  • Just start this commentary at the very start of the movie when you press play. You should be able to hear parts of the movie behind Matt Reeves talking so use that to make sure you're still in sync.
Watch this commentary track alongside The Batman (2022). Some sections have been muted to avoid copyright. These sections were just audio from the movie, not apart of the commentary track. The black screen is just so the video could be a few hundred megabytes to upload instead of half a dozen gigabytes, because I had to upload it over and over, muting different sections until it would no longer get auto blocked by UA-cam.

@@user-qs2rp6kv9c I shoulda taken notes or something I can’t remember everything but like the train scene he says practically the main point of this suit is to be intimidating. Okay well that idea obviously went out the window because when the guys first see him they laugh. Yes very intimidating. And what was the whole point to make it scary with the foot steps if they’re going to lead up to a laugh. It doesn’t make sense. Matt also talks about drifter saying well you can’t have Batman walking through the streets in the suit that’s be stupid. Yes! That would be stupid that’s why he watches and runs across rooftops. When do you ever see Batman just taking a stroll. BTAS comics Arkham. He gets around by going across rooftops grappling, or the Batmobile. Matt also talks about him in the crime scene. He says how does Batman go about investigating a crime scene. Not like that! Batman either gets there before through police scanners, batwave, or just being on patrol and seeing it. And does what he needs to do “before the cops contaminate it” and is out before they even get there. OR he gets there after the cops where he gets there by himself and gets what he needs. He doesn’t walk in the open being called names. He’s supposed to remain “the shadows” this creature of the night. Not making an appearance in the open. Another big problem I had was Matt explaining his motives. I like he’s supposed to be angry but he’s angry for the wrong reasons. Matt says he became Batman to make meaning of his life and enact revenge because he doesn’t know how to get over it. No. His motive is he does know how to get over it he makes his promise he dies this to be a hero to make sure this never happens to another boy again. He puts others above himself. From the start. Not because he’s confused and doesn’t want to be hurt again. In the interrogation scene Matt says words that should never be said about Batman. Paraphrasing “we see riddler is actually smarter than batman” ugh! Batman is one of the smartest people in DC not riddler. The whole point of riddler is he found someone that can test his intelligence and he always tries to prove he’s smarter but never can because Batman always outsmarts him and he throws a fit about it. (Arkham BTAS the Batman 2004)There are a lot of others but that’s what I thought of off the top of my head.

@@user-qs2rp6kv9c no I didn’t. And first check your facts because 2004 is year three. Still inexperienced. I mentioned Arkham he’s year two. You want me to talk about source material. Fine year one dark victory and long Halloween. When does he ever, EVER do anything that I have issues with? Tell me when. Because the whole “hEs YeAr TwO” is bull crap. Him being year two has nothing to do with anything. Yeah Batman earth one is crap for the same reason and that’s not even canon. I’m talking about real Batman not your alternate world batman. (Besides people crap on Ben Affleck because he’s not like the source material. You can’t pull some alternate earth one crap out and say that’s how it should be and hate on bens because he’s based off TDKR). But anyway whoopty doo if it’s Halloween. You think that sounds like good writing to have Batman be mistaken for some cosplayer? Pfft okay. Matt literally says ITS SUPPOSED TO SCARE!!! He doesn’t do that. Hahaha you know how paradoxical that sounds. Batman struggling jumping across rooftops. You obviously don’t like BATMAN. You like man man. The man in a bulletproof suit. You think that’s cool? You go to the movies to watch a guy? I go to the movies to see someone that is a superhero that does things that I can’t do. Because it’s cool. Yeah earth one missing the jump in the beginning DUMBBBB! The peak human conditioned athlete that trained around the world to perfect his body misses the jump. Yes very cool very heroic. Again mentioning non canon comics. Why don’t I just start talking about saying he’s inaccurate because he doesn’t use guns. Thomas Wayne kills. But that’s a different universe just like earth one. Again I’m talking about real canonical modern age comic Batman. And HE doesn’t do this dumb crap. And did you read the comic. He didn’t fail to take out three kids. The kid got scared and fell off the freaking balcony what did you want Batman to do. He had to hold on to the kid the whole time you dunce.

