In this clip an F/A-18C Hornet conducted an intercept of a Russian Flanker and IL-78. The Russian pilot "complies" with the instruction and proceeds to conduct Pugachev's cobra.

Russian aircraft. Explain why you are only going 250 kts

is 250 knots the usual for cobra maneuvers? i don’t know much
@@gt_pr4e383 yeah a lot more and you'll got straight up, a lot less you'll just stall out, 250 is the sweet spot for the cobra, depending on the aircraft obviously

@@kem9952Basically yeah. Plus English is being taught in russian schools anyways, so most people have basic understanding of the language
This is why only in video games and movies do they do intercepts by flying fingertip formation. Real world you have your wingman in firing position on the rear 100% of the time. If you’re a single ship you intercept to the rear
Not to mention if he were to actually have to fire on said plane that shit isn't going to work lol
Wingtip formation done for dramatic effect.
Wingtip formation against civilian\unarmed planes, if they dont respond he has to try and comunicate with the cockpit with hand signals, comms might be down or even passenger might be piloting the plane.

Games look better than on board video footage from aircraft.
Ha!
Unless pilots have a go pro it's still black and white most the time. If there even is video footage, which there usually isn't since the pilot needs to manually engage the recording system and there usually aren't any situations where that's called for. It's like, 640p too. I'm also pretty sure the film is stored on cassettes still
Fun fact though, those awful little cassette recorders still cost up to $10,000 tax payer dollars... Here's a section from an article going over the Navy's struggle to make these things actually even work. Also, they break, a lot
"TEAC admits that its recorder, at almost $9,900, is more expensive than PE's $5,150 unit, which uses consumer video-recorder components, but says that the lower price per repair quoted to the Navy, $695 compared with PE's $2,050, would result in significant life-cycle-cost savings." Yeah... A cassette recorder cost's $10'000 meanwhile we can't give lower enlisted sleeping quarters which aren't a sardine can... thank's congress

Wingman of the F/A18 in the back: *radios his airbase to get a Flanker template and some spray paint out*
Ha! Yeah, if only that ended up being the case. Unfortunately the wingman didn't do a great job, if you watch the full video :)
what does getting template means??
@@manas2656 templates are cut outs of shape you paint over, so an image can be applied to the surface below. Getting just means aquiring.
@@sfctw1 does making template means downing a jet or something?
@@manas2656 no, however it's tradition for air crews to paint the silhouette of a downed aircraft (or other form of identification, example being swastikas for Allied pilots in WW2) onto your own aircraft, usually with a template.
"Affirmative and will comply before shoving a heater up your exhaust." :D
Ehhh not really 😂 wingman is in firing position so if he pulls a Cobra it is more than likely the SU-27 getting a “heater shoved up his exhaust” and if the SU-27 somehow manages to cobra behind both of them…well he’s now slow and in a 2v1 dogfight against opponents with an energy advantage. One with bank left (take him in the turn) and the other will take the vertical so in the end the SU-27 ends up with the “heater in his exhaust” 😂🤷🏽♂️
Damn he topgunning
Well, to be fair, he did comply.
Real 27 would have just went into a sharp left hand bank and pushed the 18 off while almost causing a mid air collision. Normal Russian sop
Lol
They usually just tilt their plane on one side just to show that they are loaded with missiles.
@@Xover112 loaded with outdated low PK missiles that out ranged and out maneuvered by US missiles...
@@weasle2904 Outranged is true, However most Russian missiles can outmanuver western missiles by quite a bit, the only problem is bad tracking capabilities so they can't use their maneuverability to the fullest
@@Prodagist Bullshit, AIM-9x is better than any IR missile Russia has. Their missiles are completely and utterly unproven. Any Ruski fanboys who praises Russian missiles for their "high maneuverability" is literally just spewing conjecture and have no idea what they're actually capable of. From what we do know about Russian missiles, they're second rate and have very low PK. They're trash.

Nice that you used a game for this, seeing as the SU-27 seems weirdly absent from actual duty these days.
What makes you think it’s absent, must be because no CNN anywhere near the real fighting.
Su-27 is most certainly not absent. The newer Su-27SM2/3’s are being equipped with R-37M’s and using them to hit Ukrainian aircraft over a hundred miles away.

An F-18 Super Hornet is capable of pulling a Cobra Maneuver but no so much of the old F-18 Hornets.
In a movie yes, in real life no. F-18's have never pulled a cobra. They just have high AoA and nose authority, but defo not a cobra by any definition. F-14 is the only US jet that comes close to being able to do one.

@@CommandT not really because if you didnt have the wingman back in rear covering then the scenario is BS and if you did that Su-27 is giant fireball headed for the deck... either way no point in watching...
@@Asghaad There was a wingman covering all the way out back, just like the F-18's wingman was covering him. You're missing out :) You're also missing a shittone of nuance like the wingmen out back being able to fire their heat seekers straight into a tangle with lead and bandit and not hitting the wrong plane. Amongst many other things.
@@CommandT in that scenario there wont be an intercept IN FRONT of enemy wingman, they will first deal with rear element then proceed to the leader...
in case of an intercept the ACTIVE party doing the intercept is in advantage because they get to choose how the things will go and NOONE SANE will park themselves in front o enemy wingman trying to intercept his leader ...
either they will get reinforcements getting one flight to cover the rear OR they will first intercept and push off the wingman. doing it any other way would be suicidal and STUPID.
@@Asghaad
Honestly either an incompetent intercept or staged event. In no way, shape, or form, would you intercept the leader while leaving his wingman in perfect position.

Then the hornet just goes vertical and drops down on the suhkoi that just dumped all their speed.
You can watch the full video if you like and see that this was not the case. Seems to be a common misconception amongst many commenters :) Full video is here: ua-cam.com/video/UxfD7M1S_vE/v-deo.html
@Command T Yeah watched the video. Hornets weren't flying basically. In both these scenarios. Flankers die. Wingman gives the il and sukhoi a fox 3. No escape. While hornet lead just goes and stays vertical while wingman chases the sukhoi lead hornet drops down on sukoi gets a fox 2. On top of that intercepting hornet didn't even react to the su movements gave the sukhoi 2-3 seconds. It's a pretty shit engagement tbh.
@@CaptainSpacedOut The point is not in the F-18 wingman doing his job, the point is that the cobra does not put that Flanker into a disadvantageous position energy-state wise with regards to the lead F-18, which is what you implied.
