Wild Boar is delicious. Had some once at a little restaurant specialising in Wild Boar close to the border in the mountains between France & Spain. Have not been able to get any since. I expected, in the restaurant, to be offered a meal including wild boar. I expected to see a menu offering a choice of wild boar based meals. It turned out to be not the case. They simply brought to the table a big platter heaped with chunks of wild boar, including a thick gravy coating. Which we shared between our party. There were no vegetables on offer. The nearest I can get to describing the taste is a beefy sort of pork. I found it a robust flavour but very deep, satisfying & delicious. I think the fact it was served with an excellent gravy probably helped things go down well. As it is quite a strong flavour I can appreciate not everyone is going to like it. The wild boar I had definitely tasted like it was wild meat but I liked that.
Wild boar tastes like a cross between pork and beef, with a unique juicy succulence. The meat is a bit darker, perhaps due to the healthy iron content. With a rich and nutty flavour wild boar offers something unique.
I must admit I do like cooking my own burgers, instead of going into McDonald's. At least you can see what goes in, but those looks alright and tasty. 😋
that's what made me laugh after the lock down when McDonald's reopened and people were spending up to 2 hours queuing to get into one - they could of gone and bought the ingredients and cooked it in less a time and had a far better burger than that rubbish McDonald's push out!
Lots of people have bought the theory that grilling is better than frying - for decades, everything was fried in lard or dripping - then cooking oil came along - then someone said that under the grill is the way to go - except that the fat and grease drips into the grill pan, resulting in it coming out all dry and tasteless! You can’t grill sausages - two of the sides are still raw - so you end up turning them four times! As for cooking from frozen, you either have to cremate the outside for them to be fully cooked or cook it lightly, but have a mini-iceberg in the middle - if, like my late mam, you like your meat lightly fried - no longer pink, but not brown, you have issues! It seems that air fryers have solved the problem - you can cook it right through with no burnt bits or icebergs!
It tastes of very strong pork and if you're not accustomed to the flavour they can be very off putting. They go well as pies but boar always does best mixed with other meats as in game pie or boar sausage. We used to breed Iron Age Pigs which are a straight cross between Wild Boar and usually a Saddleback Pig (or was it Tamworth?) and were bred to recreate the original domesticated pig bred by ancient man from Wild Boar. We never ate them, it's hard to eat anything you know by name, but we supplied them to various farm parks and living history museums as exhibits... the piglets are charming little things usually with bumble bee stripes. If any of the ones we supplied were ever eaten (or their offspring) I don't know but no one came back to say what they tasted like.

I think the word to use is a "gamey" taste, which would describe many wild caught animals such as Elk. One could add a higher pork portion, garlic, sage, thyme, rosemary, pepper and a bit of sugar to cut that strong flavor.

I remember when my parents took my sister and me to a fancy country restaurant where I had pheasant for the first time. I didn't like it. It had a strong gamey flavour. I think it's the same for most game, including wild boar. I ate pheasant a couple of times more at people's houses, but the gamey taste was still present. I think certainly pheasant is highly overrated. But I've eaten hog roast sausage rolls before, at a farmer's market and they were delicious. Anyway, these particular burgers are too expensive to try. May have been different if Gareth had been much more enthusiastic about the taste, but it is what it is. Strange that wild caught trout doesn't have an off flavour at all. Just fantastic fish, pan fried for 3 or 4 minutes.

It depends on what they eat in the wild, and what time of the year the meat is taken. If they eat a lot of garbage, it shows up in the flavor of the meat.

It may be that the flavour is what they gamy . Got the following from a search he expression "gamy" describes meat that tastes or smells different, perhaps stronger, than the bland, familiar tastes. "Gamy" is often extended to mutton (sheep) or lamb, goat, camel, and animals such as mountain sheep, moose or bear, that people do not ordinarily eat.

