Before you ask: The little dip you see in the frequency-response curves on the oscilloscope seems to be a resonance-effect from the used 100µH inductor in the prototype. You can see it vanish at the end of the video when I manually change the L and C values in the bandstop-filter.
Why is half the level sometimes -3dB and sometimes -6dB ?
When it is about LEVEL, only -6 dB is correct. That´s because half the level is a quarter of the power and a quarter of the power is -6 dB. Remember that dB always relates to relative power (wattage) ratios. Power is proportional to the square of voltage or current: P = Ü^2/R or P=I^2*R
That´s why (due to the logarithmic definition of dB) there is a factor of 2 between talking about power and talking about level (voltage) or current concerning dB-values-
No MATH TRACE (log) feature on that Rigol?
It does of course have the log(10) function in the math-menu. But for some reason I couldn´t make it work for this measurement.
And I didn´t have my analog dB-converter build exactly for that purpose at hand here in the lab.
