Brown Trout on Dries : A Blissful Morning Fly Fishing

- What a great morning fly fishing for buttery brown trout on a semi-local small stream. It was great to get a few brown and rainbow trout on a dry fly as well. I always appreciate a good dry fly eat, especially when it involves a brown trout.

Hi Johan, nice bit of micro casting! You certainly picked some very difficult stream to try out casting with a 5/6 rod? The eels are excellent eating, I had to take one out of our farm stream as it all of the ducklings. I hooked it with a pole hook and the eel pulled me in to the water. When I finally got him out he was over six feet long! We had some very good eel meals plus smoked eel in the freezer. These big eels are a treasure (taonga) and really should be protected as it takes them years to grow to that size. Good video, full of good ideas and something to learn from each of your trips. I do like the look of the parking area you got so close to the stream. Reminds me of Paradise Valley. Have a great Christmas. Cheers mate. Harera
I must say I would normally do it with a 7'6 3wt but I don't have one at the moment and don't do enough tight stuff like this to justify getting one. A 9ft 5wt certainly adds to the casting challenge but keeping it all close and short helps. Trees and bushes are unavoidable so just need to be patient. I love the eels, always find the facinating. Good to see there are still plenty in this stream. The parking is even better than paradise valley as it has two toilets. How flash is that and handy for an early morning start.
Great footage Johan, excellent job 👏
Thanks, hope you didn't mind so much 360 footage. I know you aren't a fan of it.
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Love the new camera angle makes stand out from alot of other videos keep it up
Thanks Jon, good to hear you enjoyed the new angle. I'll keep trying it out in different spots this summer. It definitely makes filming a bit easier.
so good to see you have been able to get on to the river Johan, still high and dirty water here. I will be busy first couple of weeks in the New Year, so bet the water comes right then, hahaha. All the best for Christmas and the New Year, hopefully we will catch up in 2023
Thanks Neil, it was very good to ger out and hopefully we are set for a great January and February with Cicadas going mad. I hope to get into the backcountry asap in the new year. I'm sure we will cross paths again next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Hey Johan. Good to actually see fish, the rivers have been dirty & weather unpredictable. Merry Christmas mate hopefully we see more fine days "Tight lines".
Hopefully this week will see them clear a bit. Merry Christmas to you too and tight lines in the new year
What a great day Johan! Good to see you back on freshwater.
Thanks Paul, it's great to be back catching trout. Hopefully I can get backcountry soon enough. Tight lines
Very nice stream with some great fishing. I would have been thrilled to catch those lovely fish. I expect casting and landing fish with all that vegetation must have been challenging. As for the eels, we don't have them in the Rocky Mountain streams I fish. Can you catch them? Are they good for eating?
Yeah the casting is very challenging. I hooked the trees more often than I showed. Roll casting and side casting up and down the stream underneath the trees works best or keeping it very short like I did. Normally I would fish this with a 7'6'' 3wt and a shorter leader but I don't have one at the moment. The longer 5wt makes it a bit harder. The eels can be caught, I hear even on fly and they are eaten as well but I haven't tried it yet. There are two species. Long-fin and Short-fin. Not sure which these are.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing I have a 7'9" foot 2 weight Sage 279LL, which could have worked on that stream. Another rod, which is one of my favorites, is the Winston Boron III LS 8’6" 4 weight. That's just me fantasizing fishing that beautiful piece of water. Seemed you handled casting admirably though. If the stock market ever recovers, I'll consider spending time in NZ to experience fishing there. Thanks for keeping your videos coming.
Lovely little stream that one, had a few good sessions there myself, but haven't walked up to the bush line before, do you know if there's any up that far and if it's worth it? My guess that lower section would be disturbed by swimmers? Cheers mate good content!! 👍
Only the swimming hole is disturbed by swimmers regularly during summer. I always jump in right above that where it becomes overgrown and fish my way up. I used to fish all the way to the bush line where from memory the stream splits in two and becomes too small and steep but from memory I have caught fish just below that. I haven't done that or anywhere near that far up in recent years as I am always pressed for time and rarely fish past midday before I have to head home. Hopefully I will get time to do the entire stretch some time this summer.
Love the video man, you’re commentary of what you are doing and you’re strategy is really nice to help others learn how to think while fly fishing, and the POV from the 360 camera is great!!
Really appreciate the feedback. It's great to know what works. Let me know if there is anything else you would like to see as well.
You're like a walking nature encyclopedia!!!! I really enjoyed this.
Thanks you 😊
Great video brother.
Much appreciated
Kanikaniwha a good stream has plenty fish on a good day
Great little stream indedd
Subscribed! Hello, CAFF! Can you share, what's your rod setup in this video? Would love to know more about which rod you're using here, looks ideal for small streams, something I'd like to venture in more when the weather picks back up here. Particularly interested in length/weight, and brand! Thanks!
Found it, just had to watch a bit further in your video. Primal Bold rod, 9"0 5 WT it looks like. Seems like a solid rod!
Yes that's the one. Really enjoying my two Primal bolds. I have a 5 and a 6wt.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Great to know, thanks! Both would do well where I'm at in Colorado!
Mate, than brownie at about 4 and a half mins was a cracking fish!! "Not a big one". 😅😅😅
I forget sometimes that we are very blessed in NZ with some oversized trout. It is indeed a great fish from a small piece of water like this.
Very clever camera system. I'm actually visiting NZ from Australia with my partner at the moment. This place is magic! You are so blessed to have this in your backyard. Great video!
Enjoy your trip and hope you are doing some fishing too. We are indeed very lucky with the incredible water we have.
Fajna wodaaa!!!! u nas zima trochęę lóddd wyskoczył - jedynie okonie z przerębla⛄ - od stycznia akcja troć🎣 💪😎
To brzmi zimno. Raz próbowałem łowić pod lodem, kiedy mieszkałem w Korei Południowej. To było ciekawe doświadczenie. Mam nadzieję, że czekając na lato, dostaniesz ładnego okonia.
3rd person is cool but those eels are creepy
Haha I love the eels. Makes it interesting in the stream. Glad you like the 3rd person view. A fair bit of that coming up.