They all sneak around rooftops, fly around, are master fighters, are master detectives, don’t look freaking foolish every five minutes. THOSE ARE ALL EARLY BATMANS. An hour into watching this film in the theater, my daughter leans over and asks me if this is the best Batman movie ever. My response was maybe, even just 1/3 of the way through the film. By the end I had no doubt. Regardless of how much I may like them, the other films are action films with Batman in them. THIS is a true Batman film. Matt gets the character like no one really has before. I would LOVE to just sit down and pick his brain on his thoughts on other stories he’d like to use & other characters.
My sequel idea would involve the Court of Owls and Hush. I think they would fit perfectly into the world he’s created. Before we get the Joker again, I’d love to see some minor characters we haven’t seen, yet. Firefly, Ventriloquist & Scarface, Clock King, not as the main focus, but in side stories throughly future films. I also think this would be a great world to introduce Damian into.

The only thing about the Batman that I hate is how it inspired so many people to just all of a sudden start dogging on Christopher Nolans trilogy, now after over a decade. Guys, just because someone else made a good Batman doesn't mean that those films aren't still great.

Can't wait to beat up for this take... Seriously. As great as The Batman is... I cannot remember one scene or sequence that I would wait for or anticipate.
As I listen to this commentary, it dawns on me, Matt Reeves is a brilliant production designer. Full kudos for directing The Batman. I loved it. But I have no inclination to watch it again. There is not one single scene that resonates. By and large, from an audience perspective, I watched it, it was awesome. Dunno if I can remember any scene. I truly cannot. This commentary supports that thinking. I thought I was nuts. The Batman is not fluff. It is wonderful...I guess. My impression was "Wow!". Never ever thought to watch it again. I mean no disrespect to anyone involved in this project. This doc-commentary was a neat insight. Now I know why.

This is such an underrated film. The whole singular idea, by Matt Reeves, that this is a man who is unhinged and unhealthily obsessed with fighting the criminal element at night who is constantly beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands and with his unlimited amount of vast resources at his disposal. All he sees in the criminal element, in this corrupt town that his family helped to build and found dating back to the late 1800s, are the people who killed his parents as a young child making him an orphan.
So, he dons the mantle of that which he fears the most, in the form of the Batman, after training for the majority of his life to rid his city of the evil that took his parent's lives. He dosen't know who was responsible for killing Thomas and Martha Wayne so every criminal he sees, to him, is the criminal that killed his parents on that fateful night when he was only 10 years old. He is addicted to this mission, like a drug, so as both Bruce and Batman, he spends all of his time, trying to succeed in this impossible task he has set up for himself. That's why he never sees the light of day as Billionaire Bruce Wayne and is a social outcast and pariah. He is a man driven by vengeance; by revenge. By the end of this journey, as we see Bruce on a physical, mental, emotional and psychological level and transform from a young, naive, impatient man who makes mistakes still early in his career as a crime fighter we see him then become something else by the end...a symbol of hope, an ideal, a form of inspiration that makes criminals terrified to step out at night and commit their atrocities that makes Gotham City one of the worst places to call home. A city with a history and a foundation steeped in corruption and crime that ties back to the Wayne family and and their vast fortune. It also plants the seeds that will give him the inspiration to step out in the light of day to transform into the billionaire, playboy industrialist more interested in dating models and driving fast cars in order to hide in plain sight so no one would be able to distinguish Bruce Wayme is actually the Batman. A man consumed by vengeance who transforms into a symbol of hope. Obviously a film inspired by the comic book mythos and Arkham video game series and Batman animated series from the 1990s.
Ironically, a film consisting of character arc transformations and worldbuilding moments that is actually one of the most faithful Batman comic book movies to the original source material in the 1940s. Such as Detective comics issue 27 from 1937 and batman issue 1 in 1940 created by Bob kane, Bill finger and Jerry Robinson.
Then, the new 52 comics such as court of owls and Zero year by tomeu morey, john ottley, Jim lee, Scott Snyder. Batman year one by jim lee, David Mazuchelli and Frank miller as well as Batman: the long halloween and Batman: ego and other tales. This essay is lterally just scratching the surface of why it's actually one of the best batman films yet up their woth the likes of the Dark knight from 2008.

