Wynton Marsalis is a great artist doing great work, but he could have just started out with teaching people how to do free jazz like Ornette Coleman would and earned a perfect score. 96+ % is still an A, Wynton, even if it's called a "sock cymbal". I prefer it to be called a hi-hat, sir. Big fun with Tom Everett who is letting his undergraduates play on this gig. You've got great teachers Wynton and you're a great one, too, but that does not give you the right to be the ONLY TEACHER on Ken Burns' jazz, where you were both historian and featured artist, a conflict of interest that would be impossible in a genuine academic jazz class. But you're annointed by mass media so it's all good for you right now. What would Duke Ellington (good music/bad music) or Max Roach (loved rap that you don't promote) say about your present activities at Jazz At Lincoln Center or on public television programs like this one. Prayerfully, Wynton and I will collaborate will Wynton will show he can follow superior instructions by drummers in the Art Blakey tradiiton as well as play Ace Goombah at Jazz at Lincon Center. #namaste and #hotep and all prayers to #bu aka Art Blakey, may he rest in peace.
