- Ashes Of American Flags performed in the movie Ashes Of American Flags - best version ever
Lyrics
The cash machine is blue and green
For a bundle of twenties and a small service fee
I could spend three dollars and sixty-three cents
On Diet Coca-Cola and unlit cigarettes
I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck
How hot and sorrowful, the machine begs for luck
All my lies are always wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
We want a good life with a nose for things
The fresh wind and bright sky to endure my suffering
I'm a hole without a key if I break my tongue
Oh, speaking of tomorrow, how will it ever come?
All my lies are always wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
I'm down on my hands and knees
Every time I hear a doorbell ring
I shake like a toothache
Every time I hear myself sing
All my lies are only wishes
I know I would die if I could come back new
I would like to salute
The ashes of American flags
And all the fallen leaves
Filling up shopping bags
This is the best video on UA-cam, hand's down. Long live Wilco. Long live Cain's Ballroom.
....and this is just a sound check!?!? dammit I love this band!
This is so perfect it makes my heart hurt...I've seen them 5 times and it seriously borderlines a religious experience...
That's a perfect description, right on target! So many years since I've seen this for the first time yet it always hits me the same. It's just perfect!
Nels’ solo gets more amazing every time I watch it. And I’ve watched this 100 times.
Amen! I've seen them 4 times and it only gets better!
I heard some songs by Wilco about 20 years ago but I didn't grasp it. Now I have done, unbelievable it took that long.
@@gordononkyo2713 better late than ever.. also Wilco is very special live. Til this day. I've probably been to over 200 concerts. All different artists.. legendary musicians and all.. but Wilco will always be my favorite live concert ever.
There's no words really. Americana at it's best.
Makes me even wanna move there.
Nels Cline is the "Guitar God"
Nels just casually melting time
Whether it's this version or the one from "Kicking Television Live," Nels' solos on this song give me chills, and probably more so than on any other Wilco song. So amazingly beautiful and tasteful. Makes me feel like I could fly.
Got to agree with you there. I was in love with the version on 'KT', but this one is equally astounding.
NorthWriter his solo in this song is just magnificent, it gives me goosebumps every time, he adds so much to the song..
There really is no best version of a Nels performance. Each one stands out on its own
How is it that I’ve listened to this version 1,000,000 times…?
Nels just transports me.
I love changing up the ending. It's almost as if this was the 'alternate ending' all along, switching the ambient, ambiguous, atonal noises from the studio version with the resolution of nels Cline and glenn kotche playing their hearts out.
This version is some mystical shit... pure magic
The perfection, in a soundcheck…
Absolute best version. 3:35 is my favorite part. Wish it was longer.
Oh, man, I sooooo know what you mean. Like, I could dig a whole song of just that.
Chills every time. This is a masterpiece
Those rich piano chords are what do it for me.
I thought it would be more or less like the album version but this is almost a new song, gentle and without the frightening sounds of the original. Beautiful.
I’ll roll my windows down and listen to this song, when it’s really really cold- then when the solo begins I’ll roll up the windows and feel the blood of the country in my veins- this song, this solo, it’s like gospel, it’s feels as good as it sounds
fantastic!
beautiful song, beautiful guitar solo
It does not get much better than this...
Those houses in the beginning at 1:28 are on 57 south by my town I drive by them all the time
awesome lead by Nels...
Perfect version, makes me cry every time I listen to it!
Beautiful song. The end of this one is sublime.
Jeff looks really good
How has this not had a comment in FIVE YEARS? Wow. How prophetic are these opening titles?
I, for one, am lost for words.
Superb group, superb song, superb version.
Perfection.
recorded in my home town...... at the Cain's in Tulsa town baby!!!!
That's just how good Wilco are
So inspiring and beautiful
by far the best version of this song
Nels Cline is unreal
I would like to salute...the ashes of American flags.
nels cline is fiiiiiine
get paid son, you shred so good
Great song! Greetings from Poland
Absolutely ridiculous! The version on Kicking Television is excellent as well, check it out!
So gorgeous.
As of right now, there are 19 dislikes on this video. You can all bet they left here and immediately went over to the Bieber Channel.
A hundred in 20`s
fucking beautiful song makes me crying
Hello Mr Palazzo: Thank you very much for uploading this song. Totally agree with you when you say "the best version ever". It's a good song (studio version) but this version is almost another song. Superb!
Only 1 Word:

épica,...insuperable !!
Better than the Kicking Television version...which is incredible! Amazing song, amazing band. Good music still exists this day in age.
I don't love Nels Cline, sometimes his style annoys me, but I've always loved this version of this song, and this particular solo of his is awesome.
Maaaasssa demais!!!
Love the alternative country vibe ❤happy Fourth USA
I wish this and the version of Wishful Thinking were available as studio tracks
"lies are always wishes"
Can’t fucking believe Brendan canty directed this
I would like to salute
Epic :)
The ending of this song sounds exactly like Jesus taking a perfectly climate-controlled shower on the island of Tortuga, while eating slices of perfectly toasted and evenly preserved sourdough toast...while mentally visiting the Omaha Zoo in Nebraska.
WINS MY INTERNET TODAY! GRACIAS
Henry Doorly himself could not disagree.
Sounds Stella Blue during the outro
I know I would die if I could come back new.

@mikemohr so lucky!
Great stuff. And post- election, I am sorely feeling some of this sentiment. Thanks.
Clint, why weren't we at this show?! Cain's Ballroom man
The solo is of course just is verbal, it is just a vibration above a whisper, and I get as others have felt, emotional… so many images in my head, but I find that the bass is like the perfect echo, a valve of the heart to the solo …just a terrific moment and experience for the listener.
I was in a war, and it’s as Regan would agree nothing to brag about , but its something that we have to grapple with..but when you are on one of the flights home from overseas, or riding in the back of a bus and you see our country through the eyes of the various people that you see or think about.. you wonder, if some people even knew what it takes…it’s two words… spoken together…should give you goosebumps…American Flag.
Is there an HD version of this??
great! do you know where could i see the whole documentary?
thanks!
