I load excavators almost daily. I'd never go over the side in my lowboy. I go right over the back, on a 16 tire Cozad. Otherwise, I'd breakdown and go over the front.
When we do this on the rarest of occasion we will have our guys install a ply wood wear layer on the deck and weld a temporary piece of angle steel on edge. It's easy to cut off after and it saves the edges from deformation. A lot of extra work but we charge extra for delivery or pick up where we just can't split the trailer
Thanks for the good advice Kyle, much appreciated. This job was in Kent, WA and the road is very narrow at the top of a zero-visibility hill. The guys just wanted to keep it safe as possible.
Good job loading, I have seen some bad accidents from operators that did not think it out before loading. This was a pleasure to watch. I really like the old lowboy brings back memories. We had an old manual unlock and drop lowboy back in the 1970s what a job on a hot day. Phil
I see careful and if that's slow so be it. 40+ years as an operator, and after 12 hours of scoopin' dirt he can load at any speed he chooses. I'll take slow & cautious over fast and careless - so will my insurance agent...
4spdBernie ..its not about how fast he did it. It's about the lack of skill in which he did it. And what were the truck rims for? Dont answer that question, it's entirely rhetorical.
I retired after 33 years and still don't understand why some abuse the equipment like they do. My employer would have thrown me off the job for that stunt.
I haven't read any of the 'comments' yet before I posted this. This is my first impression, the operator needs to go back to whatever school he paid thru the nose for and demand his money back.
That's an old low Boy, I use to load mine that way, but the new one, the boss didn't want the side's being bent up, had to take the goose neck off and load up front, unless you could load from rear
Should have just loaded over the back, they could have easily backed the rear end of this lowbed onto the gravel driveway so he could simply load over the back like the trailer is designed to do.
He'd came out faster just unhooking the lowboy and driving it on ..inwhich I have loaded them many times like this, a lil different way..I just jack the tracks up using bucket, then drive it on, spin around and jack the rear up as I twist it straight.. This dude is slow
why not use the pedals??driving like 5 year old boy,not like operator.i could cry when i see switch the hands between joysticks and pedals..and use the bucket to turn
Actually You should unhook due damage, broken pug hooks etc..can throw the tracks off..although I have done this many times. it is quicker and can be done a bit differently and much faster is careful, its up to the experience of the operator..Most drivers of low boys dont have the know how thats why they make it to unhook and load also inwhich is unlawful due osha..Out ina field is diff. but ona highway.. not too bright. I got 28 years of experience...just saying
For all who say about the operator being slow and he's right to go at his speeed and not others thats how accidents occur, putting a machine on to a lowloader is the most dangerious part of operating heavy plant, all it takes is a blow out from tyres and you can be through of balance.
We had a lowboy trailer similar to this one in the video & it was easier for us to load the excavator & dozer from the side than the rear of the trailer . we loaded from the side quite often .
Nice to see his way to side load this guy as a training video and in case of a situation where you just cannot just load it from the front. BUT and I say But because this guy is obviously a thinker, but if for ANY other reason, if I caught him loading my excavator that way, he'd be out of a job.
Alan Walker74 ..I'm not defending this guy because this was awful but some older machines have a lot of slop and when your doing something delicate like this, sometimes it's best to use your hands for the track placement.
Yeah so noticed a couple comments suggesting operator should of gone of the front , I do this every day in the city and the contractors we pick up for would for fire us on the spot if we took the machine on to the street and damaged the pavement!!
Thanks for your note. Operator is a nice old dog; not interested in new tricks - but - please me messsage when you post video of you loading your way and I'll ask him to watch
the info bar of this video should have read, "The fine of art fucking up a vintage '69 Peerless Lowboy trailer by side loading and excavator." Not the fine art of side loading a...
side loaded on a peerless tri axle with singe jeep many times, rookie move, and not good for the trailer, but try climbing over the back with iced grousers, or try getting back under the trailer with a single axle jeep and 50 ton machine on the deck on ice. but for crying out loud at least block the trailer side rails first to minimize the stress.
Side-loading doesn't have to be this difficult... I could do it in 30 seconds tops. That being said, I love side loaders. Ramps are so much more dangerous especially in wet weather.
