    Amazing how many people don't realize that private 911 ambulance companies don't always have stations they can park at located all throughout their coverage area. Some might have to stage, or post up, in parking lots, or on the side of the road. Amazing!

    • @ShaggyRogers1
      @ShaggyRogers1 2 роки тому +30

      Not even just private ambulances, public 911 ambulances do the same thing. You post up crews around high volume areas and a lot of the time, that's not where the station is. No one looks twice when a police officer is posted in a parking lot somewhere doing paperwork waiting on the inevitable call from one of the nearby neighborhoods. Exact same for ambulance crews.

  • @hinoron6528

    Story shared by a paramedic friend of mine: Our city is relatively calm (remember that's a good thing!) and there are few jobs for paramedics, and the ones we have often have pretty slow days driving the ambulance around, not having any (or many) calls to respond to. The areas they hang around nearby in because there ARE some calls somewhat regularly also have their share of junkies. The junkies know there are drugs (painkillers) inside the ambulance, so they often approach and try to talk my friend the paramedic into giving them some. Now my friend has a lot of experience, so rather than argue with them, what he does is offer them an injection of saline (salt-water mix used to hydrate people) without saying outright what it is (better to let them imagine their own guess). They take the shot, smile big and say how they can feel it's working already, and walk away happy, while he bites his lip, trying not to laugh (then moves the ambulance somewhere else).

      My station manager was the BEST manager I ever had. He looked out for his crews and treated us well while keeping management in check
      Then the CEO hired a marketing director without hiring more people for more rigs out daily. They had scheduled an additional 30 calls (on top of around 30 plus any ER calls) for no additional crews (15 rigs average) Our calls went from 3 a day to 7! No downtime was allowed. No food break (that became a class action lawsuit), 24 - 48 hour shifts were denied their allocated sleep time (another lawsuit), Dispatch harassed nearly every crew once a day because our customers would call asking why we're late. And we were guaranteed working for 14 hours Out of 12 and dispatch would ask "can you do me a favor and run one more?
      When my manager quit, everyone at that station quit as well. I know 2 crews that heard he quit and resigned on the spot. 2 of them EOSing themselves and going home mid shift.

    It's pretty common in many places to see an ambulance "just sitting" somewhere. Here in the Netherlands, ambulances are supposed to arrive on-scene within 15 minutes from the moment someone calls the emergency number in at least 95% of cases. So whenever one or more ambulances are out on a call, it can happen that a certain area falls outside of the maximum response time for the remaining available ambulances. In which case one or more ambulances will take up a position such that they remain able to respond quickly.

    • @Serenity_yt
      @Serenity_yt 2 роки тому +38

      There are also transport ambulances with somewhat normal time tables who don't drive with blue lights and sirens bc they dont respond to emergencies (just dialysis, chemo, docs appointments for ppl that need to be carried down stairs or have to be on a stretcher for transport, home/rehab transfers, care facility transfers, hospital transfers, hospital to outside doc transfers e.g. dentist, ...) and get this they don't need to return to any station as long as they are on time at their next pick up location. (I work in transport the amount of times we're just randomly sat on a curb somewhere bc we don't wanna spend the time driving back to station when were already almost at our next pick up place is staggering.) Side hustle exposed or sth I guess🤣
      *And no parking at the hospital ambulance entrance is not allowed the space is already cramped af even after they made a separate one for non urgent transport. As soon as you're done you have to leave (if you even still can and no one else parked you in bc there wasnt any space or they cant read and think this is the urgent entrance) Applicable at all hospitals in an about 30 -45 min radius, some further away have a better handle on that but we dont go there as often as its outside our response zone. Technically only one place (pick up or drop off) needs to be in our zone but not many ppl go over an hour away regularly except to see a specialist or for rehab.

      I DID call in once and slightly complain about a sheriff's officer doing about 110 mph down a 4 lane freeway weaving through traffic, with NO LIGHTS ON.
      He blew right past me just as I was getting ready to change lanes, and I almost took him out.
      My request was that if they were going that fast, that they turn some lights on to warn us! And I let them know I was happy they were doing something very important, but they would have lost if I had completed my lane change....
      They had the supervisor call me later, and we had a nice conversation, and I told him I know they have policies and training, and maybe they have found it's safer to go no lights because people are unpredictable when they see lights suddenly, but it needs to be balanced against the risk of someone glancing in the mirror and seeing no one near, and then cutting them off, not expecting a 110 mph car!

    • @14torre1
      @14torre1 2 роки тому +29

      And what is funny about that is that if that person actually knew the law they would know that it is actually legal for emergency vehicles to travel above the posted speed limit as long as they have audible and visual (lights and sirens) warnings. Of course they must do so safely but still.

      And I say that as someone who used to drive with lights and sirens and had the evoc training.
      Zipping past other drivers at more than double their speed is just not safe, and there was no need to do it without lights on, so it was the lack of warning lights that I was alerting them about, not the 110 mile an hour speed, since I am used to law enforcement passing me that fast on the freeway, but not at night with no warning lights weaving through traffic!
