Don't forget the symbolic progression of Marley's bandage. When he's at the drug store, the wound on his hand has been bleeding. At the church, he has a band-aid. As he waves to Kevin at the end, his hand is fully healed. It mirrors Kevin's growth and emotional healing with his family.
And they're both movies that many people regard as Christmas movies, when they really have nothing to do with Christmas other than being set at that time. What I didn't realize until I saw his video on Christmas movies is that the same is true of It's A Wonderful Life!
Love how the Old Man Marley flips the script. Normally he'd be revealed as the wise sage who gives Kevin advice, but it's so refreshing that it's Kevin who dishes out some life wisdom to him. Also, Catherine O'Hara's performance is Oscar-worthy.
Yeah I heard one of the major problems on set was that they kept having to do extra takes because Joe Pesci couldn't stop accidentally swearing, Legend.
When you said "Home Alone is kid Die Hard," it took me about 2 seconds to process it because it was so out of left field. Then I started to smile. And then my smile grew bigger, to the point where it almost hurt my face. And then I realized that the greatest comparison ever had been made as a throw away at the end of a video. And then the skillshare ad came on and it tapered off. Now I am filled with euphoria. Perfect.
I just saw both of these films again and yeah, the overlap is astounding. The movie starts with a party a plane flight and a home invasion. Now if Kevin would have running around in a sleeveless shirt and quoted Roy Roger's that would done it.
I found out a couple of years ago, to my horror, that there are people out there who genuinely hate Home Alone. My world has never been the same since.
Overexposure and timing. If you were a teenager or young adult when it came out (Gen X, as pointed out by Chris), it was not directed at you and you probably didn't like it. Then it just kept getting played over and over by the older and younger people in your family, cable television stations (mostly TBS and TNT) every Christmas. Kinda like how lots of people are sick of It's A Wonderful Life or Miracle On 34th Street simply because they've been played to death.
Marv's scream when Kevin puts the tarantula on him is one of the most iconic moments in cinema history. His growing look of horror, that last POV shot, and how the music builds to the scream is just perfect.
*talks about a movie emboldening family values and in which the protagonist learns to treat his parents better to not end up bitter and alone, all the while Patrick himself treats his own parents like a spoiled brat*. Classic. :-D
I personally think that Chris Columbus is a genius when he comes to bring homes atmosphere to screen : you called his Harry Potter movies borring, but I can assure you that they perfectly represent my interpretation of Hogwart Castle, old sorcerers, all the sensations I felt reading HP books. Same for Home Alone
Money talks. Bullshit walks, Baby! Never not be selling EVER. I don't roll out of bed for anything less than a cool MILL 🤑💰. Sorry moms, but money never sleeps® ....Wall Street 2
Of course I didn't notice when I saw it in the cinema as a kid, I was too busy laughing my little head off at all the hilarious pratfalls, but man, this is a really well-made film. It's a cliché to say so but they really don't make them like this any more. Everything is set up and paid off expertly, it's just so satisfying to watch, right up to the very last line: "Kevin, what did you do to my room?!" It's perfect!
When I was little and saw the "Jim Carrey is...the Grinch" posters in NYC I freaked out and asked my dad about it. "They found out who he is!? They know who was the Grinch?"
This and Movies with Mikey. Both have great analysis. Mikey hits you in the feels. Patrick is just flat out entertaining. They're very, very different, but both fantastic.
Rewatched Home Alone recently (my wife's favorite), and I can't get over how well Columbus & Catherine O'Hara played that final scene. After making it home and seeing Kevin - the cheap ending would be an instant run and hug. But there is that one beat of anxious apprehension in O'Hara's face, knowing Kevin may be bitter or angry that they left him, that expression in her face really made that ending pay off with all the feels. And the quiet coda with old man Marley. Just sublime.
They should pretend that all that possible Home Alone sequel stuff Patrick said happened and cast Macaulay Culkin as his character in Home Alone in the expendables.
In 10 years they can get him to be in the reboot of Taken so he can use all his improvisational weapon skills to save his kidnapped daughter from European human traffickers.
@@altrocks And he can use footage from the original taken movie playing in the screen when Liam Neeson's character says: "I will find you and I will kill you"...
awww i actually haven't seen it since i was a kid but i loved that film! Was it bad? Because I remember being super attached to the flubber thing and I definitely cried at the sad parts.
