I adored Ice Cold in Alex. My late father was an ambulance driver in the British Army in the late 40s/50s and Harry Andrews and Sir John captured that solid oak reliability of those men wonderfully. Some people suggest Anthony Quayle's Springbok accent was patchy in places but the writers should be applauded for breaking the mould in depicting a German as a human being as opposed to an automaton (no mean feat in the late 1950s) and remember Van Der Poel was a German 'pretending' to sound like a South African, so there was a touch of genius within that inaccuracy! Wonderful film and a wonderful man.
Mills had a rare endowment. Most actors' voices go haywire as they age, becoming hoarse or randomly pitched like a badly tuned trumpet. Mills's voice grew more mellifluous. He was over 90 here and he is speaking with complete clarity and beautiful, gentle tonality.
As a child I saw this film with and still do, sheer aw , my Dad explained the stuck truck scene, the grip trick they performed using the cranking handle and gearing, , as a result of this film I’ve never been stuck in any vehicle….like all the good oldies their was always a good message, thanks John R. I agree Colin and it is so fully to hear the wonderful Sylvia Simms recalling the tale of her having one too many buttons undone an the problem getting this scene passed the censor's! lol

My all-time favourite movie. Watched about 45+ times since 1977. Read the book, John Miils' autobiography, got the DVD, signed photo of John and ICIA photo stills. Anthony, Harry and Sylvia played great parts too. RIP Sir John - a true 'old school' gentleman/actor xx😅
