    I stayed in Zapopan for 2 weeks in November 2023. Zapopan seemed like the Beverly Hills of Guadalajara. Guadalajara is a huge city. Bigger than Los Angeles. Lots of traffic. Loved the people. But like most gringos, I hope to retire in a more relaxed place in Mexico.

    I disagree with you. Guadalajara may be a big city but you can find quiet spots, noisy spots, clean spots, dirty spots. What ever you want can be found there. I speak hardly any Spanish and I find no issues at all.

    I'm 45min north of Guadalajara.... average rent for 2 bedroom apt $3000 - $3600 mxn depending on how furnished it is. Average monthly earnings for folks there is 10k a month and they're thriving. TepAbril.

      Alojarse en el Centro Histórico es para turistas. Para vivir una buena experiencia local la mejor alternativa es Zapopan o el Poniente de Guadalajara.

    The Mexican peso is currently "strong" mainly because interest rates in that country have been unusually high, currently at 11.260 APR, as a result of stubbornly high inflation. Once inflation is under control and the central bank of Mexico starts lowering interest rates, the dollar will again become the stronger currency. In addition, the phenomenon known as nearshoring or establishment of businesses/manufacturing near the U.S., as well as healthy remittances flowing into Mexico are contributing to a strong peso.

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  3 місяці тому +4

      I think it is a lot more than just interest rates. The Mexican Peso is strong because the Mexican economy is strong and does not hold as much debt as many other countries. There are many factors and I honestly think the Peso will keep getting stronger as the Dollar and other currencies keep getting weaker no matter what the interest rates are

    I enjoyed aspects of Guadalajara... it's spread out pretty big... but there are some areas , like little pockets that feel like a small town.. I am thinking of Tonala where I stayed a few years back and remember walking through the Art district and it felt like a small town... However, on another visit we stayed in the City at a friend's home and I was very surprised how long it took to get across town using Public transportation... Buses do pass fairly often, but traffic and distance made it rather tiring . Once in the Center I enjoyed the buildings and Art... especially the Mariachi bands playing in the evening :)

    HIGH FIVE Jose'!
    Aren't we glad to have "authority" to show us the way? 😊

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  3 місяці тому +4

      I don't hate authority I just hate the abuse of power that comes with authority. Since in Mexico most officials are held to a higher standard and don't have the law backing the abuse of power they tend to be much better at being civil servants than in the USA where they are mostly thugs. I like it how the police in Mexico must adhere to the same laws and standards as normal citizens and they do not get any special rules or treatments like they do in the USA where they are never held accountable for their actions.

    Thanks for this video. I like bigger cities as opposed to small towns and living here in Conkal and Merida overall isn't for me. I do plan to check out Guadalajara very soon! I get exactly what you're saying. I want to learn Spanish, make local friends, learn about the culture and experience this beautiful country but currently I am not liking the food lol. It may be Yucatan because food from other parts of Mexico looks amazing! I missed it, did you fly or drive there?

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  3 місяці тому +2

      We flew out there. It is only 2 and a half hour flight and to drive out there it is about 24 hours plus gas and tolls. The Yucatan is not for everyone same as Guadalajara or other places might not be for them either. It is all a matter of preference. Mexico has something for everyone and it is up to the individual to figure out what is best for them and where they actually want to be and what they want. Thanks for sharing!

    I went to an awesome Cuban restaurant last. year in the Colonia Americana neighborhood......which I walked to from my hotel in Centrol. I'm a 45 year old black man that speaks muy poco Espanol haha and I had not issues walking around, day or night. The people were kind, and like you-before I decided to check it out, I thought it was a smaller, schmedium-sized city......I had not idea the metro was 5 million-plus. Very laid back compared to CDMX....to me it reminded me or a more modern San Antonio (TX), where I currently live. I dug it!

    I have also noticed how expensive Merida is compared with other area's in Mexico.
    Cuernavaca is even cheaper and it looks beautiful.
    Jiutepec looks nice and it's really cheap.
    Nice rentals.
    My main question about going there is how much English am I going to find?
    It sure looks nice.

    • @JoseArteagaTravels
      @JoseArteagaTravels  3 місяці тому

      i honestly don't know since I speak in Spanish and wasn't too concerned with anyone speaking in English. But I think most people in Guadalajara dont speak much English since they dont have to cater to tourists or immigrants as much as other parts of the country

    good show jose 👍your correct Mexico is self sufficient they produce and grow everything as far as Guadalajara the weather is far better than Merida
    most people move from Merida after few years because the humidity is horendous you always feel wet and sticky 😩 however Merida is smaller
    city more managaeable than Guadalajara so as you state it all depends on what your looking for :)

    Guadalajara is an excellent city and provides a better quality of life than Mexico City, but both these major cities are economical to visit. I love the HUGE city market in Guadalajara where you can spend an entire day and still have places you have not visited - the market is so huge!!!

    Great stream Jose! I have one concern however. You mentioned you ate pizza and burgers during your stay but I believe you didn't mention Tortas Ahogadas at all 😆 I absolutely love them since they can be very spicy and the bread is super unique.
    We just had a heatwave here in LA where it was 83 for 4 days and thank god it's going back to 70 tomorrow. I think the weather in Mexico is like peak American summer atm. Everywhere is so hot 😆 (yes I'm a weakling)
    On the point of things in Merida being more expensive. Perhaps since the city is so far away transporting everything has a cost that's passed down to consumers.
    I'd love to check out GDL and Oaxaca someday 🤙🏼 in Mexico I've only visited TJ, Rosarito, CDMX, Guanajuato, and my parents' town in Michoacan.
    Thanks again for sharing your perspective Jose 🤙🏼

      Yeah you are right I really didnt mention the food that much, but yes I did try the Torta Ahogadas and wow were they good! The Birria and tacos were amazing and so was all the other food I tried! Definitely a highlight! I also agree with you that the increase in price in Merida is coming from many factors but one is mainly that most things come from other parts of Mexico so that will obviously make prices increase you made a great point there. We really loved it there and are really looking closer at it not just to go visit again.... stay tuned!

    For me m, one way to gage how much is the dollar worth in the USA is to compare how much you can buy with $1? Not much now days.
    Translate to Mexico. Currently about $16 pesos. You can still get yourself a bag of chips or cookies, a taco or two in some places.
    To buy a taco or Gordita in the USA is about $2-$3.
    I’m sure there is a lot more to economics than my simple example, but the point is that the cost of living in the USA has gotten way worse recently.
    Keep up the good content.

The Culture in the US is not like the one in Mexico but you can not ignore the impact that American culture has had throughout the world and how much it has influenced culture all over the world. I understand the USA is not in a good spot culturally right now and it does not have the deep culture places like Europe or Mexico has but one can not deny the influence it does have culturally around the world, good and bad.