So, I watched Home Alone for the first time this year. This isn't because I'm 12 and it was before my time, I'm 26 and I've just never given it a real chance. I've seen the second one, and didn't really like it, minus a few scenes, so I just assumed I wouldn't like the first one either. I went over to my parents place last weekend, and my mom suggested that we watch a Christmas movie. After not finding much, and not wanting to dig into our traditional movies yet, we settled on Home Alone out of sheer desperation. My parents said they hadn't seen it since my older brother was a kid, and I mentioned not having seen it at all. We all braced ourselves and prepared to turn it off fairly early in. To our collective amazement, we all loved it. I thought at best I would find it kind of charming, and maybe smirk at a joke or two, but I actually found myself laughing and my parents were as well. In any other movie, putting a spider on the bad guy would be the most eyeroll worthy moment, but Daniel Stern's scream was legitimately hilarious. Plus it was followed up by an equally funny moment. Pesci's "Marv, what are ya doin'" could've easily been overacted with him screaming his head off, instead, he just sounds sad and scared while pleading with Stern, and I seriously can't believe this type of physical comedy got me to laugh. The point is, I didn't give this movie a chance, but now I'm a testament to the fact that this movie isn't just good because of nostalgia. I am an adult who has no connection to this film, and I enjoyed the shit out of it. Me and my family are going to watch this every year, from now on.
Patrick says Columbus doesn't get enough credit for Home Alone. I'd say he doesn't get enough credit for starting the Harry Potter franchise correctly. If the first Harry Potter had been as dark as Prisoner of Azkaban, parents would have objected, and we may have never made it to three movies, much less eight.
I wish the score received a little more love. It's one of my favorites. I tear up as soon as one of the numerous memorable themes queues. John Williams has the greatest and most recognizable career, and this is bottom of the top 5.
This is the best Home Alone review on UA-cam. Thank you for this. But I would have to disagree with Chris Columbus's Harry Potter movies being boring. There's a spirit in those two movies similar to what he did with Home Alone. Also, I could find a way to defend Home Alone 3 (and 2 of course). But Home Alone 4 and 5? Nah.
I have no idea what else to say other than, “You’ve done it again.” Another knockout video Patrick that perfectly encapsulates my obsession with the film since I was younger as well. A few of my youngest siblings are finally old enough to see it so I’ll definitely be introducing them to the child-friendly version of Die Hard this Christmas season.
I've seen exactly four Catherine O'Hara movies: This and its sequel, Beetlejuice, and Nightmare Before Christmas. While Beetlejuice's Delia Deetz is an infamously "Tim Burton" character, one rung below Disney Villain in terms of sheer presence and oppressive personality, Sally is a Disney Princess in all but name. These two extremes of character are two of my favorite performances in all of cinema. And yet for both of those, Mrs. McAllister is probably my favorite role she's played. She's a normal mom, not an extreme personality or a saint among outcasts. She's not a terrible or a wonderful person, she's just a person, and Catherine O'Hara makes her feel real. Her tress, worry, love and terror and desperation, and her true relief at the end when she and Kevin hug each other. It all feels so authentic and genuine, and that warmth is a strength of Chris Columbus' that I don't think any director can match. Home Alone used to be one of my all-tiem favorite movies. It's still one of my favorite movies I can think of that's not animated, a musical, or a superhero movie. (I have many of all three) I think Home Alone influenced the first two Harry Potter movies in a lot of ways, and I don't think of that as a bad thing. Side note about the Columbus Harry Potter movies: You calll them 'boring' Potter movies, but I'd argue they were the two that best embodied the core of Harry's story, going from a lifetime of negligence and abuse to finding love and friendship, coming to terms with life in a world completely alien to him, and all the wonders and dangers it represents. Some of the other movies came close, but those first two will always be the image of Harry Potter I have in my head. I don't think any other driector left their mark on the story the way he did. (also with each successive movie it felt like the color palette got more and more washed out and blue-green-gray, but that's a debate for another time) Happy Holidays, Patrick. ^_^
I LOVE the idea of Home Alone crossovers. In 2020, Kevin joins the UDF to battle the mimics. And even though all you need is kill, sometimes you really do have to live, die, repeat... to finally get to the edge of tomorrow.
Hey now the first two HP movies are my favorites. They have a gorgeous color palette, and feel like the books in a way that later ones didn't. The boring ones are the greyscale slogfests directed by David Yates.
I came to Home Alone when I was a freshman in high school. That's not the target audience but I LOVED it then and LOVE it now. Along with "Wind Chill," it's my favorite Christmas movie.
