Hi Adam...Costs per hours for a Plumber. $100 if he does it. $150 if you watch. $200 if you help. $250 if you already started. $300 if you fixed it already.
Should take off your wedding ring while working with heavier stuff, Idk of there’s an ig page or not , but I’ve seen some nice pictures of someone’s skin getting peeled over their ring , and you should take it off so the 458 knows you’re not cheating on it
If the valve covers start to leak next year. Look back and remember this is when You could get to them so much easier. So, I vote change them now! 😎 Do a video of cleaning all the stuff your taking off to get to them. And that engine bay, that’s a perfect time to access as much as you can to polish it up too!
Agree: I have "old" cars, but for comparison I have both a '96 (993) and F355, the Porsche is a rock and every interior part (vents, dash, switches, etc.) still looks new. The Ferrari, looks new, because it is! I've had to have the dash, all the switches, vents, etc. redone at $$, and my valve covers have the red paint falling off and looks like crap. (Note: the car still runs and sounds great). That's just the interior, that's not the cheap headers (the previous owner had to replace), again the Porsche has stock SS heat-exchangers still working great. LOL
Do the gaskets. You have fallen victim to the "while you are in there" situation, which can be especially bad on exotics. Do it now and know that it's not going to be a problem for another 40k miles. It's also why the smart play is to only start jobs like this in the winter, when it doesn't matter how long your car is in pieces. Although in ATX that may not make much difference.
It's like remodeling your home. It starts with a leaking drain and turns into new sink then new spigot new counter the "what the hell" new cabinets ahhhhh new tile floor and $35K later the leaky drain is fixed I hope.
VW/BMW/several other DI cars utilize a walnut media blast directly on the intake valves to clean that buildup off (there's a tool made that blocks off each port with two holes, one for a shop-vac hose and the other for the blasting wand to go in). Some manufacturers are going to dual-injection as a way to retain the fuel economy/power of direct injection, and the MUCH lower maintenance of port injection.
Proper way to clean direct injection engines is Walnut shell blast each intake port. A secondary optional method uses cleaner and bundled zip ties on the end of a drill.
You guys are just adding work to this. If you wait for them to fail that could be more content. Maybe invite Josh to show how he does that intake removal when you do the valve covers, since Adam is going to bail on you if you do them again? Adam you're fired. LOL Just kidding I like you a lot. You and Dan are funny together. I feel you about not wanting to do that work again Dan. Since you have the access I would research it. I think Adam was blowing a blood vessel with the stress of doing the intake LOL. Maybe consult Josh on the pitfalls. I say go for it, if you are confident. Remember your new assistant is not going to help you. next time. At least Meg never bailed on you on camera like Adam did LOL. That is funny.
I am shocked. This paint finish has been a signature of Ferrari for many years, and they can't get it right...... They should have that finish down to a fine art by now......
Did you ever have to replace a seal/gasket behind the timing belt cover ? If so, how many hours to take the engine out to a point it could be replaced ?
Hi Dan, Hi Adam, If I may...as you have the air intake manifold off...I would suggest having the pneumatic actuators tested (part number 258761and replaced if needed. Mine were not working anymore and that was the root cause of a.lot of electrical problems such as the AVH Manettino and CST failure as well as the engine not getting enough air sometimes and too much some other times. Got it fixed and my 458 behaves like new...with at least 100HP more. It is easy to test...just take a vacuum pump and see if the actuators (the 2 of them...) are moving easily or not. Maybe a little vid on this one would be great too. Thanks to Roberto and Emmanuel from Roselli in San Jose CA who saved my Bellissima and explained me all of this :)
Carbon buildup like that is common with direct injection motors. You can pour Seafoam or some other type of cleaner into the cylinders with the valves closed and then use picks and brushes to scrape the buildup off. Then you need to vac the crud out. You don't want it going into the combustion chamber. LegitStreetCars has a video.
Damn, that’s all oily carbon build up in the head. Start looking into an Air Oil Separator(AOS) or catch can to no longer have oil recycling back through the intake via PCV
Don't be lazy! Do the valve covers! And since you're in there, you might as well take the heads off and do a valve job to clean the valves properly. And that engine compartment looks kind of dirty too, especially under the carbon fiber covers... Looking forward to the content. 👍
My valve cover gaskets started to weep slightly about a year after I got my 430, I’ve had my 430 for almost 12 years now, it will literally need to be pouring out before I go through that hell of changing them 😂
Is there a way to delete the factory PCV system and put a vented catch can on these things? That would help all your oil build up on the back of the valves
Hi Guys. Think as we say. You in The Salt Already. Most room you have. Change Valve Cover Gaskets. It will probably leak after you put intake back in. Cheers Carlyle
If anyone read this please note that Dan have more hair than what you see. He just pulled them out after he realized how much work he made for himself 🤣🤣
@@normalguysupercar Atleast your Ferrari's engine will look great again. I like your channel it's something different from the other car channels on UA-cam.
I would do both the intake sides and valve covers with the red wrinkle powder coat. You may also want to clean the valves too. Watch this video on how the car wizzard cleaned valves on an audi s6/Lamborghini v10 m.ua-cam.com/video/8zmXyB38mRg/v-deo.html
Damn! I would’ve just used a brush with some touch up paint to cover the flaked off red paint in those small spots, and saved that disassembly nightmare! Prob would not be as good a video though. Lol.
0MG!! I know if I ever have this issue I'm just going to use red touch up paint or a permanent magic marker. Even if I have to do it everyday 😜
Haha no kidding
This looks like a Big job

Do the valve cover gaskets! I can't wait to see the "Puttin' it back together" video! Will it ever run again?
Lol indeed

I'll admit, my butthole clenched up when the clip fell in the intake. Glad you got it out.
If your in there you might as well - imagine the cost of Ferrari techs doing this! Saving a fortune and learning as you go!
Yeah for sure
Well that seemed like a proper ballache of a job! LOL Might aswell go balls deep and do the gaskets.....😂
Lol yes it is
If it's not broken break it... 😂 👍
Lol yes!
Ferrari: makes 250k car can't splurge for the good paint.

Well replace the valve cover gaskets. It is not a fun job but an oil leakage is not fun either. Keep up the good job with the channel 👍😊
Thanks
Might as well do the alternator too since it's right there beneath all of that intake stuff.
Honestly that's not a bad idea

Yeah honestly the summer is almost too hot in Austin and the winter is great for driving trips
I personally would sleep better if I did the valve covers too. Potential buyers are probably watching. It'll be good content too. 👌
The Thomas Crown Affair had fewer plot twists than this videos.

Steve McQueen or Pierce Bronson? Or what I mean is the good original or the crappy remake.

Accurate. Lol
Wow what a video, had me laughing so hard when those hoses kept keeping you from removing the intake one at a time. So relatable
Yup
Permanent magic marker and a cold one seems the best idea.
Lol

Regarding clamps, go to a boat dealer for true stainless steel clamps - grade 300+….

you should do a video on cleaning the carbon deposits in the intake. considering you already have it apart. you know while your in there. lol
Probably going to

yes go ahead and do the valve cover gasket !