Looks, at least to me, like your the only knowledgeable poster in this thread. Some of the reply's are obvious they have no clue about what you said above. BTW, I could do it in about 30 sec as well, give or take a 'sec' :)
I always prefered side loading. About 30 seconds is all it ever took me to side load an excavator or a dozer. It takes me longer to side load a backhoe or a skidsteer or a petibone forklift, but even those I can side load faster than what it took this guy to side load this excavator.
I'd like to see him sideload a big excavator and try to use the truck rims what a joke man put your bucket over put it on the trailer spinning around chain it down go down the road
crawl up to deck, pick up and get halfway on, spin around pick up ass end and walk onto the deck. place bucket down, walk tracks opposite and swing machine, boom done. rear loaders are still trying to back into site and the RGN guy is finding a flat spot for the deck to drop while sideload is chained down and about to leave site
Easier way to load, just swing boom around, place ur bucket on the ground in back of you push up move your tracks same time push your bucket, only thing left is Chris Cross ur tracks, suck ur bucket up and down, your done, boom it and leave
I haven't run equipment in a while but damn that was hard to watch!!! I also noticed that guy couldn't use the peddles and the joysticks at the same time??? Not on my low boy!!! WOW!!!
Hi nice video!!!! I am about to buy a cat 315L and I would like to know what would be the difference between the model cat 315BL and cat 315 L I can't find that information
Cat products: 3 stands for excavator (product type), 15 stands for 15ton (tonnage), B represents B series, B is newer machine compare with 315, so...B,C,D, the higher the letter the newer the machine. If L is after series letter, example, CAT315BL, L stands for long truck excavator, loooong reach... for deeeep holes. Thanks for stopping by!
Seemed like an eternity watching it, tho. You're right, didn't take that long to side-load it. Just seems like a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on the equipment doing it that way. I'm guessing they were worried about scarring up the highway with the tracks if they did it normally .. maybe?
@plcwboy: That's how a lowboy trailer is designed. There is a mechanism where you detach the fifth wheel pulling portion of the trailer from the trailer itself. After you do this, the trailer drops on the ground, the truck pulls away from it, ramps fold down, and you load your heavy equipment on it. Then you back the truck up to it and pin everything back together so you can haul it. Some people "side load" equipment on the trailer to save the trouble and effort of separating the trailer. If you use a lowboy a lot, you can "detach" faster than someone can "side load". Granted, there are rare times where side loading might be more convenient (lack of room, etc).
@ hunter Alberta Thank you for your whinny comment SAFETY NAZI . You probably wear your hard hat to Lowes because you are picking up deck screws for your wife to use, while you safely watch from inside.😂😂😂😂. Don't you have someone to protest for.
como pueden decir que es un gran operador para empezar las bandas estan todas guangas y ademas es una maquinita yo subi una 325 L igual por un lado del lowboy y me tarde menos este operador esta frio si quieren le doy una clase gratis cuando quieran
It would've been a whole lot safer, quicker, easier on the trailer and excavator to just load it from the rear! People do this Crap all the time. Just because you can load it that way doesn't mean you should. But hey, that's just my opinion 🥴
This might very well be the worst side load I have ever seen. Not saying sloppy, imperfect things don't happen, but to film it and pit it on line? Oof.

Thats the proper way to bend the main beams on a trailer! if i would have loaded that way I would be fired!!!
Those old trailers are made to be loaded like that.

I seriously was smoother than that at the age of 14 on hydraulics.....

loading over the back is how a little bitch does it.

There's always the guy pointing and trying to give instructions but won't attempt to load it. 🤣🙄

As far as I know that style of lowboy does not have a removable tongue, and cannot be loaded from the front.
I hear ya - but this is how the owner does it - so if it goes for him it goes for his employees.
Yep we would stick a couple of blocks of wood under the lowboy to stop to much twist and on we went
I'm always amazed at how some operators just can't use their feet on the travel pedals and constantly using their hands for everything.

It sounds like it is bad on the trailer. Does that tear up the trailer by loading that way?
Yes especially when you don’t know how to do it properly.
Shoud've supported the deck. This way the low loader is under too much stress
What is this, this guys first time trying this? What in the world were the rims on the ground for?
I could have unhooked the lowboy, loaded the trackhoe, and pinned back up quicker than this "side-loading" shit. AND, that's just me (all by myself).
