the verdict, Katy?
You’ll have to give me a little more time to find out ;) With a baby due in less than 6 weeks I’ve had to put mechanics and riding my motorbike on hold but as soon as I’m back on the road I’ll give you an update :)
@@HaynesGarage Oh absolutely, only makes sense. Congratulations!
Do you still have the idle issue?
No more stalling issues as of yet however I still haven’t clocked up many miles since replacing the battery. My friend has kindly taken it for a longer test run up to Peterborough whilst I look after my 8 week old, and so far so good. I will plug in the diagnostic tool when he returns my bike to see if any error codes have appeared.
Hi Katy! So with new battery stalling issue fixed?
Hiya, thanks for asking. It is too soon to tell. I want to ride her for at least 1000 miles carefully first before I’m convinced this problem has gone. I will keep you posted :)
@@HaynesGarage Thanks, really want to know if it fixed and hope it is and you will enjoy riding 2023 season
