1. US Army has reasoning. Methodic and liberal way of thinking. Systematic error detecting. Institutions. Professionalism. Etc. Gays and lesbians aren't a drawback in the US. Instead they are an advantage. Actually many homosexuals are openly accepted in the military.
In Russia and China yes, it's possible that homosexuals in the army might be a problem regarding the troops' unity, cause there are discriminations against homosexuals there.
It depends a lot by the cultural context.
2. There is no way the US and China ever engaged in a war. Maybe in a proxy war (eg in Taiwan). So you are safe either way.

When I was a senior in high school I wanted to join the military and be a NAVY Seal, kind of like what you see on the Russian ad. If I saw todays ad, I surely would never have wanted to join.
