Hey, thanks so much for posting this! Genius. Question: at 4:02 you mention creating columns with spacers but I am having trouble here. Where are the spacers? (Using 7.1!) Thanks so much! Side note: how to you access the image layouts? Like poster, collage, card, and overlap? I feel like I am missing something here!
This is a really creative solution, thanks Paige! The only issue is that this sidebar won't have independent scroll the way you'd ideally want (i.e. so that it stays fixed as you scroll down through the main page content), right? I suppose a plug-in would do that?
I think this was exactly what I needed to uncluttered my navigation! Thanks...I am thinking I can also run this horizontally across my page as well as vertically, right? Or would that not be a very good idea. Should I use the "attention bar" across...( I forgot what you called it, sorry)? And then just select whether it is showing or not?
Fabulous questions! I'd say this technique is best used for a blog side bar specifically - but you're 100% right to keep your main navigation as uncluttered as possible too (I'd suggest a max of 4-6 options). You can absolutely use the announcement bar if you want to have one thing really standing out at the top of your site - it works fabulously for a call to action!!
Great question! You can totes add a sidebar to a portfolio page (or any page where you can add a summary block actually)... but your sidebar itself needs to be created from a blog (you can't pull portfolio items into a summary block). Happy side-barring!!!
Where do those pin points come from. That allow you to add things like search, or change the layout? When I hover over my page, all I get is the text option.
Hey there! Sometimes if you have another block selected, they may not appear, so you just click anywhere on the page where there isn't a block (to basically deselect the block) and then hover over the "seams" between blocks to get those insert points or plus signs to appear! If they still aren't appearing, it may be worth reaching out to the Squarespace team as it could be a little glitch! (Slower internet connections are known to make editing the page a little glitchy too!) Hope that helps get you sorted!
Hey Michelle! You bet! Just create some sort of Instagram graphic/button as your thumbnail picture to add in your sidebar/faux blog (like the one I include at the bottom of my sidebar), then follow the steps in the video for linking your thumbnail and use it to link to your Insta account's direct URL (ie. instagram.com/paigebrunton) Hope that helps!
wow! You are incredible! I’ve been looking for a easy sidebar for years lol thank you thank you!
Thank ya kindly! So glad it came in handy!!
Amazing! I'm glad I checked out your video before purchasing a plugin! Very creative :)

Really creative Paige. Great hack.
Hi! Thanks for teaching. Your video and description are easy to understand, and I will show you the when I have made my own sidebar.

That’s right Eric! You’d need a fancy bit of custom coding or plugin for that! Thanks for stopping by!!
great video. How do you create the design for those buttons you have? I love them.
Thank you Paige. Instead of buttons that link to other pages on my site, could I build/link buttons for my blog categories?
I would also like to know. that would be so cool