When you read the instructions, Gaz, it sounded like "put burgers in Iraq". I thought, that's a helluva schlep for a burger, and pork wouldn't go down to well in that neck of the woods🤔🙀
Think it's one of those burger meats that needs all the trimmings of onions, cheese and maybe some bacon to make the taste profile more palatable. I had some wild boar and apple sausages the other day and they left me confused with their taste, I'm still not sure whether I liked them.
The taste you didn't like was probably the 'gamey' flavour that most wild animals tend to have. Meats like Venison & Pheasant are similarly gamey & it's a taste that some people really enjoy..even going to the trouble .of hanging their dead critters for a few days, just to get the meat to ferment a bit. Cured Wild Boar bacon can be good..but make sure you buy it from a reputable source & that it's sliced thinly, so as you don't get any thick 'niffy flesh' to have to chew througn. Not much fat gets to collect on a wild boar & of course you know the old adage...fat means flavour! The meat found on the famous domesticated black Iberian pigs that the Spanish farm in Extramadura, are always fed with high-quality swill & fed on a diet of acorns which gives the sausages & hams from these beasts , a rather nutty & sweet flavour. Cheers.
Surprised, but you are correct its all down to opinion. It's a gamey flavour which can be a bit offally for some, but you seem to like offal so was surprised.
I don't like boar. I do love venison. I do like pheasant and duck. I don't do rabbit. I like goose, wood pigeon is a hit or a miss..... As you have said before... You are a braver man than me. Boar might improve with apple or sage a, good fruit chutney etc. But like all game it's an acquired taste. My husband doesn't like any game... He was a beef farmer, will only eat beef or pork. Hates lamb. Will eat chicken (white meat only) not turkey..... I can just see his face if I gave him boar.....
Gareth perhaps the wild boar in these wasn't exactly top quality. I had wild boar in a hotel in northern Italy many years ago and my wife and I still talk about how beautiful it tasted. It was a bit darker in colour to pork and a had more flavour. Anyway your review was very interesting and thanks for it.
Hello Gareth mate, have to say i'm surprised you didn't get to eat boar, when you were stationed in Germany😮? Great ones for the strong flavour, and boar 🐗 sausages go down well.Have to confess, not one i'd have for my last meal 😢 Rather than ketchup or mustards, fruity pickles or relish might be a better option And the cost,a bit on the high side😢 Again you bring me (us) a great video, giving a valuable honest review. Which we appreciate 😊 Next one, soonish pal Allan&Family ❤😊
We have a massive wild boar export industry from Australia to Germany. The Germans have over killed their own wild boars. They love the full on gamey flavor in sausages. Australians don't sell it domestically. 🐷🐷🐷
Ostrich burgers are a lot better try to get some of those from your local market as Ostrich to me tastes similar to beef but better , so expensive though £10 for 2 burgers
Game has an acquired taste. When you say "you either like it or you don't", it's not really true, but I can understand your feelings. Me? After initial revulsion I pressed on and now when I'm in my "Quest for Fire" mode, only this will suffice!
have you seen pictures of wild boar on google images, I wouldn't like to eat those burgers, of course it has to be well seasoned to mask the gamey flavor, perfect dog food

Had them before and I agree they’re very overwhelming but you know something exotic why not
Yes got to try these things mate.
@@BaldFoodieGuyagreed and that’s why your channel is the Uk no1 food review channel cuz your honest and you try everything wether it’s overwhelming dry expensive cheap so keep it up Gaz
When you read the instructions, Gaz, it sounded like "put burgers in Iraq". I thought, that's a helluva schlep for a burger, and pork wouldn't go down to well in that neck of the woods🤔🙀
I made my mind up as soon as you said the price.
Pretty sure the Kenzie ones from Iceland never had another meat to blend and they were very tasty
Aldi sell Ostrich steaks by the same company. Nice marinade and good taste.
Oooih burgers yum. Hey bro hope your good
All good, you too pal
Cheers.
Cheers yes you're right
Get yourself some venison , thats the king of the game meats. Used to go stalking as a kid the smell of the deer bleeding out still makes me hungry
I can just see his face if I gave him boar.....
cheers Liz
Gareth perhaps the wild boar in these wasn't exactly top quality. I had wild boar in a hotel in northern Italy many years ago and my wife and I still talk about how beautiful it tasted. It was a bit darker in colour to pork and a had more flavour. Anyway your review was very interesting and thanks for it.
Yes good point. Strong taste not for me.
Yes never had it in Germany mate. All the best pal 👍
Do you not season your burgers ?
No mate
So if it's not beef it's technically not a burger but a "frikandellen sandwich" instead... 😉
Worth trying
We have a massive wild boar export industry from Australia to Germany. The Germans have over killed their own wild boars. They love the full on gamey flavor in sausages. Australians don't sell it domestically. 🐷🐷🐷
Love a bit of pig me,when it says grill i find that the oven works just as well but shrinkage is a pain (thats what she said) lol
😅😅😅😅😅
I do like boar and venison, but two quid for a quarter pounder seems a bit steep.
Should have a look for the Nando’s equivalent called roosters in Aldi Gareth, apparently very good and very reasonably priced 👍🏻
good one pal, cheers
Ostrich burgers are a lot better try to get some of those from your local market as Ostrich to me tastes similar to beef but better , so expensive though £10 for 2 burgers
Game has an acquired taste. When you say "you either like it or you don't", it's not really true, but I can understand your feelings. Me? After initial revulsion I pressed on and now when I'm in my "Quest for Fire" mode, only this will suffice!
have you seen pictures of wild boar on google images, I wouldn't like to eat those burgers, of course it has to be well seasoned to mask the gamey flavor, perfect dog food
I've had wild bore sausages, wild deer sausages and rabbits they all have a real distinctive taste I personally like it but can understand why people don't,I personally like game meat more than the British so called wagyu meat it just doesn't sit on my stomach right and makes me fell sick.
They looked good. I don't mind game meats but I know a lot don't because of the strong taste. I'd give them a try, but not at that price 😂 I'll stick to my homemade burgers
Good idea
Wild boar has a stronger flavour than pork, and is a bit game tasting. I personally like it especially wild boar sausages. I personally like the flavour of game, partridge, pheasant rabbit, squirrel etc. Admittedly I'm a country lad , and eat quite a lot of game.
all game meat is nice got a stronger flavour if ya get chance try camel i had it in Egypt it was tasty. Only thing I've never liked was crock burgers when Iceland did them along with the ostrich and kangaroo burgers.
Something different Gareth. Might give these a go in the air fryer👍
Cheers Ian, go for it pal.
