  • Nordman firs are becoming a popular variety of Christmas tree in the Pacific Northwest. Seedlings are sometimes hard to find. In this video we take Nordmann fir seeds that have just finished the stratification process. We take a look at the stage the seeds are in and plant the germinated ones in a box inside the greenhouse. ‪@FlanaganHomestead‬

    How are the trees doing now? Have you done an update on them?

      I need to do an update I haven’t. They are still quite small which is expected with nordmann but alive. We will be transplanting them to an outside bed early March. I will try to remember to post a video then.

    Ive been wanting to open a nursery. Do you think selling 2-0 plugs would workimg until i can get land to plant seed beds? Would most farmers rather plugs or bare root?

    • @FlanaganHomestead
      @FlanaganHomestead  8 місяців тому +1

      I can’t answer what farmers would prefer. I get varied opinions when talking to farmers on what they prefer.

      @@FlanaganHomestead appreciate the response, do you have a preference or not really? I'm hoping to do something small scale. Maybe 10k-15k trees and market to smaller tree farmers

      @@dc2014101 I can get larger trees barefoot than plugs. If I have a chance to plant them in late fall or early winter that is my preference. But I like plugs as well.

    If I’m doing it outside, what type of light would be best for first germinating the seeds? I have a unused spot on the north side of house, right up against it. Too little light you think?

      Since these trees are being grown from seed a lot of sunlight is good. Just make sure you keep a little moisture in the ground especially when they first germinate and and have no depth to the roots.

      I started mine in the greenhouse so that it was warm enough to start a few months earlier. Once gardening season came around I moved my whole box out into the vegetable garden and let the garden sprinkler help keep it wet. There was some shade during parts of the day but several hours of direct sunlight.

      This was just a standard potting soil we had left from our greenhouse.