Your parents are adorable. I wish they could adopt me, especially considering how supportive they are of your creative endeavors. Kudos to the lot of ya for all the quality!
I just watched the beginning with my students and was shocked at how much I remembered, and also, how well-crafted it was. In just 30 mins of the movie. I agree whole-heartedly with your assessment.

I feel like the production value on your videos have improved astronomically since I first started following you. I can't wait for your future indie film cause I feel like its getting there.
I just started watching your channel today, but I needed to say that I adore your parents. I don't know what their background is but they're surprisingly good actors (particularly your mum) and they're funny as hell.
I love Blank Check. 90's kids movie supreme. If you grew up it with it's your movie. Obviously Home Alone's great, but they're not really that similar.
Good UA-cam analysis - thank god, it's rare these days! My own contribution to the extended hypothetical "Kevin McAllister vs The Universe" timeline of Home Alone sequels - Kevin vs Warhammer 40,000. An entire universe of enhanced fantasy sci-fi where no-one is your friend.
Always fancied the older sister. Perfect Williams score. Magnificent scream. Post Goodfellas watch Joe is even scarier. Apart from It's A Wonderful Life and Blackadder Christmas special, this gets me in the mood the most. And yes Katherine O'hara makes me cry every single time.
I didn't watch Home Alone until I was an adult at the urging of a friend who loves it. I hated it. It made me cry. Everyone is really mean to Kevin, who's like just a kid???? Really did not enjoy the experience. But your video made me have a kind of appreciation for it.
I remember Cinema-wins read into this as almost an adaptation of A Christmas Carol featuring the family as Christmas. Family Past, all the scenes in Act 1, Family Present, everything with Harry and Marv, and Family Future where we meet Old Man Marley (literally, Marley).
"Keep the change..." is a close second, but I'd say "Kevin!" is the first quote I think of, probably because I use it to mess with my wife when I tell her we forgot something on a trip. Speaking of "serious craft", I see the macaroni & cheese continues to be underrated. One day I'll get to eat a plate of food that beautiful. One day.
Just wanted to say thank you for these videos. They always bring a smile to my face. You joy and love of cinema and voices always shines through. And your parents are worth every cent. Because I’m sure you pay them, right?
Kevin - did anyone order me a cheese pizza ? Buzz - yeah but if you want any someone's gonna have to barf it all up because its gone ( buzz chokes ) Kevin - ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Another fantastic video! I had to comment this time and let you know I audibly laughed at all three SkillShare plugs. They were hilariously thrown in and executed. Cheers.
Oh, I get it! Patrick was acting like an elitist jerk because most of the comments in his Last Jedi vid accused him of being an elitist jerk. I love meta-humor!
I'm noticing a lot of layering flubs here. Maybe because Home Alone is so agonizingly close to 16:9, but in a lot of shots, you're still waving your arms just behind the movie clips, and it is so weird. I don't want you to think I'm trying to diss the video because of this, though. This is still a really fun and enjoyable video essay with a damned inventive format! I subscribed a long time ago and I haven't regretted it for a second. Cheers!
Honestly, my go-to Christmas films as a kid were Home Alone 1 & 2 and Michael Keaton's Jack Frost. Let me just say, Home Alone still stands up... but Jack Frost gives me literal nightmares.
Home Alone in Jurassic Park sounds incredible. Kevin's dad's job turns out to be insurance for the park and he is part of the team of auditors from the first JP film. Kevin sneaks into his luggage and ends up on the island. The Wet Bandits are part of a team of thieves helping Nedry and Dodgeson get the dino DNA off the island but things go horribly wrong.
"Kid's Die Hard"
OH MY GOD HE'S RIGHT
This and Die Hard are actually my two favorite Christmas movies, and I never realized this.
BFisch I laughed so hard.. 😂
Well I mean.. it's right, Kevin did think he murdered his entire family with his mind and has some witty remark. So yeah...
And they're both movies that many people regard as Christmas movies, when they really have nothing to do with Christmas other than being set at that time. What I didn't realize until I saw his video on Christmas movies is that the same is true of It's A Wonderful Life!
The Cracked Podcast made this parallel back in 2013.
Love how the Old Man Marley flips the script. Normally he'd be revealed as the wise sage who gives Kevin advice, but it's so refreshing that it's Kevin who dishes out some life wisdom to him. Also, Catherine O'Hara's performance is Oscar-worthy.
