So how much. The 42 boston whaler is 1.2. Then they want 35 per foot ,not counting my 500 pound girlfriend's pump out on a daily bases from my poor comode maybe I should invest in a oil tanker. By the time we cross the Atlantic empty. The tanker will be full from my girlfriends waste deposits.
Hatteras 45 was the first boat I had ever been on. Raised in the mountains. At 14 my dad took me on a trip with his friend that owned a hatteras 45. Was the best week of my life. Loved that vessel.
I worked at the same plant back in the late 80's working on line #5 building 65' Convertibles. I worked in station #5 which was finish carpentry and headliners. Business was booming then. Worked 12 hour days M-F and 8 on Saturday. Fat wage, time and a half overtime, full medical and dental and regular wage increases.
@@BoatTEST They REALLY had some Master carpenters there. Some worked up on the middle deck making cubicles to be lowered into motor yachts. Almost all boats had some cubicles lowered in. I think I remember hearing that the 65 was still mostly stick built. We had a Master carpenter on our boat at our station. Roger Montgomery. He fitted most of the solid cabin doors which changed slightly on every boat. The doors of either solid teak or mahogny costing thousands of dollars each were putty in his hands.
Really interesting - I appreciate that you explained the technical details and processes as its this that really demonstrates why Hatteras boats are so expensive (rather than just saying something like "they are expensive because they are the best") Great video - very informative.
Amazing! -- QUESTION -- I don't understand what I am seeing @ 3:04.. How many layers of fiberglass are on the hull? It looked like they placed one layer on top of the foam? Is that correct?
I Captained a 65 hatteras convertible called the maggie back in the early 90's and that vessel was a beast in heavy sea. 26 knots threw huge seas and never missed a beat out ran all those so called fast sport fish. i fished out of singer Island in heavy weather and all the local boys stayed home.
Spent three years with Bertram Yacht, back in the late eighties building fixtures. Those who crafted the new models were the cream of the crop. Two Brits. The bottom dropout, in 89, ended up with the airlines. Hatteras were and are still top of the line
I own a 1988 Hatteras 38C, which so happen has a square keyway in the drive shaft. 3 months ago I lost 1 of my propeller to the 100 feet deep sea bed. I managed to manoeuvre back to my marina. 1 of the drive shaft snap off exactly as in 4:57 of the video. Remaining shaft is cracked exactly as in 4:43. If Hatteras has knew it since 2018 why would they not tell the owners earlier?
Every shaft built is made with square keys.. It is the most common in the tooling industry for carrying load. More than likely the sacrificial material was to hard to strip/break..
Looks so nice! -- QUESTION -- I was watching Jarrett Bay boat build and it seems like they make the hull from plywood and then cover the wood with fiberglass?? Not sure what I was watching with them. Is that possible? Do they actually make a wood boat with fiberglass on top of it? Would this not get wood rot over time?
WOW - just a rough calculation on the post mold clean up LABOR (no materials) it's close to Ten Grand ! Hand laid, hand built is costly but safety and longevity are priceless. Thanks, nice tour.
The resin infusion fiberglass is cheaper than hand laid fiberglass and results in a better product with fewer air bubbles in the fiberglass, and lighter, since there is only as much resin used as needed.
That was informative. I wish the cabin had a forward windshield not a big blacked out decal. Yeah I get that it's stronger, yet some how many other quality manufacturers have figured this out. For that reason alone I'd get a Riviera.
That works with cars too.. High quality cars/boats depreciate differently.. Cheap products depreciate 20% or more, as soon as you take them off the lot..
Once you paint a boat you take away from it's value. Hit the doc a little to hard and you will see how fancy that paint job is. Gel-coat is more than 20 times tougher than paint and will also outlast paint 20 to 1. If you need to clean and re-straighten your molds up than do it. You still have to Gel-coat the mold before you start the lamination schedule why not pop your hull out of the mold and have a 50 year finish on it that's shinny and ready to go. Paint will not stick good to Gel-coat never did and never will.
Hatteras is expensive because they are built better than most others. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Would you want to be out on the ocean in a large but poorly built yacht or a smaller but well built Hatteras that you know will bring you back safely? The sea is way too unforgiving to take one's chances in a bargain big boat.
no way in hell I would want to sand that for 15 full days !! hi Bob, what are we doing to do today ? Samething we do everyday.....for the next 3 weeks....
My mom used to work for Hatteras I grew up in New Bern North Carolina used to be a great place to live until until a lot of people from North came down and took it over and now it's just a bunch of assholes had to move away from there but it is my hometown
Too bad the workers will never know the nautical thrill of Hatteras ownership and must vicariously experience the sensation on the company yacht or perhaps at the invitation of a proud Hatteras owner at the local yacht club. Their only hope is a MegaMillions payoff, which we all secretly yearn for, or an inheritance from their rich Uncle Jim, who was not a Hatteras skipper himself, but whose beneficence could make that dream come true
Same goes for workers at Ferrari,Bently,Lambo, Giant Homes, what's your point? Most wealth is achieved not handed to! Wealth also comes in many ways not always Cash money. You must be a Libtard or just ignorant, one in the same Ha ha ha. You look LAZY.
Nordhavn has quality issues. They made many changes over the years. And you have to wonder why they only built one 120 and that owners is spending a lifetime making sure everyone knows it was a poorly built boat compared to others. They have a niche, marketing. Not arguing that they aren’t amazing boats, but so was Hatteras. Compared to so many others running that race.
of course haterras is going to show the premium price as justified, that's just self-promotion. how an independent analysis would rate the relative value of hatteras is a different thing. curious why they make them so old fashioned and boring looking?
Love my Hatteras 45. It was built before any of this fancy tech but is a solid beast!

