(This may be a reminder for most people of God's words from Genesis: "Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness." Suppose God is saying that "let us" make man in "our " picture, then "ours" shows two or more; since He said "ours," then God is not only one. In this way, man begins to think generally of different persons, and from these words came the idea of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is CALLED by different NAMES in the CHANGING TIMES, but this DOESN'T PROVE that each NAME REFERES to a different PERSON. Therefore, then wouldn't there be countless persons of God? What is WRITTEN in the OLD TESTAMENT is the WORK of JEHOVAH, A PHASE of the WORK of GOD HIMSELF for the START of the Age of Law. At first I thought maybe the part about going at them with the edge of the sword referred to use of the Word, like how Jesus has a sword from his mouth that is the Word of God, and perhaps the word slaughtered was added as a negative term for Elijah taking it literally, but this explanation sounds good too. I think I’m inclined to look for other meanings behind the death-punishments mentioned in the Old Testament, since Jesus and the Commandments say thou shalt not murder which seems contradictory to the other parts promoting violence. Idk, I’m still learning
Thou shalt not murder means with hate and desire to harm killing means to just shut down not with desire they killed bc these men were leading ppl to kill themselves and sacrifice people it was a justice reason not desire to kill
Amen! This is a dichotomous universe. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. And when Christ reminded his disciples that Elijah had indeed come as prophecy had told, and that they had done to him whatever they wished, we have to wonder if the beheading of John the Baptist wasn't merely Elijah's karma catching up with him.

I think worship today is different than worship in those contexts. Worship of this idol Baal were atrocious in violence and oppression to those who serve that cult. It's not just "who do you believe is real" that determines death in this context, it's a whole list of evil these priests were perpetuating against these worshipers that they are being executed. The priests were executed, not the former worshipers of Baal. I sincerely appreciate the point Chris made that the fire fell on the sacrifice, not the people!! Jesus takes our place and also gives us freedom from the things and systems that oppress and seek our destruction!

Moses and Elijah both didn't finish their commission- they were so overwhelmed and then asked God to kill them. Moses died but God hid the body of Moses from he who had the power of death and hell- Satan! Elijah was taken up into heaven in a whirlwind. It is appointed to man, once to die and then judgment!
Elijah killed 850 prophets of Baal and Asherah single handedly, probably cutting off their heads, so he paid the same way, losing his head the same way.
They were restored by grace: Moses finally stepped on the promised land, and Elijah got back his complete body!
They both came to encourage Jesus Christ not to give up, when He was finally faced with the event which will usher him into the beginning of his suffering. The trap of the naked young man, Mark 14, set up by the chief priests, scribes and the elders, to tarnish His image as the Son of God, and the Son of David- the King of Israel, which hindered their own agenda.
The event on the mount of Transfiguration, completed the works of "The Law, and the Prophets", and confirmation of Jesus Alone as the ONLY Begotten Son of God, sent to ransom and redeem and restore man back to fellowship with God the Father, in Himself.
There's no other name by which man might be saved, but the name of Jesus Christ. He alone has the Father sealed! Acts 4:12; John 6:27b.
The reason Moses and Elijah met with Jesus Christ was because the fate of the whole creation was resting on Him.
Matthew 21, God had sent Moses, Elijah but Jesus Christ His Son, was man's last hope.
If He didn't finish the commission, then man is eternally doomed!

He actually nearly rejected it when the weight of what He had to go through to get to be crucified actually dawned on Him, He asked the Father if there's a way the "cup" could pass over Him. But, as it is written, He, as the Son of God, bowed to the will of the Father, HE obeyed even till the death on the cross! Hebrews 5:8-14!

And Jesus said “John the Baptist was the incarnation of Elijah.. yet no one recognized him.. “ John died the same way Elijah had put others to death. So would this have been John’s (Karmic debt) what we do to others we suffer in return? “Do unto others” amazingly Edgar Cayce mentioned Baal and the followers of Ba al as Atlantean’s.. “there were the children of the law of one and those who followed Baal.. Baal became selfish a greedy, wanted war an to conquer the world so he and his followers could be treated like Gods. The war between the two groups caused the final destruction of Atlantis.” Love how so many things start to connect!!
Why is the bible so horribly bloody?
Because it records things people did, and, especially back then, people are violent and life on earth is not long lived. But an important thing to understand is that life on earth is not where it ends, God is just, and he has all of eternity to right the wrongs that are happening now.

This pisses me off. In my opinion, evil is our destructive and self destructive values. Free will is fundamental to our nature. We are responsible for who we are, what we do, and why we do it. Our will is not God's will, God's will is not our will. We do not speak for God, we speak only for ourselves. Our word is not God's word, God's word is not our word. There is no word in any book that was not written by the hand and mind of man. Our holy books may be repositories of human experience, human interpretation, human wisdom. To believe that our will is the will of God? That is very close, in my opinion, to believing that we are God. In my opinion, this is often too close to what religion is about. To individually, collectively, and reasonably, believe that our will is the will of God? As our pretext, our evidence for this, we (humanity) refer to a book, that we (humanity) wrote.
