Pain management comes in many forms - but common is a personal desire to find a tolerable balance when the pain is constant. Many feel alone, helpless and frustrated - but you are not alone! Listen to the stories and find hope that it is possible to have a life with joy despite the pain.
These different accounts show you that you are not alone with the struggles, the challenges, the frustrations and the joy when we find methods that contribute to finding ourselves (again).
Chronic pain continues to be a global health problem and the amount of people living with chronic pain continues to increase. In Denmark alone it is estimated that more than 1.3 million people are dealing with chronic pain at any given moment (approx. 400.000 is diagnosed with complex chronic pain condition).
Despite chronic pain is a global health challenge it continues to be a diagnose which many people struggle to understand. Pain is invisible and many patients still experience prejudices and lack of understanding. Understanding the impact chronic pain has on all aspects of life.
When pain becomes persistent, stubborn or even chronic, it has a significant impact on the quality of life, and often has consequences such as functional impairment, mental burnout and feelings of worry, frustration and powerlessness.
3 brave chronic pain inflicted are sharing their story and how they have come to terms with the fact that chronic pain is now part of their lives (and the lives of those close to them).
Chase your dreams - Mie (Denmark)
"I don't want to let my chronic pain define me, because I feel that I am so much more than that" (Mie)
Meet Mie, who was diagnosed with chronic nerve pain when she was just 17 years old. And although it has been difficult for Mie to accept at such an early age that the life she thought she was going to live would never be what she expected, she has nevertheless learned to accept her new life conditions.
"There, it was difficult for me to look forward how I would be able to live with this condition ..... I will not let my chronic pain define me because I feel that I am so much more than that …. It's part of my history and it has also been part of my journey. But it's still just a fraction of who I am .... but I want to chase the things which I have always dreamed of" (Mie).

    Who is FAKS
FAKS (The Association of Chronic Pain afflicted, Denmark) nationwide patient association which, since 1990, has worked to create visibility for more than 1.3 million Danes who lives with a constant intruder - namely pain (for almost 400,000 this is a chronic and complex condition).
Our initiatives range from influencing the political agenda, securing offers for pain sufferers (e.g. public and private offers), providing advice and guidance as well as offering the opportunity for community and support for pain sufferers and their relatives. FAKS is not party-political or diagnosis oriented.
We convey knowledge to patients and relatives and society about the debilitating disease that it can be like to have chronic pain, but also about the possibilities that a pain patient has through self-care and effort to achieve greater functional capacity and a better quality of life.
Living with chronic pain - helpline (SmerteLinjen) offers pain patients, relatives and professionals the opportunity to get constructive help from patient counselors and certified healthcare professionals such as nurses, occupational and physiotherapists, social workers, therapists and psychologists. All advisers are unpaid volunteers.