Je garde le souvenir du 42 de mon père une merveille de bateau

That's hard work Bill, and happy to hear how they treat their artisans! Thanks for sharing.

The company hatteras no build custom yachts. Example 100 sport fishing

8MoonsOfJupiter thank you for watching!
worked for hatteras for 5 years in the mid 2000s til they laid about 1500 of us off due to the economy. Was a pretty good job
love my '89 Hatteras DC; Carpe Diem!! she's built like a Mack!!

It’s in line with that old saying, good labor isn’t cheap and cheap labor isn’t good.

Bayliner employees all exited the chat
We're just here to see how to do it right!
Wish i could have a Hatteras, they're beautiful
I did a job in New bern Nc...never knew Hatters was there...would of loved to see the place.
Looks so nice! -- QUESTION -- I was watching Jarrett Bay boat build and it seems like they make the hull from plywood and then cover the wood with fiberglass?? Not sure what I was watching with them. A Hatteras for me is the dream boat of all dream boats. I love my 50 MY. The original Hatteras Motor Yacht.
Depending on the year, yours was either built in High Point and trucked down; but probably built here in New Bern on line 3 or 4
The resin infusion fiberglass is cheaper than hand laid fiberglass and results in a better product with fewer air bubbles in the fiberglass, and lighter, since there is only as much resin used as needed.
It isn't cheaper when you look at the labor involved..
Very informative.
Very very beautiful vessel!

Respect
Why no rounded slot on the rudder shaft like the propeller shaft? lol
So, your best value would be a used Hatteras? Maintenance up to date of course.
Probably. Most good values are buying used in the boat market
That works with cars too.. High quality cars/boats depreciate differently.. Cheap products depreciate 20% or more, as soon as you take them off the lot..
@@THOMASTHESAILOR I can totally agree with you. Used cars, even 1-2 years old are a ton of a better deal than brand new ones.
American technology at its best!
Very interesting. Cheers
Very cool...wish I could afford one
Just one thing, the key goes into the keyway. Round or square, they're keys, not keyways. Nice video.
Because like all boats, each one is essentially hand built. The boat building industry is still waiting for its Henry Ford.
Can't wait for the BOGO sale.

Round key is what you mean. The keyway is on the shaft.
Very interesting without a four hour video 🤠
I’m a traditional wood guy, but appreciate the ease of glass.
Kind of carless at 4:00 don't you think?
Probably but looking at the shoreline, he's just heading back in to New Bern right before he has to slow down.
It sure seemed careless to me, but, He was trying to show his confidence in the craft and it's smooth and steady ride..
Well, building quality wise this really doesn't look expensive. But being not well organized is expensive, true.
Thanks for this video.
Yeeeah relying on an app on your phone to tell you the fuel level in your yacht while you're 30 yards away at the pump isn't the brightest idea..
All the quality design can't be made up for later, with after market items.. "Start out right, end up right" .. Quality never goes out of style..

Agreed!
no way in hell I would want to sand that for 15 full days !! hi Bob, what are we doing to do today ? Samething we do everyday.....for the next 3 weeks....
The vacuum infusion technique is used by most boat builders today.
very cool!
compared to steel?
Gel-coat is still much more durable than paint and will outlast the paint 20 to 1 but they are a very well built boat one of the best !!!
That odd because we sure do paint a lot of gel coat boats here at Blue Devil boats here in wanchese NC.
Thanks
There's a mattress in the Hatteras.
watching this and can't even afford a car. ahahahahaha
amazing

I want buy +919319017715
Cuz they manufactured in U.S. Look at Nordhavn and their quality is so great but manufactured in China and Taiwan.

Wholly shit! This is the real deal! Great informational. Cheers!
Rocketing along at warp speed and standing on swim platform without life jacket...I cringed when I saw that.
The guy with the bucket of resin has a Cabo shirt on
Hatteras owns Cabo and lays them up in New Bern. :)
Rolex Submariner Kermit
Labor intensive
rolls royce of the seas, maybe :)
The cabinet in vid looks like Ikea. Some like Ikea but I don't.
Hatterases are tanks 💪💪
Sweeet........Rolex
of course haterras is going to show the premium price as justified, that's just self-promotion. how an independent analysis would rate the relative value of hatteras is a different thing. curious why they make them so old fashioned and boring looking?
must be nice to be stinking rich....ill never know.
Great quality but I do not like the look of them.
Aluminium. Ist BETTER
Welding
Meh.
It's not expensive. It's overpriced!