I think this movie wasn't perfect and maybe it's also cause of the production having problems during 2020, but now that Matt has done it he can look at it and see what worked best and maybe make a really great sequel. With the Gotham he established and Batman being less angry and vengeful there's a lot of potential. Some people say they want Mr Freeze or some serial killer character but to me he should do something more gangster focused, my favourite parts in The Batman were the ones with the Penguin. It would be so cool if he fleshed out the noir-mob element with characters like Black Mask or Killer Croc or Two Face

I consider this movie a triumph, if not the best Batman movie, certainly the second-best. It stands head and shoulders above Batman Begins, if such subjective matters can be measured at all.
But this commentary answers a mystery I had with it, why did I find the Selina arc so unsatisfying. Matt state that he intended a clear, assertive romantic attraction between the characters to tie together their arc, and it's just not there. The chemistry is okay, though Rob could have done a little more in that department. But what I feel is missing is some story beat that clearly reveals Batman's feelings, some action that may not directly show his attraction, but can't actually be interpreted any other way. Instead, he mostly ignores her until she reaches out to him. Any actions that one could interpret as motivated by attraction have other more likely motives. Or they're just kind of vague.
It doesn't have to be anything major. One line would be enough. Say, for example, when Batman prevents Catwoman from killing Falcone, all she needed to do was demand to know why he cared. He doesn't even have to have an answer. Just being unable to respond would have been enough. But because his motive never came up, it seems more like he was just trying to make sure he could get the real story of his parents' murder out of Falcone. His comments about saving her soul by preventing her from becoming a murderer actually felt quite patronizing. Who the hell is he to try and shield her "innocence?" That's some patriarchal bullshit right there. He's still just a rich boy, completely naive to the life she's led. How likely would it have been that Falcone would have been her first murder, growing up in a city like that?
In fact, I felt like Batman never got the dressing down he deserved from Catwoman. Here's this guy who's obviously rich, coming down to the poor neighborhoods for revenge. Whatever it was he lost, no matter how bad, it doesn't make him special. Not down there. In Gotham, everyone's had a bad day. That's why being "Vengeance" doesn't make Batman noble in the slightest. That's what it meant when the Riddler goon also claimed to be vengeance. Being in pain doesn't entitle you to lash out at the whole world. That's the lesson Catwoman should have brought home. She was set up to deliver it, but the movie never go there.
Overall, I tend not to pick at great films like this. I take them as they are, warts and all. But as an avid Batman fan, I feel like Catwoman has never gotten to take on the role she feels meant for, the voice of perspective. Catwoman has no loyalty to society the way Batman does. If Batman ever achieved his mission and restored law and order to Gotham, it wouldn't improve her life. On the contrary, she'd be stuck in a minimum wage job and maybe end up on the street. Or she'd have to marry some sleazeball like the ones sizing her up like a piece of meat at the Iceberg Lounge. She's endured every tragedy Bruce Wayne has, and they were all compounded by the fact of her poverty, like the Riddler. She's not out to stick it to society, but she has no illusions that it will ever become a better place. Not for people like her. Batman's crusade is just to make the world safe for billionaires. And the thing is, he's so wrapped up in his own world-view, he doesn't even see that. Someone has to lay it out for him. And the best person to do that is Catwoman. I was hoping this film would give us that, but it kinda shrugged it off. Maybe next time.

@@mrf.7528 Agreed. I just would have liked to see more. Maybe something was lost on the cutting room floor.
I also have a thing about Catwoman. I think her role in the evolving Batman concept has been ready to expand for years, but it hasn't quite gotten there yet. The whole thing where she and Bruce get married may have touched on it, but it seems to miss the core thing. Batman is trying to fix society, and Catwoman is trying to escape society's oppression. But neither of those things achieves a just society. That would take radical change, a synthesis of Batman's desire to fix the system and Catwoman's clarity about the system's innate shortcomings. That conversation hasn't happened yet.

I feel like any relationship between Batman and Catwoman is something that needs to develop over more than one volume. What I do find interesting about Reeves' take is that it kind of seems to be the first live action iteration where they separate mutually. In Batman Returns, it felt like Selina did the leaving, while the opposite seemed true in The Dark Knight Rises (if one ignores the ending).

Not Two-Face. Not Poison Ivy. Not Killer Croc. There is a whole episode of BTAS that goes into why this just isn't true and yet people still keep insisting that it's the case with Batman.

This movie was terrible - i have to say - It is great that he had insight into Batman but at the end of the day, he is the perfect example of what i call 'modern man' in just being way too analytical to the point of paralysis and WAY too full of oneself to be able to talk the talk but not actually execute and walk the walk.
I am ALL about production - be it your own graphic novel, own album or own film - but given his budget and the fact they have so much money as well as so much resources... this script and screenplay and everything is just ... very bad. That being said, it's great to see why he made his decisions and you can tell there is at least an interest in the material -
I would say though that it is still surface level and the actual act of making a movie was not taken into consideration. I am all for 'slow burn' movies but it was indeed very boring and forgettable - I can't blame people for hating it and just not even caring to watch more than 1 hour of it.
