I will tell anybody that will listen how to enjoy life. Four years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and told that I had very little chance but I went on Chemotherapy which unfortunately killed the nerves in my feet so now I can no longer walk or drive but I can say that there is not a happier person on this planet. I read my newspaper, I read my book, I talk to friends on the phone and I enjoy my family. Everyone should be told that they have cancer and live believe me you need nothing else, life is sweet.

You can't have pleasure in life without skill.
There is immense pleasure to learn a skill with discipline.
Inspiration, then technique to express it.
We are fish in water. We don't know we are there!
    Thanks Alan. 7 August 2023.💖😇🤠🍒🌟🎖🦓🦓

WOW I never knew someone with the same surname with such an incredible insight existed. He’s absolutely right about money doesn’t buy pleasure. I’ve been learning everything I possibly can about renovating houses and its been challenging and down right frustrating at times but I kept on persevering and the immense joy you feel when you have learnt a skill for me anyway is more valuable than money. In the end, I've come to realize that true satisfaction in life often comes from the pursuit of knowledge, the mastery of skills, and the intrinsic joy they bring. While money can provide options and comfort, it's the personal growth and sense of achievement that truly enrich our lives. So, I'll continue to persevere in my journey of learning and renovating houses, knowing that the invaluable reward of self-improvement outweighs any monetary gain.

Stock or options traders who have reached a certain level of skill and don't need the money anymore still enjoy doing it because to them it's just as enjoyable as playing the guitar is for somebody who has reached a certain level of skill with that for example. So while money in and of itself may not buy happiness, sometimes being able to skillfully manipulate it for a desired result.. like you can skillfully manipulate the strings on a guitar or skillfully manipulate and move your body during yoga for example, that type of thing can still bring to such people pleasure even if it's taking place in the financial realm

His ability to share so much of his perspective in just 5:44 is a remarkable gift to those of us who are open to entertain & possibly integrate insights from others. He whittled down his whole life of searching into Cliff Note simplicity & offered it to everyone. Would loved to have shared space & time for awhile with him, his influence raises-the-bar 👍🌈☀

Personally I very much like the eye metaphor. It has to be transparent. There has to be "nothing" there so that you can see.
Alan : " The lens of your eye, you call that transparent, no colour - see? Because you can't it see(!), but it's basic for being able to see anything."
Just take it metaphorically and drift along with this sentence and think about the veil non-transparent thought's, which incessantly try to label all tinx and events. And by that prevent you from seeing and being WITH what is there in the factual nOw.

_"... Doesn't mean his teachings are worth nothing, you only learn from perfect examples do you ..."_
      Yeah.
My point is that there are no teachings,
      at all.
      Humans know nothing
      about the essence and quality
      of their existence.
      We just don't know.
This life is joy and pain.
      Happiness and sorrow.
      (If you asked me personally
it's a bit more on the
      pain and sorrow side than
      it should be.)
      That's what humans know,
      and nothing else.
      There are no answers
      only the questions.
      The same way
how Alan Watts is a teacher
      you could be a teacher
      or I could be.
      But I'm more clever
      than Alan Watts
      'cause I know
      that
      I am not.

      Yeah.
      I reached a depth, too.
      Still it's nothing worthy
      to talk about.
_"... while putting it in such easy and simple words for people like you to elaborate theories like that these days ..."_
      Yeah.
      Talking about nothing.
      Pretty easy to find
      words for it.
      He could just stop to
      speak.
      That could have been
      the same.
      _"... Oh man…. I feel sorry for you ..."_
      Yeah.
      Don't bother with it.
I feel sorry for myself just enough.
_"... he said multiple times he has nothing to sell or teach ..."_
      Yeah.
And he said that at their speeches.
Why did he not say that in an empty room
      while he was alone.
_"... Again people like you went and paid to hear him ..."_
      Yeah.
      It's my fault.
_"... you’re not worth the effort, honestly ..."_
      Yeah.
      I can
      agree.

    • @elyzius7725
      @elyzius7725 10 місяців тому +10

Yes, he was. I heard he tried to quit drinking several times but couldn't.
Alan Watts was a trailblazing philosopher who took Christian teachings, Buddhist thought, and even personal experience with psychedelics to present a cohesive fusion of ideas that were bold during his time. He had the gift of gab, able to explain philosophy in an entertaining way, which accounts for his popularity. I don't know when or why he turned to the bottle. Maybe he felt that alcohol helped his ideas flow out faster, or maybe he was harboring some deep emotional pain that never healed. I can only guess at the causes.
If Alan Watts could see how his talks continue to entertain audiences in this day and age, the old rascal would probably grin from ear to ear. He was what Mel Brooks would call a "standup philosopher." I reckon he would have been satisfied if any of his speeches stimulate your brain, but if any of his ideas actually helps you in life, then you benefit as well.
