Carol & Beverly became very close friends after they did a tv special together. In their respective memoirs, they each devoted a chapter to laud the talent and friendship of one another.
I don't know if people today understand how much Sills did to bring opera to a wider audience. Her appearances on all the talk shows, variety shows, etc led people (including me), who had never thought they would like opera, to suddenly embrace it. And if you saw her in the late-60s/early-70s you'd understand all the fuss about her voice. It was truly phenomenal. True, she took too many chances with her voice as her fame increased, but who would trade those electric performances?
I couldn't agree more with you Dave. People today have no idea just how much Beverly did for opera. My group of 'Sills Crazies' on Facebook often discuss this very thing and we conclude the impact that she had will never be fully realised. I sincerely the new book that will be on sale next December will finally knock people over the head and she'll finally get the recognition she richly deserves. Beverly Sills was a true mensch in all respects.I do envy the fact that you met her!
petelovesbevsills What book??? Is there a new biography? I hadn't heard anything about it. I first saw Beverly on the Johnny Carson Show. I sort of knew her name, but I hated opera. Still, it was college and I didn't feel like studying! It was a hammer blow! Then I had to see her in a live performance, so of course I managed to see the Three Queens (can you imagine? I didn't know how lucky I was). Hooked for life. I met her a couple of times, she was always very pleasant, you know, like Aunt Beverly! Her voice didn't record too well; she filled the theater with beautiful sound, but on record it sounds one-dimensional.

He was a huge Sills fan and I wanted nothing to do with her or opera. How times have changed:) :)! Beverly had the worst possible recording company who didn't care how her voice sounded on record..unlike Joan's Decca/London company.
petelovesbevsills The interesting thing is that I didn't like Beverly when I first heard her, but now I think she is one of the best opera singers in the world. Her techique is uniqe. BTW, I didn't hear all her recordings yet, but for now my favorite recording of hers is a Concert with Artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (1972).
You are absolutely right in your statements. She did everything she could to make opera accessible to an everyday audience, and she did it with humor, wit, and so much charm that she was irresistible. How many young people learned about opera from Beverly Sills and the Muppets? Everyone has favorite opera singers and cling to their beliefs on who might have been the best. That is like choosing an exquisite parfume and suggesting one scent is right for everyone. Beverly might not be the best for everyone, but she is still exquisite!
Had the good fortune to see her live twice in '71, Cleopatra and Lucia, and also in recital. Having seen Rubinstein twice, they both brought the same love of art to the stage, whose lasting impact surpassed just about everything everyone else did.