I love how hard Joe Pesci tries not to swear in these movies...
Nate and Noah Try Life There’s that old acting trick “Think ‘fuck’ but don’t say it.” Pesci’s performance is a great example of that.
Love how?
The DVD commentary talks about how he really struggled with this so the director tells him to say "refrigerator" as his go-to swear world.
Yeah I heard one of the major problems on set was that they kept having to do extra takes because Joe Pesci couldn't stop accidentally swearing, Legend.
Ikr?!

Same.
“Somewhere In My Memory” is easily one of my favourite Christmas songs. I was surprised John Williams wasn’t mentioned directly.
RIP John Candy. Man I miss that guy.
When I think of Home Alone, I think of the line "KEVIN!" at the end.
*talks about a movie emboldening family values and in which the protagonist learns to treat his parents better to not end up bitter and alone, all the while Patrick himself treats his own parents like a spoiled brat*. Classic. :-D
“Who would win in a fight, Kevin or the Predator?”
“How much prep time does Kevin have?”
Sellout Patrick is hilarious. Wearing a Patrick Willems shirt, plugging the sponsor with a higher production value than the rest of the video, etc.
I know right! Classic.
Did he get any money from Red Bull?
I personally think that Chris Columbus is a genius when he comes to bring homes atmosphere to screen : you called his Harry Potter movies borring, but I can assure you that they perfectly represent my interpretation of Hogwart Castle, old sorcerers, all the sensations I felt reading HP books. "the guy who made Mrs. Doubtfire and the boring Harry Potter movies". I didn't know Columbus made Half-Blood Prince
The Half-Blood Prince is far from boring, just if your attention span is too short. Also is the second best Harry Potter film. ;)

White balance and film aspect ratio showing fun! It’s neat seeing little issues like this from the time to time.
Another great video, Ronan the accuser was remembered most in the dancing outtakes at the end of guardians
Patrick, you have quickly become one of my favorite UA-camrs! And I LOVE your parents!
I love it when you list the good things about Angels with filthy souls with:a 2 d. Awesome detail
That was great, glad to see details on why this movie sticks with me so much!
I would also add that "Setting the Trap" is among my favorite John Williams' cues.
"This is kid's Die Hard". Patrick really is the philosopher-king of our times.
I hate to say it, but he's not the first person to say that.
Mad props for the subtle use of Buzz's "A... 2... & D" joke at 12:04.
Always a pleasure, Mr. Willems.
Home Alone is sweet. Definitely in my top 5 Christmas movies.
Kevin - did anyone order me a cheese pizza ?
Buzz - yeah but if you want any someone's gonna have to barf it all up because its gone
( buzz chokes )
Kevin - ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
I didn't realize you were wearing sunglasses until 15 minutes in
These Patrick Explains videos are perfect morsels. Keep em up folks.
13:30 and that Daniel Stern didn’t scream with the tarantula on his face in the live take. Completely believable.
One of my neighbors house-sat for the real life owners of the Home Alone house and I feel that has deeply influenced my love for that movie.
No joke, my face resembled Kevin when this came up in my subscription feed.
Your parents, as always, are a delight in this.
15:07
I have just heard the most perfect sequence of words imaginable.
"Kevin VS Freddy VS Jason"
I'm noticing a lot of layering flubs here. Maybe because Home Alone is so agonizingly close to 16:9, but in a lot of shots, you're still waving your arms just behind the movie clips, and it is so weird. I don't want you to think I'm trying to diss the video because of this, though. This is still a really fun and enjoyable video essay with a damned inventive format! I subscribed a long time ago and I haven't regretted it for a second. Cheers!
One year too late (where have you been algorithm!?) but LOVED the A, 2, D reference. A++.
Oh come on, everyone knows Kevin grew up to be the Jigsaw Killer.
I love that Patrick has to add that little blooper at the end just to make sure we know that he's not really harassing his parents.
Kevin vs Freddie vs Jason
Tre Casanova Kevin vs Jigsaw
Oh boy!! I really want those sequels!
Honestly, my go-to Christmas films as a kid were Home Alone 1 & 2 and Michael Keaton's Jack Frost. Let me just say, Home Alone still stands up... but Jack Frost gives me literal nightmares.
For me a must watch Christmas movie is actually an episode of Community - Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas.
this is the greatest youtube channel ever.
Ha! You're spot on and your parents are adorable!
