  • After you have practiced measuring an EQ, the next step is to measure a speaker in Smaart. Finally!

I love to geek out about the physics of sound. This channel focuses on the growing opportunity for live sound engineers to improve their confidence and consistency through the understanding of the principles of sound system design and optimization. My goal is to make this channel upfront and honest about my success and failure, so you can learn from both.
I am always open to suggestions and feedback so please comment on this video or contact me through my site.

Hey Nathan, hope your doing great. First of all I would like to say thank you for sharing this kind of knowledge. Just wanna know how can I import those Meyer traces on open sound meter. Thanks.

Hi Mtcheve93! Thanks! Hmmm, which Meyer traces are you referring to? OSM, and every other audio analyzer I'm aware of have the ability to import CSV or TXT files.

Why do you call it delay and not latency? I’ve always associated delay with an effect and latency with digital lag.

I don't know. I'm not totally clear on the difference. I guess because when you add delay to an output processor it's never called latency. And if you look at the L-Acoustics Preset Guide, it says "pre-alignment delay values", not pre-alignment latency values. Seems like delay is more common than latency, although I agree that latency is more clear.

10:26 everything sloping away is happening in the past?
That is very interesting, it almost sounds quantum/esoteric haha. call you tell me a little bit more about this?

Hey Casa, again, big question. I'll do more about this in the future, but for now, check out this video - ua-cam.com/video/_KZ1_Je9fA8/v-deo.html

hi nathan ! so many thanks for this videos greetings from colombia.... my question is: is possible to do a measurement in a extremely large reverberation room like a coliseum or something? thanks!!

Hi David! Sure. You can do a measurement anywhere. For the 2-ch measurements it might be a little harder to get the delay locator set correctly.

Hello Nathan, please mention that for this measurement you used a Y balanced cable one end to as a reference and one as a feed for the active speaker. I had hard times figuring out this, I had to do some verifications with the mixer and without, only if you are looping back the reference from the back of your sound card you can verify yourselves with the formula ( mixerdelay + tof = delay) if you are going straight to the console than back from the console through a matrix output the formula does not count. Is that right? Thanks!

Hi Adrian. Yes, I am using a Y split cable to duplicate the output. It has a TRS balanced jack on one end and two of the same on the other end.
I'm not sure I am totally clear on your question. What are you trying to measure? Are you trying to measure your console?

Nathan Lively i took your videos in order, i setup smaart like in your video about signal verification out from soundcard to the aux in mixer than from the mixer aux out matrix back to sondcard and out from the mixer (dl32r) to the speaker...and i did not get the right numbers for the "tof", i just figured out that i get the right "tof" only if i loop back from the soundcard to one of it's inputs. My point is that you did not mentionet your measurement method / procedure...signal flow for this video in particular. Thanks!
