I purchased a Chair Zero. Thought it was the answer to my camp comfort but found out I was wrong. It sinks in the Florida soil. The ground sheet for it is nice but does not help that much. The seat height stinks to put it politely. All the time I had been using the best thing ( for Me ) all along , my hammock. I like it because the hammock is at normal chair height all the time. My grandson is enjoying the chair , he's 10.

I prefer the REI flex lite air chair. $30 less. Weights only 1lb. Has slightly better support for leaning back. Only thing I like better about the helinox is that you can stretch your legs out in front of you a little bit better.

I'm pretty sure the Hilltop Packs stuffsack for the chair isn't actually waterproof in either the DTRS75 Ecopak or Dyneema versions; they are "weather resistant". HP says bag isn't taped. Also, I don't think the leg orientation is actually what is patented, considering you only have to look at Big Agnes, GCI Outdoor, ALPS Mountaineering, Nemo, etc all have the same leg orientation. Pretty sure the patent has more to do with the hub system.

My chair broke within 1 year. The hole by the right leg, where you also have trouble finding the word for, was pierced by one of the legs you put in there. The hole simply wore out within that year. I use the chair every week. I got a replacement cloth due to warranty, but i was lucky since it only has one year warranty. Customer service was ok, but i don’t think that something like this should happen after 1 year for that price.

It seems that weekend hikers typically aren’t as ultralight focused as thru hikers, nor are they gone for weeks at a time, so having a helinox chair or Nemo moonlite is a no brainer. Remember the days when thru hikers used to carry 50 pound packs? What a privilege to debate over ounces!

    • @EpwnaExeter

Exactly! Anything more than 10-15 miles a day or longer than a three day trip I would NOT take a chair. For short easy trips where weight isn't a concern you bet I would love to bring along a comfortable spot to chill at camp.

Not a thru hiker. Weekend and up to 3 nights so far. I buy light stuff so I can bring luxuries. If I ever attempt a multi hundred mile trip, I will re evaluate my weight and luxury choices. Bringing a couple beers on an overnighter is no problem, only have to carry the cans back tomorrow. carrying a few beers on a through hike every day is ridiculous.

When in sand or soft dirt I try to put the chair over a small log so it doesn’t sink in. The ground sheet seems to defeat the purpose of getting such a light chair. You say the pack size is a downside but are there other chairs that pack smaller? Or is that just in comparison to not bringing it? Very worth it if you're older. I'm not a weakling that weighs my gear so I am unconcerned about how many grams it weighs. I also use the Helinox groundsheet with it, and it solves the sinking & wind sail issues (put a rock on the groundsheet). I also keep mine in a dyneema sack from Hilltop. It rides low which is great for relaxing, but not so great for getting up and down as you mention. I also carry a stool which sits several inches up higher and is great for when I'm cooking or doing chores/ being more active at camp, and also doubles as a table when I'm sitting in the chair zero. These keep your backside off the snow in the winter too, invaluable.
