    Thumbs up! I used your tips building my cart. Here are my additional tips: (1) Replace all bolts with stainless steel hex cap bolts. You'll want to do this if you do nothing else. (2) Put hardboard in the top and bottom trays and in the drawer with liner on top. This helps prevent anything from denting the sheet metal. Relieve the hardboard where the bolt heads are. (3) Use fender washers for the four bolts holding the carcass to the top tray. (4) Dremel off the drawer detents in the sliders and use magnets from HF magnetic strips to provide smoother drawer opening/closing without the 'snap' that the detents make. I put magnets two-deep on the inside back of the carcass. (5) Rivet in Home Depot 16" square steel pegboard panels inside the legs on each end. (6) I found I needed some ballast in the bottom tray to keep the cart from tipping over when the drawer is loaded and fully extended. 18" of train track works perfect.

    Thank you so much for posting this video! I got stuck at the drawer - never would have figured out how to get it out on my own - can't believe it was so simple! OH...also didn't realize the black foam mats were not protective packaging but were liners for the inside of the cart. I had rolled them up thinking - _"hmmm...I like these. I'm gonna keep 'em to use for something else later..."_ You're a *LIFESAVER!!* 👍

    Thank you for the video! Not a lot of them on the single drawer carts. Any chance you can throw a tape measure on that for me? Floor to top of handle. I’d really appreciate it. I have to figure out if I can store it under my workbench when not in use

    • @DaleLucid

      I built it for my daughter. I do remember mentioning that it felt short to me. Harbor Freight has a display model and bonus, they have tape measures in the store that you can use temporarily to measure. The specs say 35".

    I just returned this cart when I tightened the caster bolts, the bolt heads snap off, 3 of the first 4 square bolts I put in, never seen that in my 35 years of being a master technician. yeah its a cheap price, but I don't want to deal with stuff that breaks right off the bat.

      I would’ve prepped/sanded the carriage bolt heads and installed them when you painted the inside trays for full coverage including the carriage bolt heads. Since you ran out of paint and will need to apply more , then you can still get the same results in the end.

  • @cblankenship3018

    Great tip on the starter bolts for the wheels. Yelled at my wife while she held the really stubborn carriage bolts with some pliers. Almost caused a divorce and I put a few small scratches in the paint on my five drawer assembly...the scratches were the worst part. The wife also hated that I was working on this during the COVID New Year’s Eve “celebration.” After that nightmare, the rest of the assembly was easy.

  • @vaughnwesterby5162

    Dave, if you wanted to upgrade to a heavier caster would that be possible. Do you know if the bolt pattern would match to another at HV? Also is the frame gage of the steel the same as the 5 drawer cart. Thanks for the video

    • @DaleLucid
      @DaleLucid  3 роки тому +1

      It seems that the weight ratings on most tool carts is based on the limit of the caster and/or the drawer glides. I think the steel in both the panels and frame is adequate overall. The casters like other US General storage is not the weak point here. This cart is not equivalent to the 5 drawer in any way. I feel like the weak link is the fasteners. That all being said there probably is an upgrade at HF. To see if it will fit just take the caster over to the stores display cart and set it in the bottom tray to see if the casters mounting holes align with the bolt heads for the current caster.
      I hope that helps. I would add that this little cart is absolutely perfect for the project that I got it for.

    I’ve been trying to put by cart together by hand. The nylon nuts will not screw on? Am I missing something.

    • @DaleLucid
      @DaleLucid  3 роки тому

      Not at all Evan. The Ny-loc nuts are hard to put on because they do not loosen and back out. No need then for a lick washer.
      I will say that the hardware on the 4 and 5 drawer U.S. General carts is much better.
      Just make sure that you are not cross threading the nut.

    Will the casters at harbor freight fit this i wanna upgrade mine if so do you knkw the size of the bolt holes?

    • @DaleLucid
      @DaleLucid  5 місяців тому

      You can go to harbor freight and grab a caster from the bins and take it to the display model of the single drawer cart. If the bottom tray has a liner lift it to expose the caster mounting bolt heads. Place your chosen caster mounting plate on top of the exposed bolt heads to see if they line up. You may have to get a reamer bit to enlarge the holes. HF's 4" caster selection doesn't include a locking caster. My recommendation is to look for a 5" caster that you like.
      Maybe make a video of your modification for UA-cam.

    I recently purchased this same cart... yesterday in fact. When I got it home the drawer was broken off the drawer slide on the right.
    One thing everyone should probably do to this cart when they assemble it is to replace the rivets holding the drawer slides to the cabinet and to the drawer. I just drilled them out with an 1/8" bit and they literally basically fall out. Replacing the drawers rivets are easy as 1/2/3. The cabinet side is tighter space. I super glued my nuts to the underside of the cabinet bracket and used a bolt to hold it in place until the glue set. This way all you need to do is line the slide up on the cabinet and get it started. Then using an open end or box end wrench under to tighten. I didn't find it possible to get my fingers, small nut and wrench in the hole so above makes that easy.
    The rivets that hold the drawer on are extremely cheap, not well installed and any minor impact can pull the rivets out and in my case my was broken in the box.
    Replace the rivets in the drawer and cabinet with #8-32 1/2" screws and nuts. I also used nylon locking nuts as well as locktite on the threads.
    If you don't replace those rivets I can almost 100% guarantee that drawer is going to break off the rails.
    Hope this helps.
