I want to Thank you Stephen.
I was considering becoming a dentist without knowing if it is for me or not.
(I got selected into a lot of dental colleges here in my country)
Through your videos I got an insight into how dentistry would be.
After a lot of contemplation and research I decided not to choose it since I found myself forcing to like it.
It wasn't a natural liking like you have for it. The passion for it, I was lacking it.
I realized after watching you videos that dentistry isn't something you can pursue half-heartedly or with lack of passion.
I might have ended up being disappointed.
You literally saved me from making an immature decision.
    Thank you.
You are a very inspiring person.
I always get motivated to work hard and be as meticulous as you.

Somehow I just found this comment, and I want to thank you for leaving this!! This is honestly the first time I have heard of this outcome! It is hard at times for me to understand the impact I have with my work on UA-cam. Many have told me that I have helped them to become more passionate about dentistry or that I have informed the way they navigate their pre-dental experience. I have never before been told that my content has accurately conveyed the essence of the dental school experience to the point at which a viewer could decide that dentistry was not for them. I respect and love your decision to choose a different path in life. I have some close friends who also chose not to pursue dentistry/medicine and they are already very content with their decisions. Please feel confident in your decision and allow it to drive you to find what IS right for you in your future. I hope that you continue to watch the videos, and I wish you the absolute best of luck in your life's journey! PS: I will be featuring your comment in a dedicated video (without reference to who specifically left the comment of course) because I would love to convey how much this comment impacted me and expand upon my thoughts on this topic.

I hope this video offered you some sense of guidance! Do remember that, no matter what, you will be a dentist in a few short years! The rest of these details are simply considerations that lead us to the ultimate goal!

Hopefully my son doesnt see I commented. I am trying to stay out of his way while he make this important decision of where to go, but as a father you want to give as much guidance as possible, and I dont know dental schools, but I do know debt. Just happened that you were his dental tour guide and a great one at that! (you made a great impression!) and UT is the out of state school he is thinking of, verses our Miss. in state school UMMC (one of the cheapest schools in the nation!) At this point he is balancing the fact of money over the different school's quality of life and testing structure based on what he is hearing from friends at both schools. This video was very helpful. I may give him the book you spoke of. Coincidentally he has almost the exact same name P.Ray!

We should definitely be looking at ways to have dental school paid for. I am a NHSC scholarship recipient at UNLV. As an out state student I’m saving $450k over four years. Education expenses are paid for 100% as well as a $1400 living stipend per month.

Hi can you elaborate a little bit on the scholarship? Do you think it’s worth it so far and what does it entail after dental school? Also was it hard to get accepted? Thanks! (And good luck!)

@@amandafernandez1262 There are UA-cam videos you can learn about it from better than I can describe in this comment b/c its a lot to go over. Simply put, its a 1 to 1 tradeoff so for every year they pay for your school you give them 1 year back in service. Its meant to provide general dentists to areas of high need (typically jails/prisons/community health centers/public health areas etc). Typically all areas are low income/sliding fee scale so lots of extractions/fillings/dentures. Its 100% worth it if you want to be a general dentist or pediatric dentist. The only speciality they allow right after school is pediatric dentistry b/c it's basically general dentistry for kids. They will allow you to do a GPR/AEGD residency as well before starting service if you choose. You get to choose where you go work and I think you do your typical interviews and what not but they have a list of places that the NHSC has deemed in need of dentists. They call them HPSA (health professional shortage areas) hence where they need dentists to serve the community at. It is government funded. Once you give your time commitment back (2,3, or 4 years) then you can go do whatever you please. You can start your own practice, work as an associate, or go back to school and specialize. I should say, it is very competitive similar to the military HPSP scholarships. Approx. 10% of people are accepted but its nice because you can continuously apply every year while you are in school unlike the others. I applied once and got it the first time as a caucasian male . IMO the biggest factor is your essays. The process is pretty straight forward and you have to be accepted into dental school before you can apply. I think the application opens in May each year. I'll have saved approx. half a million and made half a million by the time I give my four years back....do I have to say much else haha. Hope this helps, good luck.
